Lovely silver Chord. Silver modules have grown on me since I started.

Btw, I watched all your instagram videos recently. The notes are great!

Thanks!! I saved my wallet since I decided buying silver (light) panels only. Hmm, part of my wallet.

I wish I understood the fascination with the black and gold faceplate color scheme. It seems like awhile ago, black modules were the exception not the rule. Ever since MN came out with their black and gold shared system, it seems like many manufactures are moving to that color scheme. My OCD kicks in everytime I see one black faceplate in my sea of otherwise silver panels…

haha, can and do relate to this

I’m probably the most OCD about having different knob styles in my rack…

I’d prefer my panels to match better than they do, but I’m not willing to pay extra to make it happen. Especially since it’d involve custom panels for things like Natural Gate, which is already beautiful, if completely mismatched to everything else…

I find that small and less commonly used modules tend to get overlooked more if they and their neighbors have dark panels, than if they’re all silver or contrasting.

Like you, I’ve never cared one way or another about the color of my panels, and though I would prefer uniformity it would be far too complex to achieve and would lose all the unique, individual designs which I love…

I like your observation about color affecting usage… while it’s always seemed natural to me that the ergonomics of a module (knob/jack size and layout, buttons, graphics/design, the UI, etc) would push you towards or away from using certain modules, I’ve never considered that the color itself might be ā€œattractingā€ or ā€œrepellingā€ me subconsciously… though I’m sure you are correct! I often patch with all the lights off late at night so as not to disturb my partner… I’m sure the color of modules (and where the blinkenlights are in my case) guides me in ways I don’t realize then!

Just dropping in to say your doodles are more akin to master paintings than sketches haha.

Seriously that is some inspiring stuff coming out of that petite little case. Not entirely even my style but damn, gotta say I’m enthralled.

That’s some fantastic ingenuity. I have an open backed rack, at the moment, and I think a similar use of standoffs and plexiglass seems like it could be a reasonable way to protect the backs of my modules.

Is that 2mm or 3mm aluminium?
It’s really beautiful

thank you both!

it’s served me well on multiple flights since time of posting—recommended.

3mm!

So i’m a long time lurker of this forum and felt the urge to post more on here because the vibe is good.

So part one of my ā€œmore posting routineā€ is showing off my modular (my main system)

Nice! May I ask what the large 1U module is (the one with the button keyboard). Looks interesting.

It’s a diy midi expander for MI yarns called Needles (you can find it on the MI forum) It has every big parameter of Yarns under a knob or button (some with the shift button) It makes the Yarns a totally different beast. I’m not using it with a externel keyboard that often.

The joystick to the right of it are also send to the yarns as midi messages this allows me to setup the X and Y to the Yarns output. My yarns is 6hp version only because i don’t touch the module that often with the expander (only micro version i’m willing to take).

My modular synth started with the theme of exploration. Even though I found particular areas of exploration that I wanted to get deeper into, I still wanted to maximize flexibility and versatility. At one point I had four LPG modules for their slightly different sounds, two complex oscillators for their different characters plus favored ways to patch modules into a similar configuration, etc.

I admired instruments like Ann Annie’s, or Nathan Moody’s Blue / Red boxes, or several of the synths here – and I would occasionally daydream about going to a couple of small, 1-2 voice synths myself (one Harvestman/Make Noise, one Mutable Instruments). But that never materialized because I kept thinking: maximum versatility.

About a week ago, I was listening to the Esoteric Modulation podcast and thinking about the focused design choices that go into instruments like the Lyra-8 or even a Microbrute. They’re not a kitchen sink of features, and that is their strength. They have a particular character that comes through in the playing experience and the sound, even though they are synthesizers with a wide variety of timbres and playing styles. That character helps forge an emotional connection and makes better music.

I realized: I make specific, focused music, but I have kept this ā€œmaximum flexibilityā€ mindset and have, in some ways, sacrificed character, simplicity and immediacy to it.

Yesterday morning I had the realization that I’d actually been avoiding my ER-301 recently, and have been craving the modules that I tried to replace with it. Over the course of a few hours I made some sales, trades and purchases and I’m on the way to something that I think suits me better. More focused, a bit smaller, but still very versatile and with new opportunities for exploration.

This is a step along the way:

And where this is going, at least for now:

A couple of the new things will be on probation – they have to serve the music I make without feeling extraneous or like overkill. If I don’t love the HD mk3 unconditionally, it’s getting replaced with a mk2 because I know I like that one. T-Rackonizer was a trade opportunity and a bit of a whim, though I’ve wanted to try the desktop version for years now. SMR needs to at least cover some of the additive synthesis ground I was getting with ER-301. Panharmonium’s only been in my rack a few days and I think it might have a long-term place, but I’m still kind of evaluating it.

did you sell your er-301 already?

Yup, I managed to trade it pretty quickly!

You should replace that Tangle Quartet with a Vnicursal VCA!
