I was able to pick up a pair of Adam A7Xs last year for about $900 used including shipping. I’m not sure how far under the $1k mark you want to be, but if you wait long enough, you may be able to do even better than that.

I was getting ready to purchase some Focal Alpha 65s or 80s when I came across that. I think those are another well regarded choice.

Thanks! That’s really helpful information.

Oh that’s great, I guess I’d just looked at new prices which is closer to $800 per speaker. I’m not in a rush really, I’ve been writing on mediocre / inappropriate speakers for so long, and I can still hear the clarity of my friend’s A7Xs in my mind’s ear. Thanks!

Just a quick word to say that that I was lucky enough to get a pair of new Focal Shape 65 for 900€ (which is a great price for those) and so far I’m enjoying them a lot. Stereo image is incredibly detailed, it’s got a lot of power and the bass is present but nicely contained. Loving them so far in case anyone was considering a purchase. If I didn’t have that deal I probably would have been going for the A7X.

Genelec might be another budget consideration. I snagged a pair of M030s for under $700 last year. I know they have some other affordable options as well, depending on how big your studio is.

I never in my life thought I’d see this sentence, let alone meant seriously.

I had the chance getting a pair of RCF Mytho 6 for less than half the price. When introduced they were 888€ each. I really like them. The good thing is that they are a lot less known and lusted for than i.e. Genelecs. So you can find them for really good deals online.

Info:

On the genelec front a pair of 1030a can be found second hand for £400-500. As good as the new rounded ones imho.

Genelec 1030 are the absolute best sounding from that old line. I work on bigger or smaller genelecs, as this line became broadcast reference some 30years ago :flushed: in any case 1030 are the most natural sounding for the size! In comparison the new eggy versions are a far step from the quality i was used to with broadcast ref-thats why broadcast still uses the old genelec :joy: i have a pair since 1996, they take a beating and never deceit…i switched to bigger Adams almost 20years ago now, mainly due to Bass response.

Have any of you looked into Neumanns yet?
These are all fantastic sounding-warm and neutral.

When i compose at home i plug a UE Boom straight into my modular :flushed::joy::facepunch:t2:

I love my big Neumann’s to death. If only I had a bigger, more controlled and treated space to do them justice. Gotta sell some records first

I’ve got some baby Genelec 6010s too, which are also great. Planning to add the matching sub to them at some point.

can anyone recommend a pair of nice sounding, but small, wall mountable powered speakers?

they don’t need to be audiophile - but i want them to sound decent - better than the UE boom i’m using now

i want to mount them to the underside of some shelves to add the option of listening to things in my tiny studio outside of headphones.

Wall mounting would seem to introduce lots of difficult to solve acoustic issues? Would love to be wrong, sounds nice for a tight space.

The wirecutter has some good reviews here of what’s current. I like KEF speakers a lot and their inclusion in this list further validates my previous experience with the brand. That said, price and total physical size will probably dominate your choice.

As @jasonw22 said too, shelves are resonant and may rumble, vibrate, or contribute very unfavourable harmonics to the sound, although if speakers set directly ON the shelf don’t cause significant problems, speakers hung under it are not likely to be much more problematic.

acoustics aren’t a huge concern as i can go use some nice genelecs in our other studio. these are more for casual listening.

edited previous post to include that i’m looking for powered speakers

I’ve had great luck with AudioEngine’s stuff for powered. Their A2 or A3 series might be the optimal size for your situation. And they have a great return policy if you’re not stoked.

@equipoise @madeofoak just a follow up – i set up a pair of A2+ monitors yesterday and they sound great. perfect for my space, and a surprise 1/4" threaded mount in the bottom will make hanging them from the underside of my shelf a breeze.

thanks for the solid rec!

Hi all, thanks for the conversation — a lot of great information here.

I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a simple set of speakers. Preferably with some low end, and preferably unsophisticated (ie. not too many buttons, knobs, or, frankly, features).

I’ve realized that that “studio sound” is not only unattainable for me right now (read: sour grapes), it also isn’t, at the end of the day, all that important to me. I just want a simple set of speakers to doodle in Eurorack, and, when I am done with that, put on Viper so I may lulled to sleep by his proto-vaporwave balladry.

I have a pair of Rokit 5s and they’re fine, but I feel like they’re too much and in many ways a half-measure.

I recently picked up a pair of Koss Porta Pros and I love them — bassy, warm sound that is still detailed and not overblown. I was wondering what the speaker equivalent to those headphones would be.

Thanks,
Tejomay

Imagine a space of The Volkswagen Transporter (or Ford Transit on the US market) volume. Room so small! Are there any monitors that produce decent sound in such small space? Theoretically, they should be small and if they’re bass-reflex, they rather shouldn’t have rear port. That’s the theory.
What models can be considered?
