i wanted it to sound kind of like strings and distant so it fits with that sort of overture feel. in audition i cut out ambient bits from each of the tracks, i felt these were the memorable elements of the album. where there were beats i used sound removal, reverb, and hi freq cut to get rid. then i put a lot of convolution reverb on the sections and crossfaded them all. then more chorus and mastered so the parts didnt seem too dissimilar to each other

I was watching Workaholics as I was downloading the tracks and the first track came on right when Adam was getting a lap job from a stripper in a Gravitron (an amusement ride that spins you around and the g’s pin you to the wall) and it went so well I didn’t even realize it was the download I was thinking damn this music is pretty cool. So I went with just that track and the title track to work with as it was taking so long to download the album for some reason. Update: The album downloaded fine today. I blame U-Verse or the universe.

Thanks to Hixory for the mighty fine music. I was intrigued by the little micro cuts in the tracks. Crossfading between tracks mixed down to 2. Took the rhythm tracks Copied it to another track and panned L/R. The high sound 3 tracks Center L/R. Using volume dips and dops to try to move it around in the stereo field.

Half way through January already. We’ve had the first snow of the winter, so what better way to keep warm than to all sit round a roaring Disquiet Junto project.

First, thank you to Hixory https://archive.org/details/Hixory
for allowing me to mangle Lovegraphy. I brought all 7 tracks into Cubasis after a lot of listening since Thursday. I really don’t like mixing others work, mostly because I am not a great DJ and never seen to do the music justice :-/ But what the hell. Comfort zone be damned! I really tried to find complementary parts and work them into a stand alone track, while not using any pitch or time changing. I used a few fx but relied mostly on volume automation and a little panning. Hixory forgive me for what I have done :slight_smile:

I quite enjoyed Hixory’s album! It was pretty inspiring!

Notes to the track:
I took the initial part from all the tracks (one sample for each track, the duration depending on the material, but the start always been the start of the track). I then paul-stretched some of them by about 10-12x.
I used the glitches from track #1 and the pads from #3 in their stretched version (using 3 chords, layered them one top of the other) as a base and added samples from the other tracks to support the hence created structure.

Inspirational album from Hixory, that I had the pleasure of spending three nights with… :wink:

I’m not sure if I’ve done an overture! Not listened to any yet… I don’t listen to other juntos before I attempt mine. I like to base my Junto solely on the words in Marc W’s email.
So this is probably a remix, but of a whole album. I don’t mind if it is a remix, cause I believe this has been my first attempt at a … remix!

I added the kick on every four bars, to sound a bit heartbeat-like, for the album cover, but the rest of what you hear is from the album.

Apologies for the length. I am slipping again! If you have something to say, you should be able to say it in seven mins - and I broke my own rule tonight.

Thanks go to Hixory and to Marc Weidenbaum’s Disquiet Junto group for putting something as precious as this album in my fumbling paws.

My first go at Junto project, happy to finally do it. I immediately went for the ambient/pad sounds that intro’d most of the tracks. I grabbed the “beats” from track 1 and 4. Immediately thought of the work of Lee Gamble, taking old jungle tapes and building tracks from the interludes, and went for a similar approach. I used ppooll in Max/MSP to process the samples a bit, then put it all together in Ableton.

I followed my usual modus operandi for these projects: I pulled the tastiest samples I could find from each track, mapped them onto the 4/4 grid, looped them up, and applied effects as needed: timestretching, delay, reverb and auto filter.

Notes:

My process was similar to previous remix projects. I place each song segment on a track in my session, with each track receiving unique signal processing. I then use a combination of LFOs and live mixing to “perform” a mix in real time. It’s a very pleasurable way to work. Sometimes I don’t like the mix pass for whatever reason, in which case I’ll do another complete pass. I don’t do any editing of the final result. This one was about the third pass I think.

Probably about as far from being a remix as one can get. Reprinting my SoundCloud notes here:

I made a decision to tackle DJ projects which I otherwise might skip due to aesthetic differences, so I am finding ways to make that work for me. To be honest, the style of source music for this project is really not my cup of tea, so I took some serious liberties…
To be true to the project instructions, the piece is entirely built seven sound segments - one taken from each song. However, most of the segments are less than a second long - one beat from one track, the final percussive gesture from another, and so on.
These I transformed in two different ways: time dilation and what I call “slice and dice”, where I take random tiny (0.01 second) bits of a sound and pile them on top of each other. Most track segments appear at least once in each of these two transformations (except ‘Stracture’ which appears only once).
The title of the piece comes from the first two letters of the titles of each of the seven tracks, in order.
