Hi Everyone, stumbled across Orca on this forum a year ago, but it didn’t make sense to me. A year later I stumbled across it again in a Perfect Circuit news letter. I watched some of Allieway Audio videos and the possibilities of its sequencing are making my head explode!

I want to get the full effect by also using Pilot as the synth but don’t understand anything about UDP and how to get them to work together. How do I send UDP? Can I do it on a mac, I’m such a newb I know. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to some text based sequencing and synthing!

Hey @Theflyingphil

It’s great that you want to get more into using ORCA together Pilot. Yeah wrapping your head around UDP without any prior knowledge can be a little confusing at first. I don’t know how familiar you are with MIDI communication to external gear but it is roughly the same.
first, open orca, then go to the “Communication” tab and click “choose UDP Port”. by default it should be 49161, but just to be save i suggest that you type it in and press ENTER. Now you know that ORCA is sending UDP over port 49161. Now you open Pilot. Pilot’s UDP port is also by default 49161. Now all you have to do is copy and paste

this

into ORCA, and now you should start to hear something.

a UDP message is specified in ORCA by typing “;” and then giving it 3 arguments. the first one marked with RED specifies the instrument that you are using in Pilot, the GREEN specifies the octave and note that you want to play.

I hope this answers you question

Hi.
I am totally new here, but I am in something like a quarantine.
I wanted to try this.
I am on a mac and have no idea about MIDI.
Most of the things I do happen on my iPad.
Is there a way to get the MIDI data from ORCA on my mac out to the iPad via USB?
Or I am using VCV Rack on the mac. But still I cannot connect the two programs.
Is anybody here who could point me into the right direction?

Hi @Markus_Z

Quarantine, yea you and me both
So, you say that most of what you do is on your ipad, I don’t normally use ipad’s but because of the quarantine i have access to one, and I am trying to see if there is a way to connect MIDI comming from ORCA with a synth on an Ipad ;).
I havent tried connecting it with VCV rack myself, but I know that others on this forum has worked with it before, maybe scroll back on the forum and see if you can’t find posts about that

Ok, i figured out how you would connect ORCA to an Ipad via Bluetooth MIDI.

first, on your mac you go to Audio MIDI setup, and then open the tap called “window” and select “show MIDI studio”.

inside the Midi studio you will want to click on the bluetooth icon, doing so will prompt a new window called “bluetooth configuration”, here you can name your bluetooth device and click advertise.

Now on your iPad open a synth that uses bluetooth and connect to the advertised MIDI bluetooth device that you named.

finally you will want to choose the correct MIDI device in ORCA.
and now you should hear that ORCA is sending MIDI data to the iPad app.

I hope this solves at least half of your question

Now to the other half, how would you connect ORCA to VCV rack
well, I found that the easiest way would be to just use the IAC driver for mac

Once thats done, going into VCV rack’s MIDI out module and setting its output to the IAC driver should be pretty straight forward, and then of course you also need to enable it in ORCA

It works!!! I realized when there was no communication drop down that I was using a version from a year ago! LOL. I can’t wait to get into this. After coffee first. Thank you so much for you quick and perfect response.

Thank you for that quick response.
To bad my mac is so old that midi over bluetooth does not work. Early 2011 MacBookPro. But I will try the iac at least. That sounds promising. But I want to use the midi from Orca into VCV Rack. I try this out later. Now I have to make my weekly shopping tour.
See you.

Hi folks. Complete Orca n00b here. Just trying to get some sound (hello world!). On Windows 10, using loopMIDI, which shows up as an output. I’m sending data according to loopMIDI, but not hearing anything. Just playing a C note every 4 beats. Open for suggestions!

Hi @birv2, which synth are you sending your notes to?

Thanks for the reply! I downloaded and installed pilot, but don’t know what to do next. I have an Arturia mini-controller but not with me.

Forgot to mention that I’ve got a Volca FM with me, but have no idea how or if that will work with orca.

Thanks. I tried port 49161, which I got from a YT tutorial, but stumped from there. Started pilot first, then orca, set up that udp port and tried banging a note every 4 frames. Not hearing anything just yet. Maybe it’s a W10 thing, or maybe I (clearly) don’t know what I’m doing. Help!

@Glitcher thanks! I’ve got it set up as you suggested, but still no sound… Wish I could graduate from having to edit my response and post more than 2 responses.

Pilot works with UDP you have to tell Orca the port to communicate through.

Use a semi colon instead of a colon for UDP. Colon is for midi. Set the UDP port to 49161

i mostly use my volca FM with Orca, works great. if you have a midi interface working, a midi call to midi channel 1 should work with it, make sure you have a bang triggering it. you may have to go to the Orca menu and turn off “send clock” or else it will try to play the stored sequence in the volca at the same time as it plays the midi notes.

i had some trouble banging pilot as well, see above in this thread. one day it just worked for me after a restart.

super pumped last night that i discovered the sample menu, finally! had been going back and forth with Timber Player, trying to load samples in there…”this doesn’t seem right…”

@fourhoarder Oooh, thanks! Can I pm you with my many questions as I tinker? Samples someday, but for now I’d be happy to hear a sound! Hello world!
