I built a mini serge thing in a guitar pedal type enclosure. It was a tight squeeze but I did some of the circuits on perf board and modified eurorack pcbs.

what did you use for power?

I’m using an external linear power-one psu in a box.

It would be more useful with something like a laptop supply and converter.

Did you do the perfboard layouts yourself or is there another resource you used?

I do the perf as I go based of the schematics. I find that easier than trying to follow other peoples perf layouts.

@widdly: cool, that looks super smart.
Can you remember which type of enclosure you used?

I think it is a hammond 1590ff.

Pretty different, but definitely GAS-worthy. I’m having a lot of fun focusing on that now whilst the Serge stuff gets babysat elsewhere.

What’s the angle of E?

Honestly, I have no idea. Even in my drafts I have no mention of an angle. I measured the dimensions of the cabinets, transferred these into keynote and moved the elements around until (a) there was enough space for stacked banana cables in the angle area, and (b) it looked okay.

And I can second it works perfectly! Thanks again for sharing the design.

This matrix switch was added to my old Serge that I sold to Michael Land who designed it as part of his MFA at Mills CCM in the late 80’s. In 2009 he sold it to Jim O’Rourke. Some of the paper STS panels were originally part of the system I sold to Michael in 86. Makes me sad and I miss it, but I think about the old system every time I hear O’Rourke’s music. I built it when I worked with Serge and the gang back on Western Ave in the late 1970’s before Serge moved up to SF.

Did you design the matrix switcher? Or was Darrell Johansen also involved at that point?

Is Doepfer A-171-2 -with the mod- any close to (half) DUSG?

I’ve got two of them that I’ve modded – they are so excellent I’ve ordered two more! They are slightly different than the euro R*S DUSG (missing the Pulse and Bipolar outs), and can’t be used as a precise v/oct oscillator but they’re compact, ultra flexible and highly recommended.

a closer Euro format approximation to the USG, save the Elby ES114, might be Make Noise Function… (plus it has an ‘HOLD’ input like the DUSG predecessor, the R7)…

also a part of 0Coast, no?

Question re:cases. I’ve read some threads over on MW about case solutions for Serge panels, but many of them are a bit outdated, or light on the details (as it seems to me like many were diy’d end cheek type solutions)

Was wondering if anyone around here has any good ideas, particularly “off the shelf” stuff since my DIY skills are weak, and my spare time is limited (which I would rather spend making noise).

I do know that Elby sells a 3 panel end cheek setup, but its kinda expensive it would seem, as its made from plastic.

My system will likely end up being 2-3 panels plus a TKB. Bonus points for portable solutions

in the meantime, I’ve bought a tabletop rack stand to keep things secure untill I can figure out a more elegant solution.

does Doepfer A-171-2 go high in the audio rate? (at least higher than maths/function?)

If you want something portable, Zero Halliburton cases seem to be popular, although details are definitely light on how folks are setting them up. You could probably get some answers by asking on the Serge FB group or on other forums.

The most straightforward solution is to put rack ears on the boats (which are usually $30 hammond or bud boats) and mount them in a rack. Beyond the elby side panels, afaik most of it is all custom woodwork. The elby stuff isn’t usually terribly expensive when you convert from AUD.
