I’m going to post these two items here (first, a message from the creator of VCV Rack, the code of which miRack is based on, who is talking about his licensing arrangement; the other from the creator of miRack, in response to the circumstances that the VCV Rack creator is describing) because they’re directly related to the development of miRack. I will ask two things:

  1. Maintaining Focus: If we end up in a lengthy discussion about the subject of licensing and ethics in coding, let’s split it into a separate Lines thread.

  2. Being Patient: Given that discussions about these topics have, historically, at times gotten testy, I’ll also ask that people be patient with each other if you experience disagreement.

I know very little about this and am very much on the periphery having never used VCV and only used miRack for a short period of time (thus far). That said, my observations are simply that the accounts from Andrew and Vitaly are contrasting, to say the least, making it impossible to really discern the “truth” (a problematic term, obviously, when such emotive issues as perceived intentions are involved). As with most scenarios, it’s easy to imagine that the truth lies somewhere between the two (somewhat conflicting) reports, but perhaps the truth is less important than the fact that the relationship between the two forks is now probably irreparably damaged.

I am inclined to share Andrew’s point of view.

I also find it disingenuous for Vitaly to accuse Grayscale of “harming the whole VCV Rack community” given the significant contribution to the success of VCV that Wes’s efforts represent.

I also regret purchasing miRack and I really hoped Vitaly had made better effort to collaborate in good faith when I did so. I now realize this hope was misplaced.

But VCV will emerge from this stronger and more capable of defending itself against commercial fragmentation.

The really frustrating thing about this, is that it’s really Apple’s licensing that is causing a problem here. We just want a tablet version of VCV. If Apple had a more open ecosystem, I have zero doubt that Andrew would happily provide such a version. Guess there’s always Windows!

My recollection is that when miRack first came out, Andrew said some neutral to positive things about it on the official Rack Facebook group, but then all of this apparently unfolded, and the relationship between the two developers soured. (I am inclined, as you are, to see it from Andrew’s point of view.)

Regarding the iOS version, when Andrew spoke at CCRMA (at Stanford) recently, he said it just wasn’t a priority due to the time and expense. Maybe those are related to Apples licensing, and to the more closed nature of the ecosystem. I’m not really sure. I’d like to know more.

I love VCV Rack on my Windows machine, which has a touchscreen. It’s not perfect, but it’s useful.

I’m bummed that the relationship is so sour now as well. I wouldn’t have bought MiRack if I had known of this stuff. Should I still use the app? Should I throw away my R Kelly records now that I wouldn’t dare play them out? Because now I would feel bad posting any MiRack content for fear of looking like I don’t respect an open source community.

At the end of the day, I feel like if Andrew started a gofundme or patreon etc. to make money to fund the iOS endeavors, that he would make the $$$ he needed pretty quickly. VcvRack is very popular. I really hope it does get ported in some fair way.

I think the scarce commodity for Andrew is time (not money).

I suspect he’ll get to it eventually, if he’s interested in doing so. I also suspect that the licensing issues and Apple’s desire to take a cut of every transaction may put a significant ding in his interest level, but then again, his interest level certainly seems to be somewhat responsive to where the community’s interests are headed. So who knows?

I just know that we only get to have one Andrew Belt, and that his time is his own.

I saw a post somewhere recently - possibly on Facebook - where the developer had removed the disputed content. Infuriatingly I can’t find it now, but was wondering if that changed anyone’s opinion at all?

I have to confess, I didn’t know VCV Rack (other than it existed) before MiRack so don’t really feel like I have any kind of grounds to pass comment.

For me personally, the fact that the miRack developer posted private correspondence from Wes Milholen as part of an unhinged rant (linked by disquiet above but now deleted) – and also spammed the VCV community forum with anti-Milholen rants – is sufficient to make me never want to check out miRack, regardless of the other issues. YMMV of course.

While I’m enjoying using it for now, I would drop it immediately if VCV came out for iOS…

Likewise, I wasn’t aware of any issues with VCV before I purchased it and, for what it’s worth, it’s a great fireguard for me (i.e. it keeps me away from thoughts of going modular). I haven’t used it much but that might change with the AUv3 and external MIDI support

The latest update, 1.65, includes audio input (direct hardware, as well as through Audiobus and AUM). My MicroBrute is now running through the Clouds port. This is a good thing.

I’m using multiple instances of MIRack and Ripplemaker to do a performance this weekend. Here’s a MORack version of an interesting Krell patch posted on the VCVRack Patchstorage forum. The original required you to tap the trigger button every once in a while; I added a Bernoulli gate to feed back the output of the patch into the first UMIX/AD/S&H stage to make it free-running. It needs a tap or two to get it rolling, but after that it will happily run with no further interference. Tweaking the Bernoulli feedback will let you change the variance, but it’s essentially a chaotic system, so even small changes will change the sound quite a bit.
