This is clever - I like it!

I miss them most where they really count, like on the Stereo Mixer or multipliers. I’ve seen some (Not Serge) designs in euro and 5u - and maybe they’re not possible with banana jacks - where the pot for an input acts as an offset when nothing is plugged in, and as an attenuator when something is. Switching like that is another benefit of TS cable patching, for sure.

anyone know of builders preferably in the US who build the RS Serge panels? I know LW does their own panels and custom stuff.

You can order them built from Random Source. Not sure if there’d be a big difference finding someone to put them together for you. From what I understand part of the build is already done anyways (smd parts).

most of the r**s stuff is preloaded with most of the components. Very simple to diy.

thanks for the responses. ugh. I’m really struggling wether or not to take the plunge. Especially since I have euro versions of all the RS Serge stuff and a bunch of tip-top audio stackables. I’ve read post after post here and elsewhere by proponents who all say that its just a different feel/patch experience with bananas and the 4U format, which my logical side says shouldn’t really make sense. But then again, I read the same arguments about ditching vst’s and getting into Eurorack before I made the switch, which I also tried to resist with the stupid logic of “whats the difference between virtual patch cables and the real thing”. Obviously, I made the switch to eurorack even though I was hesitant about the financial investment, and never regret doing so.

anyway. i’m not sure what response I’m trying to fish for but oh well. just a cry for help  :money_with_wings::money_with_wings::money_with_wings::money_with_wings:

the overall experience working with 3U / 4U is different, but not that dramatic like VST / eurorack. I was in the same situation, having all the serge stuff in eurorack and then moved to 4U. I still have the ResEQ and VCM as eurorack waiting for the transition.
If you can try out the feel with a 4U system, that would make it easy. If not and that may sound a bit silly, just buy a 1-2 banana patch cords (Pomona 4mm), because this and space is the most different. Sound is exactly the same in 3U / 4 U
In practis, I have a 3U system and a Serge system…beside of a micro tuning quantizer, i hardly never patch the two systems together.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding… both of those have attenuators on the CV inputs.

Yeah, this isn’t possible with Banana jacks in my understanding… it requires a switching jack. It’s also sort of against the Serge paradigm … you could easily patch-program things to work like that if you want. Same with the cycle switches on the euro versions… it’s very un-Serge and really only there because you can use a shorting bar to self patch 3.5mm DUSG …

You should switch if you want to have the limitation of the format. With euro, swapping modules can be endless. This is at least one of the reasons I’ve considered selling off the rest of my euro stuff.

Additionally, Serge can be very DIY friendly if you go the CGS/Elby/73-75 route.

In my experience, the mixer channels’ audio pots behave more like offsets than attenuators; it’s very difficult then to dial in subtle modulation via CV. I’m guessing that’s why they overload so easily when you modulate with a slope, etc.

As for patch-programming with banana jacks, sure, that’s the 4u Serge way. I’m not sure if you’re implying by extension that R*S and other Euro adaptations of Serge are in some ways less Serge, but I just appreciate them for having perks that my own gear lacks. I like the mental exercises and problem-solving that 4u Serge encourages, but hey, sometimes people just want a switch for something (looking at you, Creature v1 and Gator!) or some additional controls, a la CV attenuation on WaveMults, which appears to be included on some LW panels.

Shouldn’t the CV attenuators should allow you to reduce the amount of CV coming in?

Have you checked the calibration? Mine doesn’t overload that easily, and gives me lots of range for both gain and CV attenuation…

That’s a fair question; both Bestia II and Donks do this, but they’re both on my tech’s workbench, so I may as well call attention to it. Thanks for the nudge!

compositions for two-panel Serge system recorded for CO-DEPENDENT

two days later after publication I had to sell my entire system (and thus all of the electronic equipment I owned), but hopefully I’ll be back in Sergeville eventually. thanks to everyone here on this subthread that helped me with my dumb questions early on—was very encouraging and valuable. I’d hate to appear dogmatic but I’m having a hard time imagining myself using any other system than Serge…

Great patches! #4 is going deep into the uncanny valley.

Success! First kinda-DIY module completed. The R*S Euro-VCM has most everything done in SMT, but there is enough sourcing and soldering to feel like I made an honest effort. First new module in at least sixteen months and it’s a total winner. Apparently you can even use it as a wavefolder too? I just keep self-patching it into total feedback bliss. Can’t seem to break it. It’s amazing. VCFQ is next!

Congrats! Essential Serge module there. This link will help continue the mind blowing fun

quick question to those 4u Serge folks out there. How do you have them setup on your desk/workspace? I have 2 full panel boats incoming and would prefer to not have them flat on the table. I have the makenoise steel eurorack stand, so hopefully I will be ableto set them one on the other and rest it on the eurorack stand. I’ve seen many pics of nice wooden end cheek serge setups, but am wondering about anyone who has a more mobile solution?

The Hordijk 5u systems come with a sort of guitar type stand, and are very secure, but probably quite a bit heavier than two Serge boats would be, which may make that solution work better on a bigger set up.

I used to have my two boats with cheeks. Pretty portable and a more useful (imho) playing angle:

I have the 2 panel 73-75 kit, bolted them together. I have a guitar stand I use them with and store them in an old pedaltrain hardcase which fits them pretty much exactly.
