I think one big thing I have to take care of on my lapsteel is that because its a budget model it actually came with a wrap around bridge that has a radius. It should be totally flat and I need to take care of that, either by finding a new bridge or filing the bridge saddles to make the radius flat. I think that may help with the bending and slants, making it easier.

You definitely don’t want a radius on your bridge. I can’t imagine why someone would have done that.

Just get a metal rod or angle bracket cut to the right length. It’s cheap, easy, and will give you great sustain. It’s ridiculous that the budget steel makers put tunable bridges on their instruments.
