It sounds amazing but I’m surprised it’s out in the wild without MIDI.

Finished an ambika build recently. Pretty amazing synth, but I’ve really just started to scratch the surface of what it can do. Getting to build it out myself gave me a deeper appreciation for it vs. any other synth I’ve played so far. Sound sample linked below.

Which filter boards did you use?

All SVF cards. Wanted the 3 different filter types, and they sound great.

I do, it’s a lot of fun! sounds great in my opinion and i’ve really enjoyed getting to know it.

Interesting, looking at some clips I was interested in the Juno-esque possibilities, for which people seem to recommend the SMR4 board. SVF looks to be most flexible though.

Right, I really like the sound from what I’ve heard. It would be interesting to hear if you come across any quirks or features which aren’t obvious from the specs. One thing I’ve noticed people saying is that preset saving isn’t quite perfect yet as some parameters are missed. Seems like a fairly minor issue.

I did notice that at first, but when I updated the firmware it seemed to be fixed. Now that I think about it mine didn’t come w/ a lot of the presets, and I had to put them on myself from the mfb website.

This was also an issue with the Dominion Club for me; MFB seem to do that sort of thing.

Are there any polysynths that let you sequence through different oscillator shapes on each voice/key press? The same way a lot of paraphonic synths round robin through the oscillators.

I believe you can set it so you get a random value per note on Hydrasynth if you set an LFO to both sample and hold and one-shot. I don’t own one though so someone who’s actually used would have to chime in.

I do agree with you that voice number should be a way more common mod source on polyphonic instruments. (although perhaps you weren’t making that point.)

I was thinking more along the lines of having oscillator waveform as a modulation destination, but both would be great to see on more things.

Seems like a wavetable synth with a sequencer would be the most likely to do something like this now that I think of it.

the vermona perfourmer does this (but only features basic wave shapes). it’s only kind of a polysynth though.

the matriarch might do this too, but it’s only paraphonic.

considering how nice this modulation can sound, I am also surprised it’s not more common.

Hydrasynth is a wavetable synth with waveform as a mod destination. I sort of assumed you were aware, sorry I didn’t mention that part.

you could technically do this on the Digitone by either mapping velocity to the “harmonics” waveshaper destination or modulate that parameter per-trig either while stacking notes on separate tracks or laying down one note per chord, per trig on the same track. but it is a modulation destination. i imagine there are a lot of different ways to get the result you want with a flexible sequencer like elektron’s and the poly fm engine of the digitone.

analog 4 probably does this pretty easily now that i think about it. i dont know exactly how their waveforms work though

You can do this on the Prophet Rev2 by mapping OSC source to a gated sequencer output lane, I believe. The gated sequencer is an incredibly powerful tool for this. You might also be able to use S/H on the parameter as a modulation destination.

This is the concept behind Korg Wavestate/Wavestation. The iOS version is affordable and a ton of fun.

I haven’t tried this, but on the Kijimi you can modulate wave shape morphing with LFOs, and you can sync the LFOs to incoming MIDI. As long as you were playing / sequencing at a steady rate you could sync up such that it was a different shape per step.

(Also worth noting that the wave shape morphing is smooth, so you’d get some of that transition while the envelope is open, I think unavoidably.)
