I received this lovely Zither from James Jones Instruments in the US a couple of weeks ago. It’s like God’s Own Medieval Music Easel. All solid woods (Spruce, Cherry and Walnut), sounds lovely, 2 1/2 octaves, currently diatonically tuned to G. I learned all my my guitar modes in G last year, and it’s very easy to visualise and play them the same on this, which has been a lot of fun for overdubs recently. Modal madness Laraaji shenanigans ahoy, etc…

That looks gorgeous! Is it plucked like a harp, or do you use hammers like a dulcimer?

You can play it however, but traditionally plucked with fingers or a plectrum. I’m saving up for one of his Bowed Psalterys at the moment. He was lovely to deal with, can highly recommend.

Why did the Psych Folk band fall out of a tree?

Because its dulcimer was hammered…

Lovely. I’d love one of Jame’s hammered Dulcimers but they are way more expensive. Recently fell totally in love with the sound of the bowed psaltery so will probably go for one of those.

How do you like the Dark World reverb? I’ve always been curious about that one.

I picked one up a month ago when the last run came out and I love it! Didn’t think I would love a mono reverb this much. The dark channel is super unique and capable of twisting a sound into a beautiful low-fi smear while the world channel holds up against other digital reverb emulations.

Put the two together in serial and you can get a whole new instrument. Just realized this paragraph sounds just like their marketing but they hit it on the head.

I never thought I would be happy with a mono reverb but this one is super special. Been able to dial in some unique sounds from the “dark channel” and once you get midi’d up with the dip switches, it becomes insanely expressive - I use Disaster Area’s midi box and assign the faders to a host of functions. love it. Mood overall is still my favorite pedal however.

what’s that fun pedal stand? something you made yourself?

One of the left is 3D waves OPZ rack - purchased 2 of them on reverb. They are sold out till September I believe but they go for $60 and super flexible. The other is the Holeyboard pedal rack - also on Reverb.

Got an as-new fake gameboy for a decent price. Will be interested to hear how it compares sound-wise, some reviews imply it has a slightly different pitch.

Which of these three objects has absolutely no connection to the other two?

For a little context, I actually took this picture totally inspired by the thought that I was starting to see connections in all the things I love. Been going down something of a music theory rabbit hole lately which started because of a geometric drawing John coltrane made. I’ve also been trying to get my eurorack to make weird saxophone tones hugely inspired by spiritual jazz. All of which i came upon through sampling hence the SP-303.
