I can’t seen to figure out what that horizontal blue bar of jacks at the bottom of that instrument does, or where it comes from, or exactly how large it is (seems bigger than 1U) so I am left to believe it is a bit of custom wizardry by Meng Qi himself.

It does seem that all he’s got in the rack besides the Mysterious Blue Bar is a Teletype, Just Friends, Three Sisters, a Chronoblob, and an Erica Synths Pico Output. One would imagine he is using JF in Just Type polyphony mode?

That was my guess too.

I love his work. His custom builds are out of this world.

I’m patiently waiting for a few of his modules to show up; on a slow boat from China.

I do believe @MengQiMusic has an account here…

updated with tag, thanks!

@tehn thank you for reposting.

green pcb at the bottom is peter’s rolz circuit, which would “generate sophisticated beat patterns including chaos at ultrasound frequencies”. by connecting nodes by touch or wire, i alter the pattens and signal, then use them to control modules, mainly teletype.

so it’s a controller which is generative and controllable at the same time, with a chaotic but not random behavior which can be learnt though time and practice.

just type is the core of this build, it redefined the meaning of the word “computer” for me and many.

Will you be making some of those Rolz modules as a full board as opposed to smaller pieces a la http://modularaddict.com/mengqi-rollz5-pcb ? Thanks.

that beautiful @MengQiMusic post earlier reminded me of these 1u strips he made recently that I apparently missed the boat on. does anyone have any more information on these? functionality, etc? they’re gorgeous.

They crossfade between different sources. I guess the ones with the black rubber thing does it via pressure instead of contact (by using a conductive film between the rubber and the contacts).

Hi all, This is my first post… My name is Sean and live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I make music under the name “Assembler/Responder”. I have been making music with synths and gizmos for a decade but just in the past year have fallen into modular after doing some Video / Design work for Make Noise Music and getting paid in gear. Now I am hooked! My next direction will be in Monome / Mannequins after I tangle and master the Shared System here… I thought you may enjoy a little look at my current setup. (filled that hole in the top row with a 4ms SMR, btw)

Lovely to see this all on top of a piano. Is that an electric or a miniature upright?

It’s a 1968 Fender Rhodes Student Model, in lovely Avocado Green… I reinforced the lid with an x-brace of light wood to take the weight of everything. Sounds great and is a pretty good table for all that junk!

Wow - you just gave me a good idea in terms of studio / setup arrangement. Arranging a studio can be tricky and so many great instruments get cast aside as a result of space. My Wurly is a good example. Time to reconfigure

Just found these in case you’re interested: https://kenrichsounds.com/shop/wurlitzer-electric-pianos/straddler-ii-wurlitzer/.

As a challenge, I would like to suggest, that every post in this thread should be accompanied by a picture, since pictures of our sound-making devices and studios/events are the stated focus of this thread.

SO, if you absolutely need to engage in some form of discussion here, please take a moment, and consider illustrating your comment with another picture.

OR start another thread,
OR private message the poster whom you might have some questions to.

(As an illustration of this challenge, I am including a picture of my beloved SHMC, which, much to my deep despair and internal turmoil, I had to sell last year… )
