Yeah, it’s the least sexy thing on earth to spend $600 on. I’m probably about to do two more too. But the tradeoff in comfort and workflow and ergonomics has been worth it!

Wow, does the marshmallow pickup sand grains well?

That looks fantastic. Great photo! I’ve been doing some hourglass experiments and your post motivated me to share.

Here is one where the sand was replaced with iron filings and the neck of the hourglass is wound with magnet wire. A CV signal through a DRV tile controls the flow of the grains. When a small current is applied the grains lock in the neck. I’m still experimenting with attaching tines to the piezo pickup. It can be a little messy if I’m not careful.

Yes! It’s cool, Gieskes is awesome! I was looking for something less technical and easier to swap different hourglasses out and ended up going for piezos. I’ve been playing with the idea of productising it into a white noise generator/meditation timer. Unfortunately bigger hourglasses are very receptive to room noise and active noise cancellation would be difficult to get right. So the product is on hold and I’m recording a lot of different hourglasses in an anechoic chamber as an album instead.

I would like to learn how to properly work with glass but I’m a total beginner. I used a diamond hole saw drill bit under a stream of water to open the top and bottom holes. It was slow going and still cracked a little. The top funnel is just glued in place.
