Hi everyone!

I’m currently trying to make panels for RIP for the group buy. I have illustrator files from the RIP github, but the maker I found requires dxf files. I’ve been trying to make it work for a while but it’s really out of my comfort zone and I’m struggling with the tools.

So, I have 2 questions:

anyone know how to get clean dxf files from an illustrator file?
anyone know a eurorack panel maker that can work from illustrator files (in EU) ?

There’s Schaeffer which has their Front Panel Designer software. Not sure if that can import illustrator files though.

Norns: help

Plugged the TRS outputs of my Intellijel case into Norns and I’m getting a lot of noise (however, plugging my phone in via a stereo 1/8 to dual mono 1/4 is fine). Did I miss something obvious re. Norns’ preferred input levels/sources?

Norns: help

inputs are standard line level. TRS should work, ring is impedance matched to ground (“fake balanced”).

Would this make sense as to why I need to pull the cables from my intellijel case out a little bit on the norns side like this?

To get the RIP output to perform well with Norns inputs, I have one of the sends on my mixer going to the Norns and give the RIP some gain on the mixer preamp until the levels are nice.

If I keep those cables pulled out just a little bit the levels are as expected (leveled down from hot modular signals a bit but not crazy). Plugged fully in it’s going very close to silent.

I found that when I tried to use balanced cables from my DIY RIP to Digitakt, i had the same issue - it only worked when I used a standard TS cable. I spent ages trying to work out if I’d built it incorrectly, but after testing a TRS cable into a monitor I knew had balanced inputs and confirmed it worked, I assume it was.

I’m guessing pulling your (TRS?) cable is shorting the ring and shield. Have you tried a TS cable?

If anyone can explain why RIP doesn’t play nice using a TRS cable into an unbalanced input, I’d be very interested!!

It has bummed me out that @sonoCircuit’s EXI[S]T is so hard to place inside an Intellijel Palette case without a blank panel. It would be great if there was another smaller transformer one could use, which you also could drive with DC. I don’t know a lot about transformers and strugle to find good resources, seems like every article and video is about tri-phase delta and Y transformers. The only thing I found out is that it needs to have a ~12 : 1 turns ratio and that should be made for audio applications.

First I’m going to link the CineMag CM-DBX, which is the one orginally used. It has a diameter 28.8mm and a height of max 22.7mm from the top of the pcb and up. The Palette case has a module depth of 45.5mm, and that leaves not much space for a module above it. The goal of this project is enough space for a 25 mm deep module.

After looking at some specs, I wonder if it could be possible to use the Lundahl LL2913, which has a 1+1+1+1 : 37 turns ratio. If I understod it correctly, it could be wired to be 1 : 12.33. This one is called a Ribbon Microphone Transformer, and got a height of 14.5mm. I dont know if it’s possible to use a ribbon microphone transformer for this purpose.

They also have two Microphone Input Transformers / Line-box Transformers called LL1577 and LL1578 at 1 : 14 and 1 : 10. These got a height of 17mm. If the turns ratio is inside the “margin of error” for euro to line convertion, maybe these will be better?

I’m far out of my field right now, and would love to know if its even possible, other alternatives, how to look at transformer specs, everything that can help.

The Jensen clone is JT-DB-EPC. I don’t have numbers to confirm, but I remember them seeming pretty identical in sound / performance way back when (this was 4 years ago).

I saw these, but sadly they are to tall at 22.1mm from the pcb. I’ve also seen the OEP A187A10C, but it’s 25.5mm.

But there are some Jensens up on ebay I believe, but theyre like 89 bucks lol.

In regards to the panel, anyone can use my FPD file, I dont mind
But I do think Trent encourages that you design your own
