Here’s a recording from the Orca workshop held on October 25th.
We will release it in 3 parts.

@neauoire Thank you for sharing this!

I’ve noticed that the newest Orca push is having some strange behavior on both of my windows computers. That video of mine you shared no longer works: “Orca Live Coding: A Pleasant Alarm.” It just freezes mid frame from the start. Also, I no longer get a list of midi devices but rather have to push through the list using the hotkey.

Under UDP I no longer have the “self” option.

When I choose a UDP device it creates a text entry box at the bottom implying that I need to enter a name of a device? I just want to trigger itself so that I can sequence images again.

Loving the mouse highlight, and the new look! Also love the web version, I tried it on my Pixel 4XL but it was very slow, however, very fast on my computer.

Thank you!

I think that might be because of the graphic command, when you were playing video, was it jpgs or actual video files?

Also, I no longer get a list of midi devices but rather have to push through the list using the hotkey.

It’ll stay like that until I find find a better solution, updating the menu from a list of changing midi devices chrashes on linux, so I no longer modify the menu at runtime.

Under UDP I no longer have the “self” option.

You were using UDP(;) to control orca? Use the $ command instead, it’s a lot faster, it just sends it directly to the terminal instead of the doing a network query.

Thanks for the head’s up, I’ll try and fix the graphics command today.

@neauoire I haven’t played with Orca in a while, but now I’m enthusiastic about it again. It’s really great!
Apart from the fact that the graphics command doesn’t seem to be working right now, I’m wondering how I can insert pictures/vids in the background.
In the past it worked with ;g:(img-name). And now?

And one other question: Is there really no cut, copy & paste option anymore?

In the past it worked with ;g: (img-name) . And now?

It will remain the same, but you will have to load the assets beforehand, so you will do cmd+shift+L, select the pictures you want to include, and then use the g: command. I’m working on that this morning, so expect an update shortly. The reason for this is that it will pre-load everything at first, and make it a lot faster to draw, also it will not draw it in CSS but in canvas.

Is there really no cut, copy & paste option anymore?

That should still work the same as before? It doesn’t work for you?

Edit: Just tested on OSX, copy/paste doesn’t work, I will fix that right away.

@nahfeld Just pushed an update to try and tackle the copy/paste issue, could you give it a shot and let me know if that works for you?

Great! It works.
Thanks for quick fix!

@neauoire I wonder, if there is a way to synchronize the tempo of Orca and TidalCycles.

EDIT: Sorry, me again. When I zoom in, everything outside the display area is erased. When I zoom out again, everything is gone. This applies to the latest version (on Mac).

(My replies are temporarily limited, so I added this here, even if it has nothing to do with each other )

Another strange behavior is that you can only use the load menu i.e. “File:Open” once per square.
None of these options work until I move my cursor again:

Question: There is a download themes option but not a load themes option in the menu anymore, is this intended?

This is how I was triggering graphics before:

..R3................
..2U8......R6.......
...........1Cz......
...;graphic:b;gif...
....................

If you load a new project with the window too small it just cuts off parts of the project to fit the window which is a new behavior I believe.

EDIT: Here is the error when trying to open something: source.js:30 File chooser dialog can only be shown with a user activation.
Lines forum limits my replies so I am stuck here. I am in Lurk if you want anymore info from me @neauoire

if there is a way to synchronize the tempo of Orca and TidalCycles.

Orca can listen to a midi device’s clock, or send its own. If tidal can sync to bpm, use shift+space to send bpm clock messages. It’s not something I use so I’m not 100% this works reliably.

When I zoom in, everything outside the display area is erased.

Ah! Nice catch, I’ll make sure that it clips to the furthest content.

you can only use the load menu i.e. “File:Open” once per square.

I’ll have a look, are you getting any errors in the console?

There is a download themes option but not a load themes option in the menu anymore, is this intended?

Ah yes, I will re-add the open theme button, in the meantime, you can just drag a theme over the window.

This is how I was triggering graphics before:

That will not change, I just need to implement this. I’m almost there, a couple of hours and it should work the same, you will have to load in the assets before tho.

Just spotted your post… I would be super delighted if orca could run on iOS! Keep us posted!

Thanks! Quick update: I’ve been working extra hours on my day job as a mobile programmer and am having a hard time finding energy to do more mobile programming. There are some challenges in the port that might take longer than the initial work.

Once the holidays come around, I should have plenty of free time. Source is on GitHub if anyone wants to contribute

Great! This should translate well to the iPad and other touch screens.

Fixed!

v148

Also, I’ve created a new theme menu under Orca

This is what is happening with my project from a few days ago:

Also Orca is still only letting me use the File menu options once per square on both my computers:

If you use the menu to open a project but instead cancel, than try again without having moved your cursor on the grid you will get this error, or I do every time unless I select a new square.

Just tested. Zoom works fine now. Thanks a lot !!!

Since I’m playing a lot with Orca right now, I noticed two more things. I hope that’s OK :grinning:
When I use ‘Load images’, I can only load jpgs. gifs will be ignored. But also with jpegs the image-background-function still doesn’t work?
I tried it with two pictures: 1.jpg / 2. jpg (in the same folder as the Orca-File) and this code:

It would be absolutely great, if this worked again.

When I use the File menu, (mostly) no dialog window opens up.
When I use the shortcuts, the dialog window opens (mostly).
It’s not dramatic, but something hangs here (Mac, 10.14.6)

@ezbot You describe it exactly.
That happens to me too. I have to move the cursor, otherwise the menu won’t work. Shortcuts go however…

Glad it’s not my computers, that would be awful!

Still working on graphics and color, I figured that the cropping erasing your project was more critical  I’m almost done with these 2 things, so gimme a little bit more time and it should work, I will share an update here when I got it working reliably!

Yeah, orca needs to have been clicked before the menu works properly, that’s since updating to Electron 7.0, I have some reading to do.

Stay tuned

I hope it didn’t seem impatient. I am super happy with Orca and your support.

Oh no, I didn’t take this as impatient, I’m grateful you reminded me of re-implementing this. :fist:

Pushed an update that fixes the color: command, remember that you can use the shorthand first 2 letters of any command.

I’ve also fixed an issue with copy/paste, copying from another application into Orca should work reliably once again.

Tomorrow, I will fix graphic:
