My 1510 usually gets packed with my octatrack, digitone, and Norns for carry on

For myself:

  • Laptop
  • Mouse
  • Novation Launchpad Mini [technically I don’t really need it, but it does make performances easier]
  • Zoom H1 field recorder [since my work is heavily based on field recordings]

As much as I like modular, for me it’d be just a laptop, a decent set of headphones, and my Olympus digital recorder. I don’t like the idea of traveling with a lot of gear, and I’m happy enough making laptop music for a few weeks.

Here’s my anti-laptop mafia setup

Er301 in a zizhou case.

Make self generating patches and you can record the outputs directly to another track on the er301.

could you elaborate on this? The only thing relevant looking I found was an article for DIYing something like this via Make.

Thanks!

There are a few kinds on the market, usually listed as “in ear binaural” microphones.

I have a set of the Roland CS-10EM and they’re ok. Definitely less discreet if you put the foam windscreens on, but kind of unavoidable if you’re outdoors at all.

I am planning to travel the majority of the summer, so I have been planning out the ultimate portable set up as I will be flying, catching trains, and boats all over the US. I plan to fit norns/grid/op-1/ a very small speaker in a pelican 1400.

Bare minimum? Just a laptop.

TidalCycles (free!!), Ableton, Max? I have plenty to play around with. I’ll second @samarobryn on the mouse, since Ableton and Max really wear my index finger out on just a trackpad…

I’ve been trying to bring Grid, Arc and a NanoKontrol Studio if I can. Norns seems like a good candidate to join this camp. A Keystep seems like a bridge too far for me as far as flying with just a carry-on and personal item goes.

Oh gosh I’ll have to look up the brand - they basically sit in your ears with the capsule pointing out, sorta faux-binaural except that one’s actual head doesn’t stay still, especially while filming / walking! But I can tape or clip them onto things as well. Will post when I find the info. They’re great. I also have a tiny little preamp that gives them a bit more dynamic range but they work fine with plug in power.

my travel setup is ableton, these two m4l devices, and Operator

synecdoche turns my entire laptop keyboard into something like earthsea, and then spondee maps four parameters to different sections of my mousepad and I map those to operator, so basically I can play my laptop like a synth. this combined with multi-tracking, FX stuff, with weird max devices, and LFOs in ableton is super deep tbh. made some of my best stuff recently while traveling with this.

it will also be cool to see what people come up with running engines into mlr on norns now that that’s possible. just norns is technically more minimal than just laptop >:( .

Wait what? How do you do that with mlr v2?

I like this topic!

I’ve never really made electronic music with just a computer, always using external instruments and hardware and just using a DAW to record, layer, edit, and mix. So I really wouldn’t want to go somewhere with just a laptop!

I’ve recently been asked to play in Mongolia as part of an environmental mission:

I’ll be playing along with 50 other artists, likely every day, and the performances will also be recorded and released as an album at the end, so I really want it to be something like what I have been doing under my artist name, and can’t pass up such an opportunity to refine my modular performance chops, so I’ll be putting together an Intellijel 7u that will be played as an entirely stand alone instrument:

I’ll bring a grid and 16n, but that’s it. It likely still looks pretty big to some, but I’ll be able to play full voiced music solo, or be able to jam with others.

Also, this is something I took on a trip out of town over new years:

norns + grid + Digitakt + 4 track cassette recorder, which doubled as a mixer + Tascam recorder. I felt pretty inspired by it! I feel like norns is a no brainer since it’s very small and runs on batteries. The tape deck is perhaps a bit bulky, but you could easily get a smaller one. Great to get away from the modular from time to time, though to me something like this works for writing and recording, but less so performing.

Just booked myself in for a 10 day boat trip in June, so this is a very relevant thread to me :D. I was thinking digitone & norns/grid. Perhaps I should just bring a notebook and properly decompress though…

Laptop, Grid, Babyface, field recorder & Eigenharp Pico. Will add a Norns to that list soon.

norns, grid, and a lunchbox modular rig—additionally, an electric violin makes a great alternative to guitar!

edit—pen and staff paper is never a bad idea either.
