Another bump in power requirements (now a hefty 5V/5A, up from 5V/3A for the 4); sounds like active cooling is pretty much required now. Interesting they’re really doubling down on machine vision (pun intended) with dual camera support. On the nicer side of QoL, good to see a power switch and RTC onboard finally.

So who’s gonna be the first to try with a Norns shield when these arrive next month?

Hehe, I was actually thinking about upgrading mine (not exactly a Norns shield though), but I’m wondering if the RPI 5 might be a bit too powerful for this task. The heat generated by the device concerns me a bit. Enclosed it in a small case, I’m not sure. I would need to reconsider the overall design to include the active cooler.

That being said, if it becomes the only RPI available from retailers, we’ll have to adapt…

4gb or 8gb for Norns ? There’s only a 20€ difference

Yeah, it’s a tricky question. While the extra speed may be nice for some norns scripts (personally thinking of graintopia), I would still prefer to have a completely silent device. When I put together my Shield I specifically chose to reuse a RPi3, over a new RPi4.

(Folks also note some audio interference with RPi4; I wonder if this will be worse again with the great power requirements of the RPi5).

Not anytime soon. The CM 3s will be available for at least 2 more years. CM 4 for 4 more years and CM 4S for 7. Source: Raspberry Pi | endoflife.date

unfortunately rpi has ignored my requests for info on the CM4S— i guess by “industrial customers” they actually just mean samsung etc.

(If that data is correct, interesting that the non-compute 3B and 4B series will all be EoL at the same time.)

With a bit of luck, the other Raspberry will be back in stock starting from late October. (Farnell: 27 weeks delay for RPI 3B+, RPI 4 4gb 30/12, but there are some RPI4 in stock already, I don’t know which one is recommended for Shield ).

Note: From the videos I’ve seen, the active cooler does make a bit of noise. I could live with that but there are many features I don’t need for a headless Norns on this board.

For folks who are wanting to build a shield but can only find a RPi4, I’d recommend keeping an eye on @okyeron’s next batch release of the shieldxl kits. I’m using a RPi4 with mine and it’s been as silent as an og Norns.

In my view for the current era shouldn’t product revisions and upgrades attempt to keep to previous power requirements or less? Surely even with the RPi5 there are efficiencies that could have been made.

I see the same in eurorack too, on the most part work on efficent power consumption is disregarded as most modern power supplies can power them…
I have a 18U studio case that consumes the same amount of power as a 6U travel case…

Fascinating WIP oscillator interface from Unknown Devices

Capacitive touch ring reminds me of early iPods, plus a fun UI that seems provide useful visualization of the engine.

This looks fun, but as a hardware module, I don’t yet understand why it’s an oscillator as opposed to a pitch and mod source. For that matter, I’m not sure I understand why it’s hardware at all, as opposed to an iPad app or DAW plugin. In the video, the developer alludes to its potential as a DSP and UI platform to host various distinct programs, but then discounts that, and the hardware is clearly being developed with one UX in mind, not as a generic host. I love that Eurorack inspires people to do crazy stuff, but this will be a large, expensive module. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m with you, Martin. There are some very interesting ideas here, but to make it hardware seems like an exercise in technovanity. But with that said, there are no great heights that are reached without first scaling lower heights.

Considering they dumped the formfactor of the CM3 (for the 4) and have swapped the hardware locations from pi3->pi4 and the back to the original positions from pi4->pi5 (ethernet/usb have done a dance as a of late), “consistency” is not a big concern for them.

If only consistency made surveillance devices, they would be more interested…

I think this may be a result of the Daisy Seed mcu they’er using. It has ac-coupled stereo audio in and out. (And they’re likely using a second stereo codec to get quad audio i/o)

They should get in touch with Electro-Smith, as the Daisy Seed2 DFM (used in NE and Modbap modules, along others) can be made to have dc-coupled outputs. (And you can do the same with a second external codec as well)

Because, yeah… I like some of the stuff this module does, but I think I’d want to bring my own voice.

Interestingly, in some of Unknown’s demos they have Electro-Smith stuff racked, so its plausible they might be already in contact?
