So they are a little pricey, but I really appreciate the flexibility of the stands made by cremacaffe. I had gotten a few when I had a number of Elektron machines—and while this is still mostly how they are branded, I still use them for other gear, notably 19" single row rack instruments (Buchla Easel Command & an R*S boat), a Pyramid, a Plumbutter 2, etc.

I usually use either one of these, or two of these, depending on what is on the desk at any given time.

I’m using the K&M 17580 Heli 2 black
they are sturdy, foldable, light and easy to travel. They can hold both STS and R*S boats.

I’ve seen that Thomas Ankersmit also using them in his gigs

Planning my 73-75 expander boat, pretty settled on this. Going to have LW make the panel up for me in paperface, with everything spaced out enough to fill a 17" space: https://www.modulargrid.net/s/racks/view/1386506

All boards on the way except for Wave Mults

Can’t disagree with the choice of module at bottom right

Do you want to stack them, or is “tabletop” okay?
I have these sawhorses I bought from Woodie’s DIY in Ireland in 2008 or so for my Elektrons back then, but they work terrifically with three 4u boats, see photos. I’m sure you can find similar where you are.

Apologies for the state of the place; I’m only after unpacking the studio stuff that came with me.

hey has anyone else seen the isntragram post from random*source of a layout for dpo/peak + trough? i might misunderstand the comments and description but it seems like theyre releasing a euro version?

That sounds like a packed panel for Eurorack. Or at least a big one!

I really dig this panel! If anyone wants to hear more from Charlie/LW panels … this reminded me of a track I made with one of Charlie’s “Sing to me” panels.

Aye, they finally got around to updating the R*S website:

Against my better judgment I’ve been watching/listening to a lot of Serge stuff and have been seriously considering the possibility of picking up a Serge panel.

I was wondering if anyone would be able to point me in the right direction of where to start looking. I think what I really want out of it would be sort of like an expanded Double Knot - something deep and rich in sound and relatively straightforward, but with a little more flexibility and control.

I would love to be able to approach Jim O’Rourke Steamroom style drones/landscapes but also more rhythmic/percussive/IDM type stuff (think Floating Points).

I’m looking into the R*S Mantra for two reasons - one being the sequencer, and the other being that it seems like a good way to start out and get my feet wet. I’m also wondering if I shouldn’t just get a custom panel built tailored to exactly what I want.

Of course you should do that! Get in touch with Loudest Warning and assemble the panel of your dreams.

I’ve never used a Mantra, but my first Serge boat was very similar. Personally, while I value the flexibility of Serge modules such that one can technically get away without a proper oscillator, I found that I was much happier with a dedicated oscillator (for the sake of tracking & tuning, not to mention wanting to not limit my modulation options).

The Loudest Warning approach is great, in my opinion. I have taken delivery of two custom panels this week, and I’m overjoyed. You would be able get everything you want into a single panel. I found it to be more affordable than R*S or M Class.

That said, I would not have trusted myself to make good decisions about what I wanted on these panels had I not had the chance to try some existing modules to see what worked and what didn’t.

This this and this. It would be so easy to invest in a custom panel that ends up not being what you want at all until you have enough experience to know what you need… If you want to go this route I would treat Charlie as a consultant more than a builder. Have a thorough discussion with him about what you want to achieve musically and let him recommend the modules and layout.

The R*S panels are a fantastic place to start, and make up have of my system. The La Bestia II is a super versatile deep panel, I made a whole album just using that and a delay. They are well selected and specified.

It’s hard to know what you want in your system until you get in to the Serge mindset… it’s so different then eurorack. I only have one dedicated oscillator in my whole system, for example. And I don’t use sequencers that much, and often not for sequencing…

This is what I’m dealing with at the moment. I’ve got a DUSG which I’m using for my VCO, but the tracking is only ok for about 2 octaves but I’d like to free up this for more modulation. I’ve got a VCFS and Carnivore which I can use for VCO’s too but the tracking is just a teeny bit worse, just barely gets what I need for melodic stuff. I have 5 R*S 4u panels currently, https://cdn.modulargrid.net/img/racks/modulargrid_1380390.jpg
What do you guys recommend for a stable VCO? NTO? Something by LW?
Has anyone checked out the Slightly Nasty stuff?

Yeah, this is the reason why I’m considering the R*S panel. I have some years of eurorack under my belt and there was a ton of trial and error starting out. At least with a commercially available panel I could find a used one and/or sell it if I didn’t click with it.

I think what I’m trying to find is a happy medium between the consistency of eurorack and the sound of ciat-lonbarde.

Anyhow I have a lot to think about so the research will continue in the meantime. Thank you for the insight!

This is exactly what I just did.

I had a bunch of euro, wasn’t getting along with the format: endless buy and sell and lack aesthetic unity. Sold most of it, then got a few 4u R*S panels, and honestly couldn’t be happier with the choice. Its all of the flexibilty I liked about euro, with less choices to distract, more real estate, banana jacks, and honestly it sounds better.

I must mention I went on a brief Buchla forray with a 208c as well, and I prefer the Serge to the Buchla, mostly because of the price, but also, I feel like I like the Serge mindset more.
But with all that said, I’m glad I bought modules and not a panel first. Its easier to test the waters on what you want.

Out of curiosity, on average how much does LW charge for his panels? How long is the wait? Are the majority of the components coming from CGS/Elby custom builds that he is combining?

Curious about that info as well. After doing a bunch of reading & listening I’m very much into the idea of LW’s BB-258/Sing to Me panel…

i have found myself really really interested in the r*s euro modules as of late. i picked up a vcfq earlier this year and in a short amount of time it’s become my favorite filter. i’ve dug through the thread a bit and found that folks really love the sort of distinct funkiness of the dusg. i just received a dusg in the mail yesterday to accompany my primarily monome/mannequins/mn system and i was curious in what ways all of you use yours? any different patching workflows proven to be rewarding? also curious about using the v/oct feature!

Just kind of doubling down on a lot already said here but if you wanted the Serge experience (patch programming, functional density, feedback routing) having a panel like the Mantra would go a long way. It sort of forces you to work with those concepts without the traditional subtractive model in place. Before R*S existed the STS Creature + Sequencer A panel was a good gateway into the format. I had some variation of that setup for years but once I landed with a Creature + Sequencer combo everything really clicked with me, those two panels alone are deep. Add a DUSG + Active Processor and you will have a lot to work with. A little goes a long way for me when it comes to Serge.

All that in mind I also owned a Sing to Me panel and HIGHLY recommend it. Charlie’s mods and 258 integration are incredible. He knows the format inside and out. I can’t speak directly to what he charges nowadays, you would probably have to reach out to him (he’s incredible friendly and knowledgable). I will say whatever you pay, LW provides quality Serge.
