Sound is the first of the five senses we experience. We feel our mother’s heartbeat while residing in the womb: a pulsating sense of being connected, something nurturing us to the next stage of life. This might be why Suss Müsik finds the soft, hypnotic thump of a bass drum so reassuring. It’s a repetitive affirmation that we are safely alive, a beat that burrows into the listener’s center of gravity, sonic vibrations that are felt rather than heard.

Raymond Scott’s Soothing Sounds for Baby, surprisingly, is not an endless cocoon of light and fluffy lullabies (for that sort of treatment, check out Steven Halpern’s Music for Babies). Scott’s music is playfully percussive, with odd twists and an occasional electronic blip to keep things interesting. It’s not music for sleeping; it calms a baby by activating the human mind’s exploratory instincts. Soothing Sounds for Baby is perfect writing music.

This piece is fairly typical of Suss Müsik ambient explorations. In this case, flutes and other wind instruments are played and treated with a dollop of echoey reverb. Bass drum seemed too harsh for this context, so a sofa cushion was thumped with a wooden spoon to provide the rhythmic spine. The result is meditative without being anesthetizing, a preparatory calm before the next threshold is reached.

There are two nephews and seven nieces within the Suss Müsik ecosystem. This piece is dedicated to the most recent, a beautiful baby girl who last month celebrated her first birthday.

Synthesizer on audiotool.com playing a melody in G major that modulates up to A minor then repeats. The sound is split into 3 parts: original, pitch delay down 50%, pitch delay down 100%, all with reverb. Recorded into Audacity then copy/paste/slow down by 1% four times, then resampled and that track pitched down an octave.

About 2 minutes long since I’m running outta room on my Soundcloud account.

Since I usually have some sort of music playing when I go to sleep(much of it from the Junto), I made this a little longer and more peaceful than my usual bits. Starting with Waldorf Nave I made a slowly evolving pad for the body of the piece. Then I added a nice female speaking track with a hp filter and a bit of verb to give a sense of muted distance. It still needed a little more body so I got a simple patch in Animoog for some quiet bass. The final track is a field recording of high plains wind that is mixed low with some widened sound field. Only added a little presence to the master channel in Cubasis. As always, used Ocenaudio for wav slicing and conversion. Thanks! @disquiet

I used to sing this to my daughter when she was a baby. It did not help her a bit but it did help pass the time as I made a loop around the kitchen. I could never remember the lyrics past “don’t shine”. Extra points to whoever can guess the high hat faint bass bump sample -if you’re thinking of a city in Canada you are burning hot.

One album that has been popular through all three pregnancies I’ve caused and subsequently recommended to friends for their babies is a CD reissue of waves crashing on a beach.

The recording of Valla Beach embedded above was made a few months ago during our winter holidays to the north. It was recorded using a Rode Videomic on my Nikon D5100 SLR.

Last night I added a couple of Valhalla reverbs, as well as a low C using Massive and mastered with Ozone 7.

I tried all sort of things for this week’s Disquiet Junto project. Chimes, music boxes, spoons. (well not the spoons). Nothing seemed to work.
I did want to include a human element (step up the the microphone Mrs audiodays). I sampled the voice through a couple of instruments in Ableton Live and added the oblatory heartbeat drum.
I can imagine many a new born baby dropping off to sleep while this is playing. I did.

this week was crazy. i literally just posted a track i had been working on using my samples of my best friends baby daughter. but i didn’t want to be lazy so i started from scratch.

i thought about music, soothing and went for some debussy midi files. took an incredibly small snippet and started building with hardware with modified impressionist harmony setting. laid over simplified rhodes chords and sh101 lead. got frustrated at dysfunction/boring nature. gave up

next session fed the master stereo to the chocolate grinder (rodrigo is a genius). then put modulated eos reverb on. that opened up for new rhodes, new sh101, a cr78 beat through multiple passes with varrying fx.

next session pulled it all together structure wise. then fender jazz bass and g&l asat custom and somehow going on the slight glitch inspired a lil-gentle-j(h)ouse filter down sweep out.

cloud into cloud etc. beginning consciousness comfort love contact connection. it took a lot of time this week. i hated it through first two passes and i was sure i was just going to not submit/delete, but it came together in the end. the guidelines were a starting point for me. obviously a whole lot of liberties taken.

This is a piece based on three pieces recorded over 18 years ago when we
started our family. The 1st section is done with an ARP 2600 and a Mellotron sample
played on a Roland S-770 sampler. The 2nd section is a mighty Roland
JD-800. The piece closes with a section performed on an Oberheim OB-Xa.
Unfortunately, I no longer own any of these instruments. Hearing them brings back a time when electronic dinosaurs roamed my studio, and my children were born. Happy Birthday Junto, and thank you.

I use Junto as a way of showing work in progress, sketches; not finished tracks, but more a way of starting tracks. Here is what I wrote on soundcloud:

This is a single take of a piano improvisation. Something I’ve been doodling with for this project over the weekend.

I grew up with a piano in the house, and when I left home, I’ve never had a full-sized instrument in the house - I had a full-size midi keyboard for a bit, and then I didn’t again. Last month, around my 34th birthday, I bought a 73-note stage piano. I’ve been playing it ever since.

I think I still, deep down, amidst the audio and electronics, identify as a piano player. It’s been nice remembering feelings in my fingers and body: the piano is such a bodily instrument.

Anyway: I do not have children. But if I did, I’d welcome them into the world with a piano. The piano doesn’t live in the studio or study; it’s in the living room. It’s a social instrument; music is love. And if I had children, I’d play to them; play for them. There’s so much richness in all those strings (virtual or not); so much to say with 88 keys.

I treat Junto not as a way to show finished pieces, but as a way to start pieces. And thus: there are mistakes, there’s a clipping error. But there’s also something in here, I think. And so: a single take, just audio, and then light mastering and effects.

Goddamn it, babies, you’ve got to be kind.

listened to the records of Raymond Scott and was amazed by the partly strange sounds he combined.
for this track i wanted to get a more analog sounding scape.
my son had some problems with falling asleep,so i found out that the best and fastest method was a road with cobblestone pavement,after two mnutes the job was done.
used instruments : a bowed crystal sound with lots of automations.
Dark Synth for the analog sound.

Hi Juntonians.

Here’s my contribution for the week.

I wanted something mellow on the piano, but ended up using an electronic piano patch from Waves instead. It was called “Good Night”, which seemed fitting. A chord progression switching between D minor and A major had also been rumbling about my head, so I decided to expand on that idea. I tried to keep it all pretty simple, aside from writing it in 5/4, which I’ve been oddly obsessed with lately.
Soothing for baby? Hopefully.

Recently I read something about newborn brains being not really
organized for tracking or pattern recognition which takes time to
develop. I wanted to do something smooth, soothing and enveloping with a
rich spectrum.
I took short guitar phrases and stretched them and
came up with one track that seemed suitable. It sounds like a pad in the
supportive sense of the word –- a lily pad to float away on.
