I agree, the similarity to the Lyra, in terms of the soul of the instrument, is pretty minimal. They do both appeal to certain types of noisy ambient musicians and they probably have one well-known component in common, but that’s it.

There was one time on one of the videos when I thought “that does sound like something I did with the Lyra”… and then I remembered that particular piece of mine leaned heavily on Valhalla Delay

If one wanted to list similarities and differences between the instruments, the differences column would be longer and more significant I think.

(One of them’s for communicating with whales, the other for doing witchcraft. Or I guess, alchemy.)

I suspect the “tone control” is a low pass within the feedback path so it “absorbs” the feedback and it dies down, but might be a combination of functions that result in a dampening of the circuit like the Erbe-Verb which also has that parameter.

I can get some crazy stuff happening on my Medusa. Run it through a Poly Digit and Microcosm and you’ll be leaving the planet before you know it.

Hmmm, there’s already the main low pass filter in the delay feedback loop, so I’m thinking absorb is outside of that loop, but not sure exactly where. It certainly rolls off the high end when the knob is ccw.

All of this talk about dirty delays and modular synths made me want to experiment a bit with the vanilla VCV delays and the low pass gates and chaotic LFOs that are part of our next set of Magus Instrumentalis modules so I made this and was quite happy with it. Really looking forward to getting this set out to people in March. Faceplates here are just for prototyping:

Man I had finally talked myself out of wanting this but I’m sold all over again. I really don’t want to buy a korg hardware soft synth but this one really seems like it can do some unheard of things. Wouldn’t get old for a while at least

This sounds great :sparkles:… I really need to check out VCV.

I’m just glad (my wallet even more so :joy:) Make Noise have released something I don’t want for once. As with all Make Noise kit it is beautiful though, and a joy to use I imagine.

The idea of using a random LFO to modulate VCA/amplitude (looks like something along those lines is happening on Strega), along the lines of tape ‘drop outs’ is something I’ve never played around with… happy to use Strega as source of inspiration for my own gear.

Hey, thanks! You should check out VCV, no need to buy anything (but thank you if you do!), I was a user long before I started developing (I used it in… I think alpha?). It’s not eurorack, you don’t get the same feeling are turning knobs, but it really is close. It’s similar to kyma in that you really can think in audio rate just like modular. If nothing else, having free access to the sounds of the mutable modules I can’t afford (via the audible instruments set) is an absolute joy, I’ve used it on records, etc.

I keep going back and forth on Strega. I actually really like the design, but I’m probably going to hold off for now. I do really think the 0-series is awesome, and all three of these plus an effects unit would be an ideal alternate/cheaper shared system.

this sounds fantastic, look forward to checking out these modules when they’re released

Thank you! It’s been so much easier to demo this than our previous modules which were control-centered. We have some cool utilities in this new set as well, such as a dual universal slope generator-inspired module that can run at audio rate and has sample-and-hold capabilities, and a simulated Vactrol that will essentially turn any filter you have into a pingable low pass gate. I’m very bad at keeping secrets, so let’s just say it’s going to be really fun to put this tech into a polysynth, eventually

I don’t have either but now I want to use a Strega and Norns together to create some sort of 0-Racle.

haha after watching the Strega announcement I attempted to get Ableton to “calibrate” to Lyras cv input using the cv instrument tool. It was NOT having a bar of it.

Has anyone been able to ascertain a release date for the ADDAC granular offering?

The ADDAC site says late March in the description on the product page. That’s as specific as I’ve been able to find. Eagerly awaiting to hear that thing in action.

I emailed ADDAC and was told a rundown video would be released in a couple weeks. I’m excited to see that monster in action.

Filipe said “late March” in two separate emails to me–both when I asked for an invoice a week ago and this morning when he sent my receipt after I ordered over the weekend. So, no date set in stone for late March yet.
