thank you very much. very nice to know i’ts not just me haha. it really would be a dream setup to have norns mlr and earthsea togeheter.

As a slight side step to this, what is the best way to change over from say ansible, earthsea and norns, without the switch module?

Recording in MLR then changing to modular and back, the grid flashes as I plug it back into norns but then doesn’t light up or respond until I re-launch MLR, meaning I have to start again.

I don’t use external power for my grid.

Any thoughts/workarounds appreciated!

hot-swapping should just work with both modules and norns. what grid are you using and which norns version?

Using grayscale grid, purchased band new from monome in (I think) May last year, and latest software version of norns.

sorry for bumping an old topic but I’m having some problems using switch with meadowphysics and norns and probably is not worth creating a new topic.

I’m using switch to swap my grid between meadowphysics and norns (norns is sending cv/gate to crow).
sometimes when switching from norns to meadowphysics, norns just freezes. it becomes completely unresponsive, I have to shut it down with the reset button. this happens several times a day.

I have norns, crow and meadowphysics with the latest updates/firmware and I have one of the new grids. this is not specific to a norns script.

if I swap the usb cable from meadowphysics to norns, this does not happen, it only happens using switch and it also happens without using crow.
so, probably a switch issue?..
does anyone have a similar situation? how can this be solved?

we noticed a bug pop up recently that possibly crashes norns when you disconnect a usb device.

hoping to have it fixed very soon, apologies for the trouble. norns is the issue, not switch.

thanks for the info @tehn!
a fix would be great, I have a gig this friday and this is kind of problematic, hope the fix becomes available before friday

this is a complex issue and i am sorry to suggest that i would recommend a workaround for friday. :grimacing:

hopefully we can fix it, but last time we saw this sort of issue it ended up being a rabbit hole.

oh  ok.

this got me confused, thought it was a simple fix
I have to find a workaround then  good luck with that rabbit hole!

Do you know how to connect over serial or SSH?
It would be useful if we could determine if just some processes died or the whole system and then check if we can fine some info about why in the logs.

yes I know how to connect via SSH, but I don’t know how to view or get you the logs. with your guidance I can try it.

which grid edition and norns (2018/2019, shield, fates) are you using?

having a hard time replicating the grid unplug bug, but the midi unplug bug i can replicate so far

factory norns, first generation and latest grid, don’t know the year exactly.

which firmware version are you running? I had a strange issue a while back that seemed to be fixed during an update. The grid, if unplugged would restart norns if I didn’t use the far right (closest to the edge) USB port.

I’ll test different usb ports to see if problem persists and report back.

edit: @Jonny it happens on every USB port, even without crow or wi-fi thing connected to norns, just using grid and switch.

edit: thank you so much @tehn and @ngwese for the fast fix! :raised_hands:  latest norns update solved the crashing problem
amazing and fast work guys!

sorry to bump this y’all but did a past norns update make the monome switch suitable? would love to use switch to change between norns/ansible!!

what is the symptom? which devices, etc?

@tehn, I dont own one currently. Just saw a used one pop up and was curious how stable hotswapping has been recently before I grab it!

Edit: Above it looks like @sno had noticed that a norns update in January helped some of the past issues?

i believe it should be ok. keep in mind that arcs do not hotswap due to a firmware issue… though i haven’t looked back at this forever, as nobody has brought it up (?)

Yeah, I’m not sure if its still an issue. I’d be doing it with a 128 Varibright between ansible & norns. Maybe i’ll just give it a shot and give a bug report if there are any issues.
