I think you wonā€™t break all the songs using this synth/kit, because every song when is saved retains a copy of all the synths/kits used in this song. So you can have a modified version of the synth presets used that is different in every song.

Right, I got this mixed up with samples, which are referenced by filename.

Just ordered one of these last week and Iā€™m super stoked, going to be picking up the Boards of Deluge preset packs as well as some other presets and sample packs from the Synthstrom forums when mine arrives in early June. Iā€™m also watching Loopopā€™s FW 3.0 walkthrough video(s) and plan to read through the official producerā€™s guide prior to receiving my Deluge, which I figure should give me a good head start on figuring out the workflow.

That said, I thought Iā€™d poke my head into this Lines thread to see if all of you current owners have any insights for a newbie (this is also my third synth ever, so I have a lot of learning to do!) To that end - do you all have any wisdom to share with a Deluge newbie, such as synth preset recommendations, favorite sources for sample packs, workflow advice, or even good companion tools (MIDI controllers, other synths, effects boxes, etc.) to purchase in the future?

Learn this beast, one feature at a time. Thereā€™s literally nothing it canā€™t do. But the interface demands thorough and careful training.

Congratulations for your new Deluge! You are in the good way to learn it. Loopopā€™s videos are very good, as are Ron Cavagnaro ones (though a bit more detailed and slower). Boards of Deluge soundpacks are a must for me, but there are also good free soundpacks like the synth sounds from Guilherme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKuu4g8CjIU&feature=emb_title

Just so everyone knows, Synthstrom have just dropped the Deluge 3.1 FW - which, among other things, allows the Deluge to interface with multiple USB-MIDI devices over a powered USB hub, as well as send MIDI via USB. There are some othe fun features like note repeat and finer maximum zoom level in the sequencer, so definitely check out the full release notes!!

Hey Ben! Thank you for asking this - and thank you also to @circuitghost and @mcpepe for your replies! Iā€™m in a very similar position to what you described, Ben: the Deluge is my second synth, and I know Iā€™ve got heaps to learn - about it specifically and in generalā€¦ So really keen to hear the collective wisdom of users on Lines!

My Deluge arrived a little over a week ago, and I feel Iā€™m gradually getting to grips with it - though, to echo what everyone seems to say about it, Iā€™ve only begun to scratch the surfaceā€¦ While I was waiting for it, I occupied myself much as you are. I read the manual; I scoured the web for whatever free samples are available (spoiler alert: thereā€™s a lot!! Basically just use search terms as broad or specific as whatever you have in mind and youā€™ll probably find plenty); I found a great doc full of tips on the Synthstrom forums called ā€˜Understanding the Delugeā€™; I lost track of all the Deluge-related videos I watched and rewatchedā€¦

And Iā€™m pleased to say that, when it arrived and I tried using it for the first time: it made sense! Iā€™m obviously still a very basic user, but even using basic functions Iā€™m able to get results - and an experience - that are fulfilling, at least to me.

Iā€™m not qualified in the least to advise you on workflow, but my approach to building a practical understanding of the device and its functions has been basically to pick a thing I want to learn and then try to do it, using whatever info sources are available. That thing inevitably links to other things, so itā€™s been a good way to cover a small, consumable set of features at a time.

No MIDI controller for me yet. I had my eye on a couple before it arrived, but Iā€™ve decided for now to wait and just use the Deluge itself until Iā€™m more comfortable with all the things. Iā€™ve grabbed the first Boards of Deluge pack and it is indeed excellent - will grab the others soon. Next purchase is the cables to connect my little NTS-1 (inspired by Whales Have Teethā€™s video) to the Delugeā€¦

Very, very useful, thank you! As you say in the doc, it was based on your first experiences, and itā€™s being a great help to my first experiences. But I guess Iā€™m not surprised if it feels dated to you now :grin: And all going well Iā€™ll look back on it and feel the same; but hindsight shouldnā€™t diminish the value of information that helps set others on a constructive path, just because theyā€™ve moved beyond it.

Picked up all three of these right away, and Iā€™m so glad I did - the presets are all good, and some of them really are phenomenal!

No kidding! Itā€™s definitely been an interesting ride so far, just noodling and learning, with the manual/guide by my side.

So, I actually got impatient and ordered a used Deluge (for a great price) off Reverb instead of getting the new one - and it arrived Saturday! I absolutely have to second what youā€™ve said here - a lot of the Deluge just makes sense, to the point that Iā€™ll look something up in the manual only to be shocked at how obvious the shortcut for it is!

See, the problem with Whales Have Teeth is that he inspires you to buy an NTS-1, only to inspire you to GAS for a Minilogue XD a few days laterā€¦

I feel so bad cause i am pretty sure I am going to sell mine. I have just never found the time or inclination to learn it, and am very frustrated with the interface. I think the display screen is hot garbage and deeply frustrates me when im trying to browse files - which i do alot.

Its such a great platform in many ways, but I think ive come to the conclusion that its not for me, and i think i need something a little more ā€œtraditionalā€. Ive been looking at the MPC Live 2.

I will say that the boards of deluge stuff sounds fantastic, and the author did an amazing job of getting great sound out of a synth engine that most felt was sub par.

Looking for info on unquantized recording with the deluge. I understand that inputs are quantized to the current zoom level, but am curious if that means track loop length for live input is somehow impacted.

The workflow Iā€™m imagining is to have all tracks preloaded and set to maximum zoom, then to essentially move between tracks and record unquantized (or, more precisely, quantized to 256) patterns, move start and end points, etc, similar to jamming in Ableton by changing the midi assignment of your controller in real time.

I think your assumption that the recording is quantized to the current zoom level is wrong. You should be able specify quantization resolution. With one of the latest updates it goes to a ridiculous resolutions. Something like a 5000th step. You can fire sample so fast the give you an oscillating tone or really fine tune the quantization.
