I heard it here first:

[mod note: moved this from its own thread to the hype thread.]

also, like, to be honest, when it is no longer pre-release, i really hope that whoever starts the Silhouette thread does a better job of writing a top post for it? like, the last new Mannequins-only module was in what 2018? (not counting Crow, i mean) surely we can write a better invitation to discussion; Trent’s work deserves it.

Since Silhouette is being discussed again and I’ve read the manual enough times to have a slightly better idea

  1. Anyone know how stereo field for the background is created? I’d like to assume the degree of panning has something to do with the degree of distance from the spotlight input, but maybe this is an errant assumption.

  2. Seems like a really unique way to approach dub mixing for beat-centric music.

With traditional send-return paradigm, the effects are slathered on top of the main mix, but Silhouette seems to encourage leaving a “dry” sound behind when you want to do something different, whether it be a feedback’d internal delay/smear verb, or an externally effected signal.

Excited to see how disruptions, instead of heavy layering, can change the end result of a composition. At least that’s how I’m thinking about it, any counterpoint?

I’m also not certain, but I had assumed/inferred it was related to position/angle more than distance, if that distinction makes sense?

Like, let’s number the inputs 1-6 starting from the top and going clockwise around. If SPOT is centered on 4 (bottom), then input 1 would be center, 2 and 3 would be panned right, and 5 and 6 would be panned left. If SPOT was centered on 6, then 1 and 2 would be left, 3 would be center, and 4 and 5 would be right. Like SPOT is controlling the “camera”, and inputs are positioned where they would be in that “shot”:thinking:

If a BBD delay is involved, I could imagine that the Haas effect is used here, by adding an ever so slight delay on one stereo channel …

i’m casting my vote for you to write the top post when its time! would love to hear the passion for the work over the years connected to the new module…

Almost certainly for the spotlight channel, and you can use “focus” for stereo separation between light and shadow

But I don’t think these latter diagrams fully clarify how the background inputs are panned around

Maybe some suggestions would be helpful here if whichever of the Silhouette posts you move don’t meet the standard here.

happy to make suggestions when the time comes!—to be crystal clear, the reason i moved the post is because the module is pre-release

OK, this is looking seriously good:

Strange-R: I missed this announcement. But scratching my head.

This looks fascinating, but there has so much complexity. A badge it wears with honor.

I’m with you. Where is the polyphony? Why harmonic structures but no harmony?
(Allen Strange’s text from which the module takes its name, doesn’t deal with polyphony, which makes sense given the limits of modular synthesis of the era.)

It says it’s got “chiptune pseudopolyphony”. I’m not sure what that is - arpeggio? why stop there?

from the demos so far, i really love the little hexagon window with visual feedback… don’t know why, but its so simple and yet somehow fun and very compelling

It reminds me of the little window on Cocoquantus which visualises the quantussy section, and that one is also very satisfying.

Wondering how 6 sisters as input (or feedback?) will sound?

okay… Silhouette has me really excited about using it with a particular module that I don’t use a lot anymore: Make Noise Telharmonic.

I am indeed excited about Silhouette and its hexagon-inclusive design :smirk:

And on December 30 @8am PST we will be competitors in getting a Silhouette.

Do we agree that it’s in about 21 hours from now, Paris/Berlin time ?
I’m always so bad dealing with time difference !

Good luck to all who want one – I’m happy for Trent that his Silhouette generates so much interest!
