Yeah I know, but I try to avoid that:)

@kveye i think it should be in maiden? it was merged earlier today.

@cosmicsoundexplorer the crow doesn’t seem too bad to do, will get into it!

@JHC, @LT6J, @encephalitislethargi thanks for the kind words

@SPIKE yeah i realized that this script requires a little more kung fu than my others. let me see if i can get you out on the road

the waveform is normally grayed out (my videos had boosted contrast), so when you play a note you should see your note travel through the waveform in a bright pattern.

on the op-1 the midi is weird, and seems to work (for me) only after going out of synth mode and then back into synth mode. can you try that if you’re using the op-1 midi?

if you are in “sampler” mode the midi during recording is turned off. if you aren’t in any mode, double check the midi during rec and make sure it is yes. also check that only play during rec is no. this should make sure you get midi emission no matter what.

since you have an op-1 an easy test is to do the following. plug in the audio and midi from op-1 into norns. record one bar on the op-1 with a note from any engine. have that play indefinetly. switch to a synth (like pulse) where you can turn the volume all the way off. now you should be able to play the midi (with only audio from your pre-recorded material) and the midi should activate the samples.

hmu if its still troublesome.

i’ve noticed its a bit sensitive on the norns shield to get it to move one space between modes. i could hook it up to something like K1+K3 instead to switch modes too.

Your scripts are really something special, I gotta say! Gonna use this on voice when I’m back home.

v0.2: added random harmonizer

you no longer need midi input. you can turn on the “harmonizer” which emits random notes from a set scale/root using your current sample. here’s an example (randomizer is the first 15 seconds):

changelog

  • feature: randomized harmonies added
  • feature: add volume control (in parameters and K1+E1)
  • ui: group parameters

How do I use a midikeyboard with this wonderful script? Have connected my keystep via usb, but nothing happens. What are I’m misding?

make sure your device is set to number 1. goto system -> midi and then select your midi device. i’d suggest trying “sampler” mode (turn E1). sample something and then see if pressing a key on your midi device activates the sample. if you can open maiden and watch the output you should see something happening when you press a midi key. lmk if you still have issues.

I’ve solved it.:+1:t2: had the same keyboard connected in two slots thanks

Have you checked the publison stuff yet ? There is a video on youtube I think. The publison infernal machine got into my mind while playing with your script you might want to give it a look for some more inspiration .
Again thanks for your work.

@LT6J do you have any links to that infernal machine? i couldn’t find many demos on youtube except for ebay sellers showing they light up lol.

my inspiration was initially to use this for vocals but…it is very underwhelming for vocals for my purposes

instead, i’m planning on improving it for instruments. i have an idea to allow multiple of the same note so i can get a “unison” effect. sort of a trumpet/sax ensemble follower…

This is the best example I could find of “publison sound” on youtube : https://youtu.be/b6UUJyLtICI
It is not the infernal machine unfortunately but it gives the idea of what they were cooking at publison.

I have a lot more to share but they are all from instagram. If you want more just send me a direct message and I’ll collect some of the best to send you.

Interesting! Just giving it a go now, seems promising. Reminds me a bit of the weird sampler modes on the Boss RSD-10 I have

should a mini launchpad also work? I am probably doing something wrong. Harmonising without midi seems to work and gives nice results already, so thanks!

This looks incredible. Cannot wait to try it.

@koen i’m not sure about mini launchpad - is it sending midi notes? right now piwip doesn’t understand any midi cc.

i’m adding in some improvements for this script but its still not quite where i wanted it to go… it seems to work well for long droney instruments but not for faster stuff (like vocals / instrument noodling).

I am a novice with midi so not sure right now. For some apps I can use the launchpad, but that is maybe via midi cc. I have to check these things, midi note vs midi cc  Anyway, thanks for the cool app!

Played around with Piwip this evening and had a lot of fun. Super cool to sample and immediately play back - could see it being very practical in a live setting. I didn’t have too much luck transposing in real time, but still is super cool to grab a sample and play it up and down a keyboard. Dialing in real time transposition would make “the Messina” and would be incredible.

thanks  would love to hear what you’re coming up with on this script!!

i was reaching for a messina-type thing but its still out of my grasp i admit. i really like this script and think it has potential but i’m sorta waiting for the next idea to come along to push it down the line…

the big difference between this and a lot of harmonizers/vocoders/autotuners is that this uses tape-speed to modulate pitch rather than a carrier frequency. this results in artifacts when pitches change. i thought that the resulting artifacts might be cool sounding, but they are mostly not :frowning: (for me anyways) so that leaves me trying to get rid of them, which is tricky because there aren’t too many tools for tricking out the tape speed.

still, i have an update coming with “ensemble” mode which should emulate playing together with a group of instruments, even though you only have one.

This is awesome. The vocal possibilities remind me of the Prismizer effect that Bon Iver uses on 22 a million. I think he uses the Antares Harmony Engine mapped to midi.

v0.3.0 new mode: “ensembler”

the “ensembler” mode is supposed to let you pseuo-play multiple other instruments simultaneously (each instrument plays slightly behind you at slightly different rates).

a demo:

changelog

  • feature: allow specific notes for harmonizer
  • feature: new mode “ensemble” for pseudo-playing multiple instruments (up to 5)
