Do you have an OB-4 already?

My personal one has not shipped yet…

So how does it sound though?

Cool. How does it sound?

As you know, they’re not going to use paper for a design like this. Probably no one offers a paper cone woofer efficient enough anyway. Still, I think puncture or deforming from bumping into something is definitely a risk, and there’s a reason portable stereos and location speakers for classical ensemble recording always have grilles. Those aren’t brought into parties either.

@Jensu

38 watts per channel is not a lot. KH 80 has 90w to the 4" woofer alone.

But the 1.7kg box itself is the main hindrance to natural bass at low volumes, and I would think the challenges of a reflex port that must be fit and tuned in a carriable box, not a proper cabinet. You’ll notice they don’t even put a +/- on the low end. That tells you who the market is.

We’ve all heard those sleek all-in-one home stereo/speaker systems with the drivers close together before, and they sound narrow and thin.

Just because you use good materials doesn’t mean the rules of loudspeaker design change, and it’s suddenly worth spending 600 dollars for a nice boombox.

The knob is made of a special space-age alloy that adds a resonant warmth to the entire enclosure, and the case has been fabricated from a single sheet of heat-forged monomers designed to emulate cases of a much larger size. Preliminary assessments suggest that the assembled unit has the capacity to violate three separate basic laws of physics while still adhering to the basic principles of Barnum’s Third Law.

Well I’ll be. My mistake!

Well, really everything can be compared … And in fact I think almost everything should be compared (especially if we talk about devices or tools). I don’t think there is anything wrong with someone buying a Maserati. What’s more, if there were no different types of cars in the world, everything would be very boring and stupid. All I’m saying is that probably to go for a walk in the country, go shopping or take the children to school, maybe the best car is not a Maserati.
In any case, a Maserati will always be a high-end car. The problem comes when you compare, which I insist I think you have to do, your modest car bought at a Maserati price with a real one, and you discover what you really have.

I have had 2 OP-1s. I sold the first one because I was not convinced by its digital sound and with an annoying noise always in the background. I bought the second one thinking “I want to be” cool “again” … For me, in sound terms the comparison is clear.

The unit I had was out of battery and no power cord in sight, long story, so I could only check out the physical form factor. I’m going to the official Stockholm launch on Saturday though.

I think it’s funny that people on here are using the term hipster as a negative term when you on a forum that’s main focus is modular synthesizers and program your own little box to make it bend at your will. You should think about yourself if you think being called a hipster is anything negative or name calling in general only bothers the people using it not the people you are calling names. Call me a hipster and I’m honored to think you think that I am cool!

Hipster is a relative term. “I’m cool and genuine, the guy just a bit more down the line is trying too hard.”

But I don’t disagree with some of the sentiments of how this product is advertised and put forth. It feels like a lifestyle device. Almost like a Supreme Jacket but in BoomBox form. It might not be for everyone, but its catnip to those who dig that sorta stuff. No judgement on my part for whoever is interested in the device!

I think that there’s a prevailing school of thought here: TE has the power and chops to make cool cool stuff! I actually purposefully mentioned the Ortho controller and the PO series because those were really interesting and conceptually strong devices! This is… Not that… Its treading old ground and advertising itself in weird ways. Like, what is that announcement video? Its just “look at our boombox with ‘magical’ properties in a couple of tabluaes. We are hinting at Japanese marketing aesthetic! Mahogany desk. Glass of scotch…”

But listen, I’m crotchety! I wanted something new to drool over! Instead I’ve just decided to sell stuff to fund a Pam’s new workout. Haha

Everyone is someone else’s hipster.

you are totally right, you can compare anything. the OP-1 was far more expensive than that the rectangular cement brick of a similar size that I bought earlier this summer when doing a project in my yard. the OP-1 is probably way more fun to travel with than the brick… but the brick does a much better job holding my water pump off the ground so it doesn’t sit in the rain water that pools up around the foundation of my garage. The brick doesn’t require recharging like the OP-1 does. Neither of them will make me cool again. I’ll have to wait for TE to release their time machine for that… which will undoubtedly disappoint everyone before they even get to try it.

my comment about not comparing the OP-1 to anything else wasn’t a literal exercise. it was more about there being nothing quite like it out there.

For me, the trigger that led me to sell my last OP-1 was to verify that with the OP-1 I spent about 4 or 5 hours a month playing it at a price of € 1,222, while every day I use an average of 2-3 hours my ER-301 at a price of € 800. At the sound and price level, things were clear for me.

But the wonderful thing about this world is that we are different and have varying needs. For me TE they have deservedly earned a place in the world of design with their innovative products, and I will be looking forward to seeing what they create next, although I probably won’t buy the ticket for the show.

“At the sound and price level, things were clear for me.” - I think that is the problem with this topic - people trying to say that it is objectively bad when all this bad and good judgements are purely subjective thing. Of course it is totally cool to discuss good and bad things but unless you remember that they are bad and good for you and not objectively bad and good, until then all things are pretty religious.
But I think this is a really entertaining topic as well! The Radio of Enlightenment!

Yes, I totally agree. We always think that the world is just as we see with our own eyes.

Ummm, @bobbcorr , I was really on board with the graphic until I got to the part where there were “others” who seemingly also had an orbit? Could you revise and replace with “stuff not about me but that probably should be” and resend?

Some things are objectively bad and this is one of them.

I mean Homer’s car is an objectively bad design, even if it’s subjectively beautiful to him.

Well that depends on how YOU (and everyone who agree with you) measure the goodness (or the “CARness” of the car), pretty nice and hip for me:)
