I’m using this in its “tablet” mode (no drivers required) into Volca FM.

No matter what MIDI device I try or physical USB port on the Norns, no MIDI gets to the Volca FM. Output in Awake is set to “MIDI.” MIDI channel is set to “1” on Norns and the Volca.

Are there any general caveats when selecting a USB MIDI interface to go with Norns? I had hoped to use this one as it’s slim and I wanted Norns + a battery-powered synth and little else for outdoor jamming…

I shall have to double-check, but I had my norns hooked up to an iConnectMIDI2+ and I’m sure I managed to pass MIDI between norns and MacBook. I didn’t try the MIDI2’s 5-pin MIDI connections but am happy to give it a spin and report back.

I use a Creative MIDI interface (looks very similar to the Roland) with Norns and it works fine. In order to get it connected to the DAW on my computer, I need to plug the Creative into another MIDI interface that has the female 5-pin DIN connectors. But if you have a synth with the 5-pin inputs, it should work fine by itself.

Make sure you using the right 5-pin connector. I was confused by which is input and which is output, which made me think it wasn’t working at first.

is your midi device properly set in SYSTEM > DEVICES > MIDI in the norns menu?

I can definitely use the UM-One to drive a Shruthi from Norns. As @tehn suggests, make sure that the UM-One is set/detected in the MIDI system settings.

Yup, that did it. I had no idea there even was a global device settings… I had been looking in “params.”
