There was just a MiniRig update that promises to improve pairing issues. So far Iā€™ve had better luck pairing stereo with this update.

Are you using iOS? I havenā€™t been able to use the MINIRIG app or Updater app since iOS13 was released.

Pretty poor form from MINIRIG developers seeing as the iOS13 beta has been available since June. I love how the speakers sound but I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever used software as frustrating and buggy as the MINIRIG apps.

Hereā€™s the thing. I am using iOS. But it wonā€™t work from my iPhone only from my iPad. And I hear you on the app support. These speakers sound so great and the battery lasts so long - but so many hassles with apps and pairing.

As another data point, Iā€™ve had no problems on ios13 and the minirig app and update.

After much perseverance, I finally managed to get the speakers to show up in the app and was able to update them. Right now Iā€™m wishing I hadnā€™t though, as Iā€™ve now got a new issue with stereo. The left speaker intermittently drops out causing a kind of pan effect and volume drop before it kicks back in. Is this happening with you guys too?

They also released an iOS update for the app today, which has completely broken the settings page :man_facepalming:t2:

I will sometimes get the drop out on one side that you describe not long after pairing, but generally theyā€™ve been pretty solid once I get them going. By left do you mean the primary speaker (i.e. the one thatā€™s paired with your music source)? The one I get drop outs on is not the one paired with my music source.

Iā€™m considering a cheap and lightweight speaker to use with norns when traveling. So - it should have an AUX input. Size/weight is probably a bit more important than quality overall.

Thereā€™s a few $20-40 units on amazon which seem like cheap enough to try:

Amazon Basics Portable Wireless Speaker
Sony XB-10 or XB-12

any opinions on these el cheapo options?

Iā€™ve been using the Anker Soundcore for quite awhile. Sound is good for the size and the battery life is quite unbelievable.

I donā€™t know about the ones mentioned. I bought a JBL Go 2. Itā€™s cheap, small, very portable, ā€œweather proofā€, aux-in and sounds reasonably good for what it is. Perfect for me to hook up my Op-1, or phone when travelling etc. I didnā€™t really make any research before the purchase. Bonus: I plan to use it as a ā€œgrotboxā€ mono monitor when mixing.

Thinking of getting the improved Minirig Mini2 for a bedroom or office set up. Low level listening only. Would you agree im ok with Mini2 or is the Minirig 3 a better option?

Another option to consider is the Ikea Frekvens with the optional Braunit battery pack. (It seems opinions on this are a bit more negative than I thought)

I recommend the normal size jambox by jawbone, 2nd hand for cheap. it has a boombox style sound, good frequency range. not very even, the mids distort but pleasantly it has character. distortion is going to happen with volume on the speakers of this size, this one sounds good slightly distorted.

I have just bought a Marshall Stockwell II Bluetooth speaker, and Iā€™m really liking it. One question I canā€™t find the answer to though, is when I connect it to my iPad what volume should I set the iPad to. Iā€™m assuming that as it is streaming over Bluetooth 5.0 the signal is being sent digitally, so I should set the iPadā€™s volume to 100%, and set the speakers volume to taste. Is this right? If I was connecting via the 3.5mm aux input, itā€™s analog, so Iā€™d set the iPadā€™s volume to about 70%, but Iā€™m unsure how the Bluetooth 5.0 spec deals with source volume.

After reading a ton of reviews I ordered 2x Anker Soundcore 2s. These seemed like a good balance of quality and cost. Initial tests listening to music were encouraging, but as soon as I tried to make music through them it all came crashing down ā€“ even using aux input there is definite latency on the signal. Never saw that coming.

Theyā€™re currently on their way back to where they came from.

sorry I didnā€™t get back to you on the previous ask - I got an Anker Soundcore Mini, which has worked just fine for my limited needs (small portable speaker to demo stuff, or just testing outputs, along with setting up BT audio on Raspi)

Bummer the Soundcore 2s didnā€™t work out. Iā€™ve not heard latency on the Mini (using aux input), but Iā€™ve also not been doing anything that might expose that.

Iā€™ve not noticed latency on the Mini with Aux. Bluetooth is obviously a different story.
