I did a fun live in-studio performance/collaboration with a video artist last night. I haven’t had to pack gear for a show in months, so this is what I settled on…

In contrast to the many pictures of modular systems that actually work & function as musical instruments, I would like to present my current system:

It consists of a 1u VCA, Links, and Kinks. I felt like the modules would like to have a lot of space to swim in. Also, although this system can only produce noise (from Kinks), it does make nice red & green colors.

(This is my first modular system and I’m learning that it can take a while before modules ship from stores, especially if you buy modules from Europe. It should actually make some sounds soon! And many thanks to the fine people here; without Lines I would not have decided to take the plunge.)

Surely you mean “… especially if you live in the US”, no?

Ah yes, good point – that is true, I do live in the US. Ordering modules from Europe when you live in Europe is probably a lot easier!

That’s a Quadratt (attenuator/attenuverter/mixer) rather than a vca, so you’ll likely want to add a vca as well. Quadratts are great, though!

Hah! The past few weeks I’ve also been floor-jamming through the same IKEA speaker…

Gorgeous synth too…

Always good to go slow with a first modular system (with any modular system, I think), otherwise you risk running out of space before the modules you’ve put in make sense as a whole, and not just on their own. Smart choice of a case. Kinks may not be much but with some self-patching you can use it to dirty up another audio signal, i.e. as an effect. Enjoy the journey =]

Looks like a very focused set-up to me!

How are the multi-cores working out for you? How far are you running and are you running v/oct? I bought a pair but haven’t made a use for them yet.

They are working out very well. Running various lengths of CAT7 cable. The longest are at least 20 ft.

A few years ago I did some testing of 1 V/octave signals. My ears detected nothing off-putting.

It’s great for floor jamming, and actually a pretty great speaker all in all.
The Jasper Wasp is amazing. Because very limited, you are forced to search for sweet spots or go full weird. But with Samara on the norns, I can build up large ambient scapes.

Is that a discontinued model? I’m not seeing it on the IKEA site…

It’s the eneby 30. But with the grill off. The white model unfortunately has a speaker grill made of what looks like old bus seats.
