its mostly same as old takt, except pattern chaining is simpler now - press and hold first pattern then select last one and hit play (might add amount of repeats for each pattern)

btn 12 is modifier

  • copy/pasting steps and patterns
  • hold while stopping sequencer will kill all sounds
  • hold while sequencer stopped to reset position to beginning

also you can reverse sample by swapping start/end time (@kasselvania)

yesss! iā€™ve been looking forward to this update.

thanks so much for your hard work @its_your_bedtime - this is super fun to play with :slight_smile:

some observations from last nightā€™s extended session:

  1. when switching between pages (note entry, sampler, pattern select) while the sequence is playing, the tempo would drift significantly. i would hear it slow waaayy down, and then when i switched back to the note entry page, it would speed waaayyy up until it caught up with where it should be and then it would stabilize.

  2. if i use the same sample on multiple tracks they will choke each-other in playback. ie. if the sample is playing on track 1, but then the same sample is triggered on track 2 - it will stop the sample playback on track 1. ideally the use of a second track would allow you to have a second layer of polyphony for that sample.

  3. having a finer resolution for parameters would be very helpful - especially for setting in/out points. perhaps tapping button 12 while over a parameter could toggle fine/coarse?

hope these observations are helpful. congrats on v2, and thanks again - your norns skills are massively appreciated :pray:

thanks for reports, ill take a look at drifting tempo!
2. thats an engine limitation unfortunately.
3. K2 is unused now, so think ill make it act as modifier for finer controls on all possible params. also most params values are rounded to fit them in tiles, so it may not display small changes

forgot to mention - pressing K3 when sample tile selected will open its settings on params page

you might be able to copy the sample and just name it foo2.wav, foo3.wav, etc. Just an idea

YAEH! Reverse is awesome! Didnā€™t realize it until you just said this. Kept looking for a representation of reverse in your screenshots, since I havenā€™t had a chance to play with it yet.

ah good to know. i suppose i can just manually load the same sample into two separate slots then.

a couple feature questions:

is clock swing possible?
is realtime note input something youā€™re considering? i could see a separate page for playing in notes on the grid - or even support for a usb midi keyboard for note entryā€¦

I was thinking that once the new norns update comes along and adds midi control over global params such as output/input/engine/sc etc, this would basically be one layer short of an octotrack!

edit:

  • fixed the polyphony issue, however if identical samples triggered on same step on different tracks - both of them will have parameter locks of the latter track.
  • samples ids are now in range of 1 - 100 (previously 0 - 99)

loving this so far - a great update - thankyou :slight_smile:
that screen is much quicker to move around and change values - really well designed
a quick issue Iā€™m having is i canā€™t get the ā€œload folderā€ bit to work - it remains blank.
I can load individual samples without issues.
Is there a song mode or a way to sequence patterns? I canā€™t find it on the pattern page like v1.
Also the randomise pitch/clear locks/random start value from v1 - is that still possible in v2?

how do you save the project in the new version? I canā€™t figure out how to get to the persistence screen mentioned in the v1 docs (holding k1 does not work for me)

hmmā€¦after loading a saved project, it seems like norns crashes when I try to save a sample (hit the floppy disk) on the sampling page.

also crashed while trying to load a sample already saved in norns.

a few other things Iā€™ve noticed:

  • if I change a sample for a track, itā€™s like the sample will be cycling (once it gets to the end, it keeps repeating)
  • if I go all the way to 0 on the END for a particular track, and try to go back to 100% length, itā€™s like only the transient of the sample will play, not the full length. (It seems liek maybe the start and end range isnā€™t updating to the new sampleā€™s length.

are you on latest ver? i think im fixed sample saving and play_mode thing - please make sure you are on latest version before posting bug reports, as i usually make a few commits a day while script is not finished.

also made a quick fix so sample length updates when sample changed and there is no lock on step, let me know if this works for you:)

I think I was, I had updated about 5 hours ago. Before posting any other quirks I see here, Iā€™ll update and test again.

The crashing thing is strange after norns crashed twice, it was totally fine after the rebootā€¦saving/loading samples, nothing broke it. Iā€™ll check on the sample length changes tomorrow.

Such a great tool, and the interface is incredible, thank you for it!

Hey! Super cool update, but the ā€œload folderā€ doesnt seem to work for me. Also once you press load folder and then want to load your saved preset it doesnt work, have to first press ā€œnewā€ to clear everything and then load your old preset.

the load folder works for me with the latest update from github - I used Cyberduck and rebooted.

update!

realtime note input (via grid or midi)

  • new grid page with linnstrument layout (thanks to @neauoire)
    • when page active, third button of control row acts as rec on/off toggle
  • midi device (1) can be used for note input, use CC#38 for rec toggle

elektron-style track scaling

1/8X, 1/4X, 1/2X, 3/4X, 1X, 3/2X and 2X. 

A setting of 1/8X will play back the pattern at one-eighth of the set tempo. 
3/4X plays the pattern back at three-quarters of the tempo; 
3/2X will play back the pattern twice as fast as the 3/4X setting. 
2X will make the pattern play at twice the BPM.
