Hot dog. That sure bucks the trend; thanks for the tip!

I wonder how they sound.

I am a newcomer to the SERGE world with Eurorack modules from Random * Source. I came to it fleeing from the compulsive purchase of modules from different brands. I arrived fleeing the chaos of colors, shapes and infinite options available. And I have to say that I am VERY happy with the path I have taken. I have not abandoned the eurorack world because for my work process I consider it essential to work with previously recorded samples to be manipulated later (via ER301) or to generate random note sequences to create chords (via TELETYPE). The reality is that after a little more than a month with these modules, I am no longer interested in ANYTHING that any other brand can bring to the market. I have stopped compulsively watching ads, videos, tutorials or demos of modules from other brands. I am no longer interested in them, and now I spend much more time creating and listening to what others create. Nor am I very interested in what tools other artists create with. Everyone has their own, and I finally think I’ve started to see my modular system as an instrument.

I think that the main problem of the modular world is that the original advantage that this system had (that of being able to connect the audio or CV outputs in the way that one considers, instead of being configured at the factory), has been transformed into “You can make your own system by choosing from more than 4000 different modules from more than 300 manufacturers.” This leads to significant mental exhaustion, since one lives in a permanent search. It is really toxic, at least for me.

On the other hand, the discussion of whether 3U or 4U also seems a bit banal to me. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, and I think the important thing is to know that the limitations of each system are good in the long run. In addition, this would lead us to think that we are all the same and we think in the same way. For me it is important that my system can be easily transported, but for someone else the larger size of the modules and the separation between knobs may be a priority.

In any case, for me the SERGE system has made me see that a series of apparently simple, simple parts, without thousands of jacks or potentiometers (the DUSG is a very significant sample of a tremendously dense module but at the same time simple in its design ) can together create EXTREMELY COMPLEX sounds.

Many friends have asked me “but what can you do with SERGE that you cannot do with other modules, such as MAKENOISE or INTELLIJELL?”. When they ask me this I answer "If we put the best wine that we can think of, on the one hand in a crystal glass and on the other in a disposable plastic glass, undoubtedly the wine will be the same, but the experience will not be the same. And if the experience is not the same, the wine will not taste the same to us ".

Very interesting points here. My 4U vs 3U comparison it was just to share my thought process and why I chose the 3U format. I might change my mind later, and the good thing about 3U is that it’s easy to do that in the 2nd hand market.
I’ve also reached the point where I see my modular system as an stand-alone instrument and Serge gives me the right tools to follow my creative ideas. I don’t see the 3U as a toxic environment, i think we’re just still early in the game and most people haven’t really figured out what they are really looking for and they experiment with various modules, which is great and possible only in 3U: Easy access, competitive pricing, great 2nd hand market. I think and I hope that most of us will eventually settle down with a system that we see as a real instrument and we’ll dive in more and more in its endless possibilities.
And those who are just constantly buying stuff without any creative output, I think they’ll exit the game soon. I see more and more people selling their whole systems.

CGS92 SSG question:

There’s a paragraph on the Elby page that I don’t understand

Due to the rarity of the CA3080, Component Kits are being supplied with the LM13700. In this instance the pads marked ‘2’, ‘3’, 5’ & ‘6’ should be connected to the associated pads on one CA3080 and repeated for the second set of pins on the second CA3080.

What does this mean? I either use 3080s or use an LM13700 and run wires to the 3080 pads?

Exactly. There are markings on the board to show you how to wire across.

However… I’ve heard the LM13700 hack doesn’t always work very well. If you have 3080s I strongly recommend using them.

I found the post on Facebook where Serge shows how to correct the SSG circuit to work with LM13700s. Erm, slightly embarrassing if you look closely. I guess with this in hand one can use an LM13700 and make some resistor changes to get it working.

Edit: I now see that the Elby build page has these resistor changes and couple of extra mods noted. With those in place this should be ok with an LM13700.

my plan was to try and find a couple and use an LM13700 if I have no luck

yeah there’s a diagram on the ken stone page for some resistor changes, not sure if that’s for something else or not

If you mean this one https://www.elby-designs.com/webtek/cgs/serge/cgs92/cgs92-modifications.pdf then yes, that’s the mod for the LM13700.

That’s the one, cheers

I have a mix of 1/4W and 1/8W resistors, though I notice the CGS 73 VCF BOM states 0.5W… can I use what I have? Can’t see how necessary 0.5W rating is…

1/4W will be fine generally. Ken Stone used to specify 1/4W. I don’t know why Elby insists on 1/2W.

For values over about 10k 1/8W will be all right too. Lower than that would depend on where it is in the circuit.

Thanks for this! Since the Scanner stipulates 0.5W I think I’ll just bulk buy everything I need as 0.5W.

Anyone built one of the recently re-released Elby Voltron kits? Thinking of pulling the trigger… seems like an affordable option to complement a 73-75 homebuilt.

The Hollasynth scanner? I am pretty sure I said 1/4W for the resistors. (0.5W will be fine of course, if you have them.)

Ah, yes you did. Derp

Hello everyone! I’m introducing a new series of videos following my experiments with Serge Feedback Systems, inspired by the feedback works of Eliane Radigue, experimental label Moving Furniture Records, Todd Burton’s feedback patches, the feedback systems/cybernetics theory and “La Synthese Humaine” YouTube channel. I’m using the Random Source Serge modules VCFQ & Triple Waveshaper, and the Erbe-Verb as my only sound processor for this track.

I’m planning on making this little EuroSerge Skiff in the coming new year. I’m looking to get weird percussion and synth drones from it, with integration with my Eurorack system of course. I like the idea of having everything in one case together. What do you think?

just perfect. don’t forget the stackable cables.

It’s worth thinking about https://randomsource.net/docs/RandomSource_Serge_ANC_Euro.pdf in this setup. It seems pedestrian, but you get the noise sources for the SSG, a fader/panner, and a CV mixer. The ResEQ is pretty glorious but it offers the least CV control. With the CV Pro you can mix the bands from the VCFQ and recover some of the timbral/spectral shaping offered by the ResEQ.
