Here’s the EuroSerge version, you can get it as a kit or a built module, maybe there are others as well

Toppobrillo Sport Modulator is an answer - you’ll need to scour secondhand markets for it, but quite faithful to the SSG:

How about the SSG itself?

If you want the updated original you could always get the Randomsource version.

I really rate the Sports Modulator. I used to have 2 but sold one of them. They are perfect next to a Maths feeding it.

Thanks all! Does anyone happen to know if anyone has attempted to mod a res eq such that particular bands are under cv control?

I’ve seen this asked a lot over the years, the issue is that all the bands interact to a certain extent, and the way it is designed it would require 10 VC crossfaders and even then CV control would be a bit skewy. I have seen (and tried myself) VCA’s on the output of each band and this works for level mixing etc but is a large project!

As someone cleverer than me has said elsewhere:

> The RES EQ works with phase cancellation. Each pot is actually a crossfader. It crossfades between the input signal and a phase inverted sum of the output of all the filters and sends that on through its band filter. All the band filter outputs are summed and that becomes your final output.
*> *
> This means that when the band knob is all the way “down” the output of that band is actually a phase inverted mix of ALL the other bands as heard through that band’s filter and the settings of any of the other knobs will affect what you hear. When the band knob is all the way “up” it will have the output you expect.

I see the ‘updated Serge only from RS’ a lot, and it is probably worth pointing that all the new Elby Serge (euro and 4U) is also being / has been updated - with Serge’s input.

The Carnivore doesn’t track great, but the DUSG, I’ve got the XL, seems to track really well. Yes, I’m fairly open to DIY. What I’m actually thinking of doing is building a cv processor that is on the Doepfer DIY page, it looks super simple. I’ll just make my own aluminum panel so it will fit in the R*S format.

Btw, it’s super annoying that the Loudest Warning and R*S panel and mounting are different. What’s the deal with that?

does anyone have any intel about R*S offering FS or WAD in the near future? it seems sorta odd that they haven’t yet…

i’m planning a second panel to complement my la bestia. edelweiss looks nice but i’ll probably do a mix n match of 4x4 because i want ResEQ. this will probably be the only serge thing i can finance for 2021 so i’m trying to be smart

I asked them a while ago and they said they were working on an audio processing panel (hopefully similar to a soup kitchen). That was maybe 2 years ago and I’ve been disappointed waiting for something like that. Loudest Warning sometimes takes commissions to build the WAD, but it is not cheap and even if you get one, they are prone to failure with the old SAD chips. I believe there’s somebody who goes by bagoly and working on some similar and inspired takes of frequency shifter and WAD (they may be digital, but I’m not sure).

just want to emphasize this. Elby also offers a ton of Serge (and CGS, Ian Fritz, et al—some of which RS used to offer years ago) modules/pcbs that RS doesn’t and probably won’t any time in the near future

The Bagoly delay is digital, based on a Teensy. I was lucky enough to get one as a test build. I haven’t heard from the designer in a while so I am not sure what the status is.

The Bagoly frequency shifter is 100% analog though.

Meanwhile there are rumblings of a way to get the WAD working with MN3207 or the Coolaudio equivalent instead of the rare and delicate SAD1024s so WADs may become attainable in the near future.

Someone from The Synth Forum That Shall Not Be Named posted this photo about a year ago, with their 4u built in a wooden case. It looks like the screw holes and panel sizing are both different. Loudest Warning’s tumblr explains how all the specs came to be for their panel designs. Unsure about R*S.

Ah cool, thanks! Its good to see these next to each other like that.

Loudest Warning format is cool, but my conclusion is that it’s like eurorack in 4U format with banana jacks. The 4x4 format is a little more restricted (only four modules in a panel) and mostly a good workaround if Random Source doesn’t have the panel you want. Personally, I’m a big fan of the constraints of the single fixed panel.

finally had some time to mess around a bit (haven’t touched the thing in months)… so those crackly granular type sounds there are definitely coming from the positive slew (pulse output) whose rate is modulated by (pseudo)random CV from the EGs, and the resulting mess is then probably going through a waveshaper or two… in general for those kinds of sounds, you want to have lots of fast modulation happening, so that it goes into this weird organic grainy territory.

i uploaded some samples of the melodic/harmonic stuff if anyone’s interested in that side of things - this is all just subharmonics and manually tuned individual gates from the comparators/window outs:

Totally agree with the benefits of choice restrictions associated with single panels… massively reduces the temptation to flip (the main thing I don’t miss about Eurorack)

absolutely. i just wish there was a panel from R*S that i felt like more directly meets my needs. the right side of edelweiss doesnt seem super necessary to me for my practice (mostly interested in drones). i think probably ill just hold off until they release another control/processing panel. la bestia is plenty to chew on for a bit.

I completely agree with you! I love the “panel” form. I miss my La Bestia everyday

That being said, I’ve heard a few people say that about LW and I totally get it but I’ve been working with Charlie on a single panel (that I hope to keep as my only panel).

It’s basically a “La Bestia +”.

I never felt that La Bestia was lacking anything but this route saves me a grand or so (being a non DIYer and that R*S prices have increased greatly since I sold mine) and adds a few nice features like a dual VCA with 2 inputs each, a small logic section, 2 oscillators vs 1 & a bi-polar mixer.

The 258 choice was a hard one for me to make as this does make it feel more “euroracky” but they do sound good and have a decent feature set, quite capable of drones I’m sure. I’m hoping it doesn’t take away from the Serge experience too much though. Only time will tell :crossed_fingers:

that panel is near perfect as a single panel imho. also, having worked w/charlie before its totally worth it. also, plus, etc, nice panel name

I just finished the panel design for my Elby modules in a Hammond enclosure, I had to squeeze things a little tighter than the standard 1"x0.75" grid because I wanted to fit in the noise board. But now I’m thinking I could/should try to fit the noise somewhere (maybe between the OSC and DUSG?) and put a 1U mixer where the noise is.
Option two is to make a format jumbler/mixer/Teensy sequencer boat next. I’m leaning more towards the latter but it might be nice to have this boat be standalone… thoughts?
