Wow thank you so much! That really does mean a lot to me- I put a really long time into getting it into shape and am so happy it exists.

This is amazing. I just want to make music now. Cool how someone else’s rig that is so far removed from what I have can spark such inspiration to engage with what I have.

Curious whether that is intended for one or two players?

Either way it’s gorgeous!

Thanks for sharing…

Any vids ? Lovely set up.

This is proving to be a fun and powerful little setup, powered off a usb battery so portable too

My project for the last few weeks, inspired by the David Klavins Una Corda piano; a custom built single string unison piano. I have a bit of a history as a piano technician, so when I spotted this free console piano on craigslist near me I couldn’t resist. It actually wasn’t as much work as I thought it would be. Most of my time was spent repairing broken action parts and cleaning the dust out of it. I made a simple aluminium tool for tying the coils a the end of each string, the rest of the tools I had left over from working on pianos professionally. I also fitted a removable felt rail that gives it a beautiful soft sound. I’ve yet to record anything other than some simple improv, mostly because I’m waiting for the tuning to stabilize. As for the sound, it’s almost like a rhodes; it has a very plucky attack with a sustain that quickly muffles out the upper harmonics. Below are some photos I took during the modification.

So that’s just one long wire?

One wire per string, typically each note of a piano has three strings, where one of the three is wrapped to the note next to it. In this configuration, the outer two strings have been removed, and where the center string would be wrapped, it is instead tied in a coil and hooked directly on the hitchpin.

Thanks for the education. That sounds like quite a project!

That seems like an amazing project. And the photography is wonderful too! Inspiring in and of itself.

its just for me to play- i will mostly be using one norns with timber player and the other with loom. but i can also jump back and forth with timber player sets to load new projects while the other one is playing. mostly this rig will be playing pre-determined stuff and i won’t be touching it much on stage.

@Ravel - as of now its for a show which should premiere on oct. 17 of this year. so, all things considered, i should have some video of everything in a few months. our last creation stretch is the end of august. i’m guessing the music will be done by early june (i hope).

Working on some new dual transducer stuff (a tiny one in a 3d-printed grip, and a larger one attached to the snare (also in a 3d-printed housing)).

Should have a video soon.

p.s. who needs adapters when you have alligator clips…

I’m curious about this, how long of a session can you fit in on one charge of the external battery?

Not sure, as I tend to play for a few hours (2-3?) then when I take a break, plug the battery in to charge.
There are 4 leds on the battery, only seen 1 go out so far - perhaps voltage will drop in last 25% , so I’d think it be ok for at least 6+ hours?

Isolation setup. After adding norns, it feels so much more complex.

Nice rig! Did you build your Norns, it’s got a great vibe?

CGS BOG net yet finished but almost there. Still have a SWAMP to build if I run out of work to do during the lockdown.

Improved my Doepfer Wasp self-oscillation mod by swapping the advised 10k resistor for a 20k pot and tweaking it (and the on-board trimmer pots) till I got a more reliable range - previously it would peter out if you went too high or low.

I asked a friend build it but it seemed like a pretty straightforward build. At the price of Norns shield it’s a steal for this beast. I’m very much into looping right now and there are really beautiful scripts for that.
