Still have my 6u60 set up for tour, but I’m having a hard time focusing with the uncertainty. Given that, I’ve been distracted thinking a lot about the Leibniz system from XAOC, so I decided to take the plunge and grab a Jena to see how that might expand its possibilities in this little 6u50 case. Wish I could still fit my RIP in there, but not sure what could be sacrificed, so oh well…

Would love to hear how you take to the Leibniz system as you tinker with it in the future. I’m considering a similar move.

Voluntary confinement means she has more toys to play with.

As RIP is passive, I tend to put it in a little cardboard box when I want to use my small system away from the main desk.

Yeah, I have it just sitting next to the case, and that’ll work for now. I have a nice DI anyway if I actually were to take this out to play a set. No idea if that’ll even happen, so I’m not sweating it.

That is a very satisfying black/silver split!

Thank you, I think so too. 33 hp of dark, 32 hp of light.

Years ago, I managed to pick up this set of Suzuki hand chimes secondhand for sod all… No one seemed to be interested in them… but I loved the idea of doing some distributed ensemble playing

Researching them further I discovered Suzuki make add on octaves & after a couple of years of stalking Japanese auction sites I finally managed to get an octave add on

While researching I also came across this Japanese group Sangatsu that play them - in the vid below I especially love the improv at the start - they clearly have a system of gesture based rules! Somehow the abrupt dampening they do also reminds me of similar tonality/dynamic shapes I hear in some Japanese electronic music…

(obviously wont be playing them in a group anytime soon due to lockdown… but mine are also definitely destined for Kontakt so i can play more than 2 notes)

How dare you tease us with the SQ-01 off to the side like that!

hah! It is my second SQ01 - the first one I bought locally and the seller warned me it was sold as DOA… I got my local tech to try fixing it & he got it to power up but couldn’t get it to make any sound… I follow a vintage synth repair group on FB (cos why not) and someone in US appeared on there who was fixing one and also claimed to have designed a non-volatile memory for them… He had one on his bench at the time so after discussion I sent him mine, thinking at worst he could A/B my broken one against his working one… Years passed & frankly fck knows what happened but I never heard from him again… So I had a hankering to replace it & eventually got one from Japan, and thankfully it is fully working! Just haven’t had time to find a permanent spot in my studio for it… It frightens my subwoofer

Such a cool piece of gear that you rarely see. Sorry to hear your first one never found its way back to you.

In hindsight it probably wasn’t viable… especially shipping NZ>USA>NZ but they are fairly rare so I presumed eventually it would work out, I guess its been stripped for parts or been fixed & sold by now… c’est la vie

Terrible. At least you were able to eventually replace it. I dont even recall the last time i’ve seen one of those for sale.
