very respectfully, and I do share your perspective that consumer culture is toxic, but:
a) I wouldn’t consider any of the gear used to be super out of the ordinary
b) it is a mixer that needs audio signals, so by definition you need other gear to test it, and newly received gear is more likely to be floating around outside of a larger setup
c) you can use this with what you already have and not have to buy one single extra thing
d) I don’t feel like this is a great reason to remove from consideration a piece of gear that may meet your needs
e) what are we doing here in this thread, discussing the merits of upcoming consumer goods, if not enabling consumerism?

Tags like “influencer” obscure the fact that these are ultimately freelancer video producers being paid (likely not a ton, or compensated in barter) to put in a lot of time producing really thorough and informative videos about products that are very difficult to try before purchase.

this isn’t They Live here, or a celebrity shilling for a product they obviously don’t use. it’s a friendly synth nerd showing you the possibilities of gear he is generally genuinely excited about.

I think the concern is that synthfluencers (:face_vomiting:) are responsible for the Amazing Discoveries of gear videos. Could be mistaken, but I don’t think the gripe, as such, was with “pre-release hype.”

That said, we have an older thread for that discussion (which was also linked above).

You’re almost certainly right about all these points (particularly in questioning what I’m doing in this thread grumbling about this stuff).

I get there’s nothing inherently terrible happening, just standard synth-influencer practice. I would’ve just liked to see this in a more “real-world” set-up, rather than feeling several other brand-new products were being demonstrated at me alongside it is all.

I want to say I saw someone link this on here a while back but a quick search didn’t turn it up. Just saw the Erae Touch on Kickstarter:

Looks like a “super ROLI”, which, for me, isn’t a good jumping off point…

I do like the looks of being able to (properly?) play it with sticks and having it be configurable. It’s unclear what the communication spec is on that Kickstarter page, or if you will have decoupled LED feedback ala the Novation stuff via sysex. That was one of the most disappointing things with the ROLI blocks. Even with having a solidly-made Max package behind it, you couldn’t (easily) decouple feedback from control, which is a necessity/no-brainer.

Given their marketing and examples, I don’t hold out much hope for OSC or individually addressable LEDs or anything, but would be good to know one way or another.

Erae touch kickstarter launched this morning and they had a live Q&A show where I asked several questions. Answers were good:

  • Access to raw data is via SysEx, and it seems they’ll share the format
  • You can drum on it with sticks, by design: It is a metal plate, the sensors, and a thick 6mm silicon cover. It isn’t glued, only screwed together – so the silicon cover could be replaced if it tears… but they don’t expect it to damage for years by drum sticks, though pitting after continued use (like a drum head) might happen
  • The standard drum pad gives you Note + 2 CCs (x/y) – and you can choose how many you want on the device (demos show 2x4, but you can have more or fewer)
  • I asked about pad isolation and cross-talk - so the drummer did a live demo: practically zero!
  • They will have a non-FB forum
  • Setup & layout designer software runs on Linux / Mac OS / Windows
  • MSP objects in the works

That is all super promising info!

Glad you were on there asking these kinds of questions.

The price point is too high (for me) to just get a whim, so I’ll definitely keep my eyes peeled for more demos and for when it comes out.

how much more do you have to pledge to get a version w/o the logo right in the middle?

They announced almost immediately this morning that the logo will be moved to the side or removed entirely. Apparently that was like the first bazillion questions.

yeah it was super distracting

lol yeah, real peculiar choice that.

Was the Q&A on FB? Is there a way/place to rewatch it somewhere?

this fri 16th Oct is the 20,000th anniversary of the formation of Cementimental. Going to try and release something. In a different parallel universe I’m having some amazing all-day noise fest :-/

I wonder how short the delay can go on this… Aalto’s ability to do waveguide synthesis with super short delays is one of my favorite things about it

I had a related response to the launch of the Subharmonicon. After the awesome DFAM video launch which featured artists talking about their art and process while using the gear, seeing the Subharmonicon launch with a zillion youtube bros unpacking videos felt gross. If I hadn’t bought one before seeing the campaign roll out I don’t think I would have.

Q&A was on both FB and Instagram. Links:

Drummer starts playing at about 42 min. in… though many of my questions were answered earlier.

It’s pretty convincing (definitely a bit massive as expected though), and the price is ok granted it can deliver on its promises and build quality.

Reading through everything in more detail, I can say I’m a bit more hyped now. Still not “pre-order a random expensive product off Kickstarter”-hyped, but definitely “maybe buy one the moment they become available and reviews say they aren’t garbage”-hyped.

I wish this was the only type of hype that we could have anymore.

It does feel a bit like the promise of the Roli Block in a premium full scale format doesn’t it?

Yeah, which is what gives me reservations given how those turned out, hehe.

I pledged. It looks fantastic. We need another dozen this week.
