I came here because I was having similar issues with the Hermod. Worked out of the box with the Hermod and now I’m not getting anything in the Hermod from the Z for MIDI. Not sure what to do here tbh.
for folks having trouble with midi and this latest firmware, i’m experiencing the same issues when using the Z with my (original) op-lab.
i’m on the op-z beta testing group and have reported this bug to the developers.
That’s good to hear. I’m using the mutant brain and whenever I try and move a sequence up or down an octave the z stops sending midi information.
Thanks for confirming this - seems logical that there has to be something about that dongle opposed to a straight cable. I somehow hoped lightning got more mature over time.
I haven’t tried host yet but I will give it a go if i can dig up a usb-c hub, not sure if it will improve things though…
OP-Z sequencing endorphin.es shuttle system. free jazz in C lydian. Percussion is sampled Metasonix D1000.
I like the opz better than the op1, and I agree with what many people have already said about the sequencer: it really is super cool.
OPZ for the drums on this one.
Well, that was really cool!
Thanks! They are a really powerful pairing. And that was just with MIDI pitch and gate. Still have 14 more mappings available on the shuttle control, as well as 4 CV/Gate sends from the oplab module. So many integration points…
I’ve had a weird and easily workaroundable issue with the usb audio sampler connection on windows. If I try to include the OP-Z as part of an “aggregate device” via ASIO4ALL, I get an error about sampling rates in ableton. If I remove it from the aggregate device, no issues. If I connect the OP-Z to ableton as a device on its own, no issues. So, like I said…easy to work around, but I had a vision where the OPZ would be part of an aggregate device with my other two usb sound cards…which can’t happen (yet?)
Hey, do you know if something is in the works at the moment? I can’t get midi out to work with newest firmware.
I don’t have any news to share. I reloaded the previous firmware release to regain midi functionality.
Thanks for response! At least midi clock seems to work (but not using cv pal :|) so for now I will just use keystep as a very big op-z->cv sync converter
Sampling or Midi is an epic tradeoff
I’m trying to get my OPZ to sequence my norns by way of midi, any chance you can share your working midi config. I tried and got spotty results a few firmwares ago and it’d be nice to use a config that’s proven in the field.
This is what I’ve tried unsuccessfully:
* Channel 1 to active track * Mini in enable * Midi out enable * Clock in enable * Clock out enable * Alt Program Change * Midi Echo
UPDATE: disregard, the above setup worked for me to send midi on v1.2.5, I just needed to ensure the appropriate midi device was chosen on the appropriate port in the device menu under system.
Midi out is still working fine for me on the latest firmware. Was using my op-z to trigger drum tracks on norns yesterday.
Been wondering about this for a while… why are step components only on tracks 1-8? Would love to have it on tracks 9-16 if I was triggering external midi on those tracks D:
Yeah -, MIDI aside, whenever I get into a pattern I tend to forget this and try to add a component to the performance or tape track. Since those tracks in particular can create some quite distinctive effects, it’d be really nice to be able to throw in some variation this way instead of having to use long track divisions, where you can’t access the full range of the step sequencer (an alternative would be adding sequencer pages for longer divisions, similar to Elektron’s approach, which I’ve seen requested in a few places).
Seems like an ideal candidate for an update, though, so fingers crossed.
Damn sequencer pages (ala electron) or zoom in zoom out (ala deluge) would be nice I keep wishing for this feature.
I guess the capacity must be there - the sequencer certainly has the resolution to support four pages of 16 steps. But I haven’t fully thought through the UI implications - you’d need clear and easy ways of switching pages and identifying which page you’re on, at least. And also the OP-Z would need to support four times as many spark components (x3) for the first eight tracks, which I suppose soon adds up…
One of the marvels of the OP-Z is how navigable it is on its own, considering what it can do. That must be a fine line to tread, and all these ideas that seem great to us might well bring it crashing down, either in terms of processing power or usability.
All of these suggestions are fantastic, but honestly, on the sequencing side of things, I’m already so impressed with the OP-Z and love its unique strengths. If I were to task for anything, it would be more access to synth parameters (so they don’t all sound so same-y), stereo delay, and a better reverb. As it stands, I usually end up writing ideas on the OP-Z and then porting them out to hardware units for better sound.
