Awesome. Thanks. I have much to learn

Hopefully I’ll get to make something worth sharing

I have a (possibly silly) plan to make a small “mini Serge” in a 1590DD guitar pedal enclosure, using CGS PCBs. With some redesign I can fit 8 columns of Serge synth in there.
A question to the Serge synthesists: what would you put in 8 columns?
The kind of music I make could be summarised as “pulses and drones”.
Thanks.

Those enclosures may be a little tight depending on the pcbs and mounting you use. You may want to check out some of these hammond enclosures:

As far as modules go that’s a hard one to answer, I’d probably start with dusg and the vcfq. Those 2 will take up 5 inches if you go full size with the dusg (it can be smaller in the dtg configuration).

Great tip - those cases with the mahogany’s sides are great. I put a dual Benjolin in one.

Yeah, they’re great – I used 2 of the larger ones for my 73-75 boats and a smaller 7x7 for a matrix mixer. They’re pretty affordable too and not too hard to drill with a titanium bit.

You could get a lot out of something like a Creature+:

SMALLSERGE

I like the idea of a preamp (kinda also reminds me of a beefed-up Flower Electronics Jealous Heart like this), but I’d just make the DTG a proper DUSG otherwise.

Thanks. I’ve seen those cases before and think they would make a better enclosure than the 1590DD. I have a 1590DD in the cupboard, but it’ll come in for some other project, no doubt.
A 9x7" case would let me make a “Creature plus”, either with a triple wavemultiplier, or a LFSR module I’ve got half-designed. I’d also probably change the X-fader to a dual VCA into a mixed-down output as well.
9x7" would still fit into a small rucksack, as I want a portable system.

+1 on the VCM and dual VCA. more functionality given the VCA and filtering capacities of the VCM, and the general complex harmonic amplification might be most suitable for your purposes.

and can you build two of these 9x7" instruments? bc I want one. thanks.

Does anybody know which cgs board is the crossfader? I didn’t see one.

I used Craig Lee’s board for Slopey (on Loudest Warning advice):

This video was definately one of the tipping points for my journey into Serge! What a sound

Thanks for sharing my video!

I’ve been logged off Lines for awhile without realizing it but happy to jump back into the party with this nice surprise :flushed:

I know there’s been lots of discussion regarding the “banana” deal and I have to say, banana took over for me. Totally different workflow. I tend to patch much more experimentally & find a little more joy in the process (and heavily as noted by the stacks!).

As far as price goes, based on what I paid my dealer, I think it would be hard to get a skiff of euro that’s any cheaper than I paid my builder for the La Bestia II & the depth of that panel is way less apparent then it looks until you work with it

Since getting into R*S I’ve trade my Shared System for a BUSA Easel & have a La Bestia II, Edelweiss & TKB (I’m debating a Mantra and a row of 4 4x4 modules in the new year. I need that Res EQ & the LPG’s).

After getting a Cocoquantus 2 I had to buy a Plumbutter 2 which hasn’t showed up yet but is in the mail. That’s my set up now. All bananas, no regrets :+1:

@samule.edmoon I’m on the same trajectory. originally hooked by the R*S euroserge modules, sold off a bunch of euro (ironically including a shared system) to get into banana land. Now with la bestia II, edelweiss I, and a small Bugbrand system. would be great to share some patch ideas, especially with such similar systems.

I also feel like I need to add ResEq and at least another wave mult (I was using 2 of each in euroformat.

Sill undecided about sequencing. I have and ARC euro format TKB I plan to use with a format jumbler. Hoping maybe that will be good to tide me over for now.

Bummed to hear your selling you Shared System. Your videos were my favorites and Morphagene into modDemix is one of my favorite tricks! Excited to hear your back on the Easel game though. Those patches are also super inspirational.

What do you think is the best entry point to bananas? I plan on keeping my Shared System and adding other modular systems when funds allow, but I’m torn whether I should start with a Music Easel or a Serge Panel. I have plenty of time to dream before the spare cash winds up in my bank account

I’ve been gassing over an Easel for years so I’ll probably go that route, but I have a very diy-ready friend so maybe I’ll see if he’s up to build some Serge

Thanks for the kind words!

I love the shared system and may get one again some day but I just felt the need for change. Trying to find a different workflow and to focus instead of constant noodling :joy:

Based on my experience with both, I would say Serge if you want to patch like crazy or the easel if you want something immediate. I have a pretty easely serge patch going as we speak that I hope to record n upload later tonight :grimacing:

Though they’re different beasts, there’s something very special in both the instruments oscillators. This is why I decided to part with the make noise, I loved patching it. Experimental for days. But I was never happy with the raw oscillator tones

Bugbrand has gained my interest lately but hasn’t topped the GAS list hah

Believe it or not this is great news to me. I love the sounds of DPO and STO (can’t have just one!) so I’ll just keep chasing those mystical saxophone/bagpipe tones until I can justify some ‘nanners. At any rate I’m enjoying all the new sounds regardless of how you get there

Okay sorry for the MN-centric OT ramble!
