I’m a big fan of the furniture company Floyd and currently use their rectangular table as my studio desk (they also have a desk that’s slightly smaller) with one of these on top, holding up my laptop, mixer, and monitors (with some pedals and gear underneath the shelf).

Have you checked out Urban Outfitters?

They have some nice furniture at quite low prices (inc. mid century stuff from memory).

Secondhand mid century stuff (typically teak)is still readily available too (or in UK at least).

dang

discovered this right after finding a couple of great items

That floyd desk would be very easy to diy.

Some birch ply and some legs from ikea (or hairpin legs which you can buy from loads of places now) and you are good to go!

After getting some great ideas/suggestions from this thread, I ended up getting a Platform (via @dan_derks’s suggestion as well as some VEBERÖDs as per @madeofoak’s suggestions).

This is the main desk area with instrument storage next to it:

Really happy with it.

Still enjoying the Platform? I’ve been considering one of those for a long time!

I personally love it for a lot of reasons, I thought it was well thought out and easy to put together, now that I’m using it regularly it’s really one of my most valuable buy in years.

Worth noting : I DID receive something puzzling at first and thought it was super complicated --> It’s because they’d sent me two left legs, making the thing impossible to put together. Quite disappointing for something that expensive, but a picture with an explanation was enough for them to send me a right leg no questions asked so I don’t hold it against them, they’re no IKEA giant company after all.

Other than that, it’s big enough that it can hold a lot of gear, yet still feels comfortable to work with, the rackmounts are a great addition, and I’d seriously advise getting the keyboard trey, even if you don’t use keyboards, it’s big enough that you can put loads of smaller controllers in there and you can adjust how far you want it to come out of the whole desk so it’s really just a complementary storage unit.

Yes it is

Yup, it’s nice. Got some stuff racked up in one of the 3U areas and the other spots fit a mixer and keyboard/mouse nicely when not in use.

Would recommend.

I can also attest I am still enjoying my Platform desk as well (and lucky I got it when I did, they since stopped shipping to Canada for some reason). Like Rodrigo, I’ve racked my soundcard and patch bay on one side and the other two are just serving as random drawers.

Re-surfacing an old thread I really enjoy to say I got a Platform also! I currently only have my interface in the center rack space, but plan on adding probably a Focusrite Octopre underneath as an input expander. My space still feels pretty disorganized though, so I still need to figure out more organization for my gear, which will probably end up being some sort of shelving, or a peg-board style solution, or maybe just a long console along the wall.

On a random note, Output sent me two keyboard trays by accident, so if anyone wants one, let me know! (in the dark colour)

I’m using an Ikea Linmon corner table + straight table, with one of these for an extra shelf (from Amazon, but currently unavailable)

I have a generic wire storage shelf on the end of the straight table because that’s what I happened to already have; my cable hanger is wire-tied to the front of it.

I’ve been looking at custom rack cases on Etsy to house my Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and power switches (and as a possible option to put Eurorack frames in). I almost want to get more rack than I need just as an excuse to use these blank panels:

I bet I could get them to make some custom Eurorack blank panels  Then I’d be tempted to just leave them in instead of buying modules to fill the space.

[disclaimer] As it took me some time to find the right furniture to house my instruments, I decided to share this with you. Not a big Ikea fan or anything. But this thing is seriously practical for what I need. Maybe it suits others too.

So, oke here we go:
I was looking for a sturdy cabinet to bring my monster case to eye height, as I like to patch standing upright. With a shelve that could support my 104hp 7u case. It turned out Ikea’s Hemnes model does a great job at this. My 104hp case fits the (right) compartment and I can easily close the lid as well. To keep it from my toddler when needed. Unlike a lot of other Ikea stuff, it is made of solid wood.

Of all in the IKEA line, the Hemmes group is my favorite. Have several pieces here.

Looking for a wood table that’s about 30inX48in at sitting height. The catch is that I’d like it to pull double duty: studio and live/tour use. I’ve been thinking about building one (with the help of some handier family members) but I’m not sure where to look for plans/ideas.

Anyone have relevant experience or recommendations for pre-made options?

I just use a heavy duty keyboard stand with a plywood top.

Easy to transport and, if you get an adjustable stand you can set it to any comfortable height. I have mine set so its most comfortable to work at standing up.

Won’t win any prizes for furniture design but its functional and cheap.

similar to @UMCorps suggestion, have you considered a flight case with a removable lid on a keyboard stand? I’ve considered building something like you mean, but ultimately decided I’d probably just configure everything around some sort of commercial case for the sake of durability when using it for gigs.

it’s smaller than you’re looking for, but something like this is what I’ve thought of using. this specific company seems to go up to 40x20" in their stock sizes

these are good ideas for sure!
looking into it more i’ve found a couple of options that seem at least interesting.
the most promising is this one that i could mill on the big cnc at a local makerspace.
there’s also this thing that is collapsible but i’m cautious of it’s durability.

I suppose an important factor is whether you want to have to pack all your stuff separately and connect it at the gig, or be able to leave it all/mostly routed. setup/teardown is my least favorite part of playing or watching shows, hence wanting something like a flight case to keep almost everything connected for quick setup. this might matter less if you aren’t planning to gig often.

I’ve considered using opendesk plans for studio furniture, too, since I also am near a makerspace. seem like good designs!

also, it’s less attractive, but you could always just have a nice desk at home and use a plastic folding table for gigs (with a cover if needed) if you didn’t want to go the flight case route.

my setup for this consists of two suitcase synths, a third bit of modular, and a couple of outboard effects. i’m in for some reconnecting either way

the only problem i’ve found with the opendesk thing is that the file isn’t available :frowning:
