Hi, Natalia — I’ll send you an email now. Thanks!

This is a song from my homeland. I also dressed up in my ancestor’s clothing to do the video. I just made a video of a small part, since really the best take I did at home, and the video was taken outside.

Basically I don’t play any instruments, but everyone can sing (well kind of) so I decided to sing a traditional folk song. I recorded it on my zoom recorder, no editing just the raw file.

… a bit more on this … what’s above was my initial reaction when I read the disquiet, basically I don’t play an instrument, so I should try singing. Anyway, sometimes at home I just start singing songs in a made up language, and it make my wife laugh (and kids cringe) so I thought I would try doing that. I tried a few times and finally got something I thought was reasonable (mostly because of the emotional expression … even if a bit on the silly side). I thought of it as someone pining for their homeland or a lost love, so I thought it would look cool to wear some of my dad’s clothes that I have. Then I thought well since I have long hair, I should be able to do something with that, then since the hat doesn’t cover my ears (and it’s cold outside here) I can use the hair to do that, then I thought braiding it to look like a beard would be suitably ridiculous.
On Sunday (when I’d already basically mentally committed to the singing), I thought I could do something like playing my push, or lemur on my ipad, but I would have to figure something out … maybe next time for that …

The prompt this week was filled with peril, live performance, multitasking and video! With so many things to manage at once it was hard to get anything right but it was very interesting. And frustrating. And time consuming. I have been trying to incorporate a more live approach with iOS but it has been a steep curve. A slightly simple attempt this week with Magellan and Nave triggered by a MIDI keyboard playing over a Patterning groove. All are routed through Audiobus, AB Remote and mixed through AUM, with Zero Reverb on the AUM mixing bus. Not outstanding musically but a start towards something bigger  The video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtaGar0EpZ8 was a lot more work from start to finish. Recorded on my phone and brought into iMovie where syncing proved to be near impossible. Once I did some quirky work arounds it came out OK, but man what a lesson in patience! I hope somebody enjoys it :-/

No planning with this one, just grabbed my ZoomH4N whilst on a break from the white lines, and started humming…

This is a minimal piece recorded in real time. I tapped a Mikrophonie to trigger random notes on Rene while in snake mode. Rene then triggered Rings, and the signal was sent to Clouds. I used the delay feedback from Clouds to keep time.

This was played on a Polysix, recorded on my iPhone. I only practiced it a few times and this is the last take.

I played the synth part at the start of the track - it’s just an FM wavetable with the wave index swept by an LFO in the new Synthmaster One, filter fully open, nothing else going on in the patch. I looped it over a simple drum beat, and noodled on the bass (Aria SB-ELT/RSZ, DI into the computer) for about 10-12 mins. Hit a couple of grooves, which I tried to play in time to the beat. Pulled out the workings-out and took the best bits of each phrase/riff, taking it down to the 3 mins. BPM is 120.

Performance wasn’t a single take (obviously!), so I didn’t really stick to the project brief. But when jamming out something with someone, it takes a while to work something out - you bounce off their stuff, and they bounce off you… This is the lopsided product of that process.

Here is my piece: https://soundcloud.com/plusch/up-in-the-air-disquiet0269

I composed this piece for this project, and played it on the piano. I hope someone can make something interesting with it.

Whew… just made it:

Hopefully, someone will be up to the metrical challenge of this one!

Update: SO I was crazy sick last night when I wrote and recorded that. Hence, no video. Here are some notes: First, I thought up the basic idea in the shower in the morning - and almost recorded me banging it out on the wet tile… but the battery in my H1 was dead… Later that evening, between dinner and kid story time, I set up some FM percussion synths on pads, and finger drummed out parts. Eventually writing out the score, and then many many takes to get it in one performance. I speed up a bit in the fast sections, but it should be followable.

I thought a lot about leaving space. I hope the work feels purposely incomplete: It has space to be filled metrically in spots (all the 12/8 sections, played as 4/4 are empty grids), space in instrumentation (there is nothing held, or strongly pitched), and space in frequency (lots of openness in the middle range.)

Metrical plan if you want to follow along:

This might be typical of my contribution to a Barkhausen track, which are usually performed as a duet.

We are looking for a percussionist, but the one hitch is that you’d have to live in New Zealand…

That Nord is sexy - what kind has the real drawbars?

I played your electric piano nord improv on top of my electro piano nord improv and it matched splendidly!

The Electro 4D and 5D have drawbars and waterfall semiweighted keys, rather than buttons and hammer-action. I have a 73-note 5D, because I’m that fickle beast: an organ player who also wants a decent piano. I am fine with the trade-off - it’s a nice action for Rhodes/Wurli and I can cope fine with it for acoustic pianos - but having drawbars and waterfalls makes Hammond much, much easier.

Hey Juntonians!
Marc, just posted a “duet” with Ya Wha? and was curious if you had considered an impromptu/prequel playlist for the duets popping up already? Like you don’t have enough to do…just curious. Here’s mine for everyones perusal: https://soundcloud.com/user-651760074/bare-metal-269

This track can be a duet with itself!

I accidentally opened a S.C. tab with this track in it about 30s. after I started the embedded player on this page. Didn’t realize for quite some time that I had two copies going, one delayed. It sounded great!
