Here are a couple of pictures my friend took of one of the installations I just finished for my show at the Soap Factory in Minneapolis. I am sharing these here because I think they are awesome photos, BUT also, because there is a “sound-making machine” involved! You see that cymbal mounted on the wall way back? It is one of the set of four, placed throughout multiple galleries at the Soap. They are all driven by solenoid motors via Bastl Solenoid module, and sequenced by White Whale producing synchronized patterns flowing through various rooms :wink:

I love my MacBook, and it’s powerful enough for the sort of things I’m doing. The screen is lovely compared to my previous air. I don’t patch in max or run party van. I generally run live with terms sequencing external gear. Then I route the audio back into live for effects and processing. Sometimes I also use oscillot and other soft synths, and everything works quite well!

The MacBook is what incites my envy more than anything. I assume you’re using a USB-C to USB converter and/or hub. Has that converter caused any problems with any aspect of your hardware/software? Rather than concerns about the CPU power, this is the one area I’m cautious about, as I’ve so many issues with USB compability/backward-compatibility in its many versions.

I use the apple usb-c to usb/hdmi/power adapter ($60), with no connectivity problems of any sort yet. I’m using a novation audio hub (3 usb ports) with an additional powered usb hub on one of those ports, to then connect to a 128, a slim phatty, a minitaur, an iconnectivity mio driving a volca beats, a push, an iPad, and an external display, all with zero issues. All in all, it seems very solid. And all I need to do to take the MacBook on the go is unplug the one single cable. Plug it back in, launch live, and everything is ready to go! Highly recommended.

That’s great to hear. I had seriously considered getting it instead of a MacBook Pro, but had read so many opinions, when it was first announced, cautioning against it for music making. I thought the dissents were most likely hyperbolic, but didn’t wish to take the risk. But it’s good to know USB-C won’t be an issue when I go for a MacBook in the future.

Not as well organized as some others here, apparently. I find whenever things are organized I feel at peace, but also haven’t laid things out in such a fashion that it’s all actually useable. That’s probably just an excuse though :slight_smile:

This is the tiny setup for when I was playing in Japan recently

Nord Micro Modular + OP-1 + Contact + Mic + Loopy HD on old iphone.

And then the tiniest setup yet, when I’m traveling and just need somewhere to sketch

(sadly enough, the op-1 isn’t even mine, I just keep finding people to lend them to me for extended periods of time (9+mos). Should probably just bite the bullet and buy one eventually).

some upgrades, some removals. this plus guitar + distortion pedal is current live set-up. Tried to work without the OT for a while but once it went back in the rig i realised how much I’d missed it.

Are you using that faderfox w/ the octatrack?
What do you have mapped to the controls?

I’ve been using a little old doepfer pocked control with mine. It just has two rows of 8 knobs. The top row I have mapped to the main volume control for each track and the bottom to the cue volume for each track. I use the cue outs like an effects send to process the tracks with external gear (mostly granular eurorack stuff).

yeah the faderfox has opened up the OT for me in live use. I use the OT in possibly not the most traditional way so my mapping might seem strange.
On the OT track 5 is a thru and 6,7,8 are all neighbour tracks giving me an 8 block fx unit that I feed my guitar through. (With all those lovely Plock rhythm possibilities) . so the right half of the FF is all just controlling those fx.
The bottom row of the FF controls levels for tracks 1 - 4 on the OT
Tracks 1 + 2 of the OT are set as recorders (which I can feed anything into :slight_smile: ) and the left half of the FF is 2 identical strips. Mapped from the top to bottom as

Sample length
Sample start
Sample Rate
Level

make sense?
I then sometime use trks 3 + 4 to playback pre-made sounds/loops. I find using the OT as a 4 track and fx unit lets me ‘play’ it more than trying to manage 8 trcks of playback :slight_smile:
Oh and the cue output goes to the Aleph/H9/RNLA chain.
