I just received a used set of (8) 4x4’s in two boats this morning and unfortunately I’m having an issue: the Saw output jack of the NTO seems like it’s come loose. The first time I plugged in a cable, I got silence and the second it worked until the boat wobbled a bit, so I’m fairly confident that jack just needs to be re-soldered (right?). However, I lack access to/skills for an iron, so I can’t take care of it immediately. So, for the time being, can I continue to use that boat/NTO or is there the potential to break things further by using it?

Sounds like that’s the issue. The banana jack itself should not wobble. They’re usually soldered to a wire like this which could snap if the jack is loose:

Thanks Johnny- sorry if I was unclear, but the boat itself wobbled, not the jack. I did unscrew the panel and had a look- it (the blue jack) doesn’t seem quite as clean as your picture, but really not that bad?

Might not be the jack, but the connectors of the 2 pcbs. Sorry, but that soldering looks a little sloppy – you shouldn’t have blobs that big when solder flows well. (I know you didn’t solder it)

Huh. The seller said it was from Patch Point, so I thought it’d be better assembled (I just know enough to know it doesn’t look great).

The rest of the outputs are working though, so would the PCB connectors still be an issue? I’ll make sure they look ok regardless and give it another go.

EDIT 2: Eh, that worked for a little bit. Now it’s back to acting up if I look at it the wrong way. (sigh)

Recently I got a bit inspired by Surgeon’s minimal setups and decided to patch the Serge into a kind of techno groovebox and record some rough tracks super quick!

These are all one-takes with the Serge panel as the only sound source, patched for two connected synth voices, a drum and a cymbal/noise sound. Cirklon sequencing, Lexicon PCM81, Oto BIM and BOUM (too much BOUM :wink: ) for effects.

Both the blue and white jack look looser than they should be, those nuts should be fastened tight to the panel. If you’re comfortable doing so, try listening to a signal output from that module while gently squeezing/jiggling that area of the PCB where the connectors are. If you can recognize a clear relationship between your movement and any interruptions in sound it probably just has to be reflowed/resoldered which isn’t difficult if you can find someone with basic soldering skills.

Thanks! The nuts did look off to me and I did a quick hand tighten- will go back in and do it properly. If that doesn’t work, I at least live in a city where finding someone to repair it shouldn’t be too hard.

This is outstanding (and also not helping quash the desire for La Bestia II)! Awesome work. On Hydroplanes, I kept thinking “where’s that big kick?” and then, boom, you deliver!

The arp / bassline on Signify is giving me flashbacks to the late 90’s rave days. Dare I say it’s almost 303 territory.

@cold_fashioned I am certainly not above making Serge 303-alike basslines for many hours…

@gnome666 The patch is the one shown in the photo above, although I didn’t have one of the dual slopes in for some of the tracks. Basically it’s NTO + wave folder and a slope generator as oscillators for two voices, both sharing the VCFS. Sometimes FM or AM between the voices which is a favorite of mine. VCFQ pinging and low-passed noise for the percussion.

Yep, all sequencing from the Cirklon. There are lots of mixer options on La Bestia - two actual mixers, VCFS, some of the wave mults have two inputs…

My Serge DIY build is a ways away from actualization, but I’ve been refining layout and physical constraints so I can start to collect materials for the hardware / panel / case. I think I’ve actually finalized the layout and jack color scheme; still not sure on the panel & knob colors, still need to figure out how explicit I want to be with labeling…

Looking for some tips; recently aquired an Edelweiss I and was looking for tips as to how people have/would use the gate sequencer. not my panel, but pics below…

The simplest thing I can think of for the gate sequencer is to set your sequence length by feeding the last stage back into the reset input. From there, I would clock it either with something predictable like a slope or the random/ssg.
