I’ve been working on an album for some time now. I’m not entirely sure what the core concept of it is, but it’s got to do with exploring the sound of various objects through looping, sampling and collaging. They also somehod all relate to my childhood memories, or sometimes the lack of them.
Took those photos a bit after the fact I admit. It’s mostly to remind myself what I have used, and maybe they can turn out to be useful if I ever release the thing.
Colours need fixing though.

Is that an ACTUAL oil can reverb?

Even better, it’s an organic extra virgin olive oil can reverb!
unfortunately it doesn’t sound very reverby, at least not yet. I think I’d need a bigger oil can or maybe it’s just the placement of the microphone. It’s got fun sound as a speaker though.

Why do you feel it is important, to create your own sound sources, or instruments and effects?

Cool! I am loving mine in a big way. The Shuttle Control is a bit confusing at first, as most of the channels are preset for multiple voices, but it handle polyphony really elegantly, so you can send a bunch of CV and gate data at it on the same midi channel and it allocates the voices in a very musical way. So this works great for the norns sequencers that only send on 1 midi channel yet are polyphonic. Here’s some stuff I did yesterday, sequencing the shuttle and an 0-coast with the OP-Z, using shuttle control preset 3 (for 3 voices over 1 midi channel). Let me know if I can help out in any way, have fun!

Sounds like a pretty broad question, which would likely deseve its own thread. Not sure we want to derail this one by embarking on such a discussion.
It’s an interesting quesiton though.

You might want to check these somewhat related thread before creating a new topic, though. Maybe the question has been discussed already:

I am intrigued by the olive oil can reverb and would love to hear more about it. These photos are super inspiring. Thank you for sharing.

This morning I’m playing around with striking springs with a hard drive actuator.

New mixerless setup for me in a new’ish space. Still mostly digital these days (not pictured well: SuperCollider and JACK).

I love that contact mic’d kazoo. I’ve done a bit with contact mics but never thought to try that. Seems so obvious now, to see one built.

Great sounds! Can’t wait to dig in and will most likely take you up on that offer for help. Thanks!

if you’re willing to share, i’d love to hear some sounds featuring that violin!

I’ll try to record something once I have some more tests. Let’s see if I can get it to work!

Very interesting! Is there springs mounted onto the actuator that hit the springs on the reverb tank?

I myself saw one online and thought kind of the same thing. I have to add that something is weird with my build. Maybe it’s just a crappy piezo, but I get a bad low frequency hum. Also one thing I hadn’t properly considered is that I have to create a new exit for air&sound, now that the piezo is covering the original one.

Oh nice.

What are the arm things?

of course! this one features it fairly prominently: https://awavepress.bandcamp.com/album/ingress

Thanks! The actuator holds a short length of music wire and the motor holds a few strands of snare wire. I just recorded a video showing the actuator mods and some play.

Another one from last night. This time the Organelle was a looper (Overloop), processor (reverb), and generator (gendy + rngs) – all in Orac 2.0. The small DOD mixers allow me to set different levels for Tetrax’s attack/release signal, use the individual oscillators’ outputs, and add a contact microphone to boot  All in all, it’s quite a powerful setup.

a real loss for the DIY community when he passed… his enthusiasm and generosity were exemplary.

Very cool sounds! Thanks a lot for sharing this and showing us how you made it!

In the meantime, I’ve posted a bit more about the oil can reverb in the Transducers / Exciter Speaker in case you want to hear some recordings of how it sounds.

Absolutely. Sorry to see that his website is now offline. I wonder if it is archived anywhere?
(I shouldn’t take this thread off-topic - I guess there are DIY threads where this could be picked up.)

still there, i think: http://musicfromouterspace.com/
