See if theres errors showing in the maiden output?

Check dmesg (command line via SSH) for anything out of the ordinary (errors) with regards to USB.

Check to be sure the keyboard is not haunted and sending crazy messages (use the HID Demo script to test)

I did all the tests, even downloading HID Script and it’s ok.
But as soon as I start using ORCA here’s what happen:

here also the result of my dmesg test
dmesg.rtf (29.9 KB)

there seems to be no mistake in maiden.
the problem is very annoying

Thanks

The only thing I can suggest is that there’s some process causing everything to slow down -

The stuttering, jumping in your video happens to me sometimes when I have too much stuff printing to the maiden REPL and that causes the norns stuff to slow to a crawl, etc.

No clue why this is happening with Orca here tho.

Reinstall Timber maybe?

I have updated timber and now it seems to be going well. Thank you

I feel like I’m missing something… Is it not possible to zoom in/out on the norns version of orca? Also, I’m having an issue where all timber sample playback is stopped whenever I try to send a parameter change.

Correct, there is no zoom in/out. The norns screen us pretty low pixel count. Zooming out wouldn’t really give you readable text.

Are you sending a zero value to a parameter? What parameter change are you attempting to send? Are you on the latest build of orca for norns? I had problems with this on an earlier build.

Gotcha, that makes sense. I thought I had seen someone mention the ability to zoom in on an IG post somewhere but maybe I’m mistaken. I’ve also just noticed on the tab menu that the parameter ID’s I was trying to edit are completely different than the ones at the top of this page… I didn’t realize they went past 1-9. Is there an updated list of parameter ID’s somewhere?

Well This is a marvel.

I finally got a Norns Shield and the first thing I did was fire up Orca and let it sequence my OP-Z

Not sure if I have issues with my Norns Shield or not but I seem to be maxing the CPU at about 10 instances of midi bangs, just with U’s connected.

Is this normal?

there’s a multi-timbrality limit at 7, IIRC.

I thought that that was for timber and not external midi devices…

ah yes i think you’re right.

I am running orca on a Norns shield and have been encountering stuttering or lag with even simple patches like just a ā€œD2ā€ triggering timber. I think the problem has to do with timber but I can’t troubleshoot any further than that. I a running everything at the latest version. Any help would be appreciated.

working with Norns Orca is a special challenge and I can’t help but think how much faster I could get this stuff done if I wasn’t having to tetris around units within a script, made much more difficult by the scrolling screen cut and paste limitations. I start out trying to see if something will work, some simple idea and then it expands and I have to put in controls and variables and it’s like gah why didn’t I just do it this way from the beginning?! best practices and all that. anyway! I enjoy the limitations of the format, and there is a simple purity in it for me, but I’ll bet a few of you have been there.

question: is there a reset on this version?? I just want to start from the 1.

I’m trying to wrap my head around sending midi cc. Map it to value 13 = D and send value 1 gives me maximum read in Digitone. Trying to modulate delay send for one of the tracks. Higher values, e.g. z gives me a lower value. Can’t see the logic here.
Edit: Did a print of the values sent and there seems to be something wrong witth the math. 1 gives me readout 127 for ā€˜val’ and higher values output up to 4445 for ā€˜z’
Edit #2: If i replace * 127 with * 3.65 in line 10 of _cc.lua I seem to get the correct values. ā€˜z’ gives 127. Is there an error in script or my cognitive ability to understand

Has anyone been successful in running ā€œUSB Keyboard Commandsā€ via SSH on the WiFi connection (Norns)? That is, on my MacBook, I wonder if I can control Orca through the command line after connecting to Norns via SSH (WiFi). Thoughts?

Cool idea! I’m not aware of a layer that connects SSH to Norns HID input, though. I have been playing with sending OSC between Norns and my laptop, which works pretty well, and feels more like the ā€œnativeā€ Norns protocol to me.

@license Oh awesome, thanks! I’ll give that a try. I assume you mean something like:

osc.send(to, path, args) or
osc.event(path, args, from)

in maiden. Otherwise, do you have any tips before I start going down a code-research-rabbit-hole?

Thanks again!

Yes, exactly that kind of thing. I don’t really have any words of wisdom, but I am happy to answer questions as I can. I will say that I managed to send 10 seconds’ worth of stereo buffer over OSC, just as an anecdote.

Started exploring orca today on norns shield and my mind is blown!
A couple of questions:

  • Are there any recommendations for a starting point?
  • Am I right assuming selection and copying and pasting is not going to work on norns?
  • Any general advices on orca?
