amazing! post any sketches you want to share! Also I’d be very interested in the details of the residency…

Serge works with Random Source. It’s all I need to know.
Further discussions are personal matters between the people involved.

Paperface panels without selecting your module mix could get strange. I know I struggle with the mix on most combos of 1-2 RS panels. For sure it’s a personal choice that will not please all but that is one of the cool parts to “paperface” in my mind. One thing’s for sure. The tease photos are sexy… The more “Serge” options we have the better. Wonder when the “Add to Cart” button will surface?

True. I guess I was never expecting to see Random Source do a paperface line, but after things went south with Prism, sounds like Serge and Random Source saw there was a demand for it and were like, “Fuck it, we’ll do it ourselves. And Serge himself will update those circuits to make them better! And, oh yeah, we’re celebrating 50 years of Serge Modular, so let’s go all out and announce something no one was expecting from us!”

Serge has been wanting to update the OG lineup for a long time. I imagine the resergence [sic] of paperface interest certainly helped those plans along.

My guess is that they were already working on the Paperface line and they encouraged Serge to shut down his blessing towards Prism. I saw the whole thread unfold on Facebook and by all accounts Serge was all in to give Prism the go ahead but R*S stepped in.

Hi Everyone-
Are there any noteworthy guides out there to patching the SSG? I feel like I’m drastically underusing or misunderstanding it, especially the stepped side. Thanks in advance!

My favorite guide, tho I’ll admit i find it the most confusing Serge thing as well: Wizardry
I recently sold a backup SSG and almost had to process a return as the buyer was convinced it was broken, luckily he was patient as I walked him through each section to prove it was functioning as normal. It’s that kind of a module.

Luke Teaford has a few on MW. This one is the one that, for me, unlocked the SSG. Enjoy and prepare to get lost!

looks like there’s a restock of various assembled and diy units in the 73-75 web store. i wish they took paypal

it looks like 4x8. A new module line?
Holy shit, Random-Source says there’s 50 Burr-Brown op-amps in the the VC Resonant EQ.
Whether this is a limited panel or will find its way into 4x4 or Euro in a built or DIY capacity is heavily dependent on the ongoing chip shortage.

This is something I’ve always wanted, but am a bit worried it’s going to end up similar to the Haible SoST in terms of cost and availability.
I do wish R*S would bring some of the 4x4 modules that they have teased to the market.

I consider myself still a beginner in the Serge system and I saw that Random Source will bring out a new paperface system. I was wondering how different might that be from a normal Serge system 3U or 4U. It looks more “primitive” and simple to me but I have no clue. Anyone can shine a light?

I’m thinking of going from Euroserge to something self-built in banana format and the 73-75 being back perked my ears up, so I’d love to hear opinions too.
Also curious now that the dust is settled what opinions there are about Prism- don’t want to reignite arguments but on paper (pun intended) this is exactly the project I want to do and it’s really just concern about respecting the inventor that’s keeping me from diving in.

Elby has a lot boards for those old modules too. Low-gain has a lot of boards too. Loudest Warning has some excellent information on his site for some modules.
I’m not trying to stir the pot up here and I completely respect Serge, but I feel like you shouldn’t worry as much if you are doing DIY. You are doing so much of the work anyway and RS has pretty poor DIY options for 4U. Even worse if you want to build your own panel and not modules, so what are you supposed to do? It’s totally their prerogative to offer limited DIY options, but Serge started as an affordable, DIY way to get into modular synthesis.
I really recommend building your own panel if you have the skills. I found to experience to be difficult but so rewarding. It’s so cool to have everything I want (that I could fit) and I feel a unique pride every time I play it.

I posted this link recently, but since you asked – you might check this out too:
Filter the Function Block column on “SSG” and go to town. Many of the patches on that sheet came directly from the SSG Wizardry pages (John Papiewski) – another way to tackle his patch tips.

real dumb question here (and not strictly Serge-specific), but: I know two identical signals with inverted polarity will in many cases cancel each other out, so I got the idea of running some audio through both sides of the Peak/Trough and mixing the inverted results into the original with the Dual Processor, with the assumption that this might produce some kind of filtering (as the inverted signals would cancel out the corresponding parts of the original) – this is what I got:
(edit: fixed broken link)
I have a pretty poor grasp of this stuff, so I’m wondering if that’s what’s actually happening here? and if yes, what kind of signals might this kind of cancellation have the most noticeable/potentially useful effect on? (I’m trying to understand this because I accidentally got some interesting results putting complex audio through the P&T and messing around with mixing the different outputs in the DP, which seemed to me to filter one and the same source into three quite distinct versions – see the newest public upload on the SC page for some demos of that experiment)
