I think it sounds a little more “classic vintage oscillator” than the NTO. It’s not as “raw electricity” like but also not a night and day difference. I can still easily pull that sound from the DSG/SSG if need be!

I was never a fan of the wave shaping on the NTO personally but I’m absolutely obsessed with it here.

I just found out that the top section of my 258’s is actually the “wave shapers” from the triple wave shaper.

You get this AND the sine to saw or sine to square shaping, both with CV control! I had no idea I’d be getting this function when I bought the panel, so it was a really pleasant surprise.

ESPECIALLY when I found out that you can run external audio into those wave shapers as well. Having the triple wave shaper character AND the triple wave mults under one hood is really something.

The amount of little details Charlie has tucked into this single panel is just astonishing. I’m completely floored :drooling_face:

I heard people say the that NTO is pretty clean sounding, probably much less non linearities than a 258. I’m loving the tones i’m getting from my DUSG, SSG and pinged VCFQ, but I still can’t get the tracking to be precise more than about 2 octaves, which isnt terrible, but sometimes it’s a little bit more of a pain to dial in. I still have one foot in euro, I was thinking of picking up another vco to process with Serge stuff, perhaps a Sputnik Oscillator (258 clone) or maybe even a Verbos Foubdation Oscillator, the demos of it sound pretty raw.

I did also see this module by Klavis called Caltrans, which helps extend the tracking of vcos, so that could also be a solution.

Hello! Here’s an idea for a patch that sounds like birds. It’s a complex feedback patch between the VCFQ, TWS, NCOM and DUSG. Clouds is also playing an important role in creating the different pitches of the bird sounds from the STEP OUT output of NCOM. Erbe-Verb is slowly coming in creating a virtual space for all the birds to “sing” into.

I have RS NTO in euro. It’s clean osc but it shines with wave multipliers for sines and triangles, and saw with vcfq and other filters. In comparison I only have Moog 901/921 clones they sound different (more full) but I always put them through c3p mixer which get some color.

NTO is really good with animation and where I love Serge modules. Some basic things like cv variable output can add a lot to the sound palette if you put a zadar complex envelope. I have a great bassline with it. Other modulation is also very usable (thanks for built in attenuators/verters.

Previously I have had Furthrrr Gen which was dirtier but also shines with timbre section. What I really want is a RS left part of Donks which consists 2 LPG and Buchla style timbre section. It gives some extra to NTO

I actually have the Donks module in 4u. TBH its got some flaws. The vactrols ring really long, like compared to the Easel I used to have. Also the Timbre section doesn’t have the range that my Easel had. I’ve tried a bunch to calibrate it to no avail, and frankly it sounds different than the Easel, it almost distorts like a guitar pedal. Which can be cool, but it’s not the same. Also I don’t think the circuit was adjusted for Serge voltages, it doesn’t fully open with the DUSG, but it actually does with euro stuff, especially with dynamic gate output on the 0-Ctrl. But having a cross fader between the two gate channels and the stereo mixer on the other side makes up for it. If I want a little Buchla flair it’s nice, otherwise I just run it like a four channel mixer.

I’d go with the 2M2. Not only is that the value in Ken’s schematic, but in all of my research, he was pretty great about updating even the smallest of details. You could always experiment by trying each value. See which of them sounds/functions best… add a switch and use them both!

They’re probably my favorite oscillator; indeed, all of my VCOs are J3RK/Stroh Modular, and half of them are based on the 258.

Can anyone reccomend any substitute ICs for the CA3080/3086’s in the 73-75 kit? Hoping to do rock an all tayda order but if it’s not possible I’ll try to snoop out something reasonable on ebay

I think Thonk carries the CA3080 and IIRC there’s the clone AS3080 from there (or via Erica Synths, in US I think synthcube carries CA3080). I think CA3046 (or AS3046) can be a replacement for CA3086.

my communication with patchpoint has been pretty abysmal as well. they’ve had one of my 4U modules in for repair for close to a year now with no communication as to when it will be repaired, why its taking so long, and as of last communication I even told them to just send it back to me, and I haven’t been able to get a response back. pretty disappointed because prior to this I’d had pretty good interactions with them…

really wish there was a reliable shop that was willing to carry the 4u Serge torch here in the states :frowning:

I haven’t gotten an answer to my inquiry from Patch Point either. It’s very disappointing, I’ve been there in person once and it was maybe the most pleasant experience I’ve had in a music store, and I’m so happy such a shop exists, so I really hope nothing too bad has happened and that everything will be sorted out.
