This is incredibly beautiful!

Thanks for all the kind words :relaxed:

The rather strange shape was chosen because it was premiered in a larger concert where the instruments of the different works appear and disappear before and after the performance.
The Structure was hanged from a crane… :building_construction:

Your work… it’s mesmerizing. I’ve just spend an hour watching your Vimeo channel. Thank you for documenting everything so well.

I’ve always wanted to learn how to control motors and solenoids. There’s a lot out there on the web but I’m wondering if you have any favorite resources for someone just getting started?

Just wanted to chime in how fantastic your video is @pelang
I love the intimacy of the sounds. Did you rosin the wooden bobin wheels?

I must say that Im really not sure about that site specific delivery with the crane and everything. It looks like it would really overwhelm the instrument and the sound but I guess this is one way to curate a host of sound making artworks. From a crane as well -that isn’t cheap.

Was there really a copy of Rodin’s The Burghers of Calais a few feet away?

thanks!
and yes there are rosin applied phenolic resin (cotton fabric) wheels. It’s not wood but can be machined like plastics and keep the rosin nice in place.
The larger festival wasn’t organized by us and honestly, I agree that the costs of the crane were insane and did not add a lot of value to the festival.
yes, there is an org. Rodin but the museum created it for security reason: :slightly_smiling_face:

It depends on how you would like to use it. For example, Bastl has a trigger to solenoid/motor/led converter for eurorack modular synths. https://bastl-instruments.com/eurorack/modules/solenoid
or use some kind of microcontroller like Arduino.
Get some cheap small motors, hot glue, and maybe a hand drill to start.
Not so much focus on mechanics but Handmade Electronic Music by Nicolas Collins is a good read for diy.

Yes- I work for a museum and I wouldnt let a crane hover anything over one of our statues.basic risk management applies. According to wiki there are 12 castings of that statue- thats what i meant by copy.

Regardless of strange festival curating decisions it sounds like a good project to be invited to so congrats on that.

Thanks for explaining about the wheels. so can i ask about the membranes? are they latex?

Latex dries out quickly and breaks. I use a thermoplastic elastomer with the abbreviation TPE that has the advantages of both these material groups (constant thermal moldability - repeated usability - and elasticity). SEBS,stryrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene
(Sorry for the detail and o.t.)

THanks  Yes we kind of ‘soft launched’ this one i guess ha. Congrats on getting one of the first!

I like the concept and textures and how you used historical maps for the PCB layout. Are there any details available on what the knobs/jacks do or is it supposed to be kind of a mystery?

Thanks  The two right-hand knobs control the amount/type of power-starvation to the main oscillators, the left two are kiind of frequency and resonance of a pseudo-filter (actually more like a VCO controlled by the noise from the main oscs) and the centre knob is a wet-dry mix between the filtered and unfiltered sound.

Looks interesting - nice art, but I have to admit, the name seems in poor taste - a lot of people died there, even more were seriously harmed and it’s still a complete disaster area! Why not the 911-iser or the Grenfell-iser ? I’d find those equally unpleasant… unless I am completely misunderstanding the reference ???
