My setup is unorthodox as well…
Lately it’s been:
Track 8 - thru machine w/ cross fader assigned to volume of input A/B on one side and C/D on the other
Track 5,6,7 - pickup machines
Tracks 1-3 - flex machines, each referencing the recording slots of the pickup machine right across from it (so I can slice + repitch the looped recordings however I please)
Track 4 - static machine with longer field recordings

The whole thing works great for looping / processing live instruments. It’s all running as a asynchronous multitrack looper. I never even press play on the whole thing… I never use it for sequencing anything

The octatrack is a crazy deep machine. I got interested in it first when I found out that I could have 8 realtime asynchronous looping recorders in one box… I was previously using a chain of different looping pedals. I don’t make rhythmic music so I didn’t have much use for the sequencer functions at the moment.
I wound up finding a great deal on a used one and couldn’t pass it up.

ah, wait til you get your head around trigless trigs you can create subtle or drastic shifts in the sounds on your flex/static machines, not synced to the sounds your looping, just at specific intervals, and with independent track lengths they can all shift asynchronosly
I like to use it as a way of surprising myself while improvising. Time is involved, yes, but not such much rhythm (…he says, risking the start of a massive philosophical debate!.. I’ve already hijacked the pictures thread with all this OT OT chat… best to start another thread if this is to continue )

Here are a couple of pictures my friend took of one of the installations I just finished for my show at the Soap Factory in Minneapolis. I am sharing these here because I think they are awesome photos, BUT also, because there is a “sound-making machine” involved! You see that cymbal mounted on the wall way back? It is one of the set of four, placed throughout multiple galleries at the Soap. They are all driven by solenoid motors via Bastl Solenoid module, and sequenced by White Whale producing s…

This particular space is 2500 sq ft which I covered with asphalt paper, and then 400lb of salt in which i hand-rendered text in Blackletter using a spackle knife.
