Glad to read this thread! I was just thinking of creating one for the MPC1000 then I came here and found this one

My MPC 1000 has been collecting dust for 12 years but yesterday I installed the demo of JJOS2XL. Like the others said, it really is a new device with this custom firmware.

The only thing “missing” would be “probability / conditions” maybe ?

  • Do you know if there’s a way to toggle automatic preview of the samples when in “Load mode” instead of having to hit “play” each time ?

I’m trying to solve an issue with the CF card right now. I got a 16GB CF card and I filled it with thousands of NI samples from Battery and Maschine, unfortunately, the MPC is having difficulties loading the samples, it’s very laggy with this card, it sometimes freezes for 3 or 5 seconds each time I navigate to a different folder.

I even bought a small software that converts audio files to 44.1 16bits mono (while keeping the folder structure) and adjusts and trim the filenames but this doesn’t fix the problem.

  • What kind of CF card do you use with the MPC 1000 ? Is 16GB too much even with JJOS ?

  • Has anyone done the SSD mod ? Is it worth it ?

I’d also like to hear people’s experiences with storage on the 1K. I just got a 2GB CF card (maximum capacity stated in manual), but it looks like people have had success with larger SD cards and an SD→CF adapter?

I’m currently testing with a 32GB Sandisk Extreme (160mbps) and I have better results than with the regular 16GB Sandisk (50mbps) I was using earlier. But still… moving between folders takes a while and previewing/audition samples is not very straightforward. It takes some time to trigger or it simply doesn’t work. Even with very small samples, 100k or so… Definitely not the normal behavior I believe. Perhaps I need to re-install JJOS from scratch, idk.

I would have tried with a smaller Cf card, 32GB can seem a bit extreme hehe but it’s all I have, it’s the Cf card of my Octatrack. I simply converted all the samples to 16bits and trimmed the filenames to 16 chars as recommended.

Uff, you really make me happy that I still have my mpc1000 and that I should really properly sit down again with it.
I had a Mpc One briefly, but moved it on, too much of the new stuff I personally do not need such as the instruments, effects were quite good though…
I probably would have kept a Mpc Live though but felt limited by the lack of outputs on the Mpc one.
I traded the Mpc One for an octatrack, which I rather hate/love.

Feeling a bit silly now for just getting a 2gig when I could obviously have gone much higher…

I don’t know my way around Ableton at all, but based on the name, I’d hazard a guess that it is
Last time I used it, it did have the limitation that the patterns had to be in 4/4. But I believe you can also fudge this with the sequence editor (i.e., convert a 7/8 pattern to 4/4 by appending an empty 1/8th note)

I have a cf > sd adpter which goes to a sd > microsd adapter and have a 256gb microsd connected to it. This is classic and I think most of 1k users use this way.
I’m expecting to receivep a 512gb microsd to try but it’s overkill anyhow .
I would love to try the hdd though if it’s faster.

i remember i had a classic hdd on the 1000 (40gb iirc), or i’m mistaking it for the 2500?

The 1000 does take an hdd. I just dont know if its faster than the cf and if it can hold the same capacity.

I need to try with one of these CF to Micro SD adapter.

Do you think any cheap SD to CF adapter will work ? Or is there a specific brand ? And for the Micro SD card, any particular speed ?

Obviously, there’s something the MPC doesn’t like with the “Extreme” Sandisk CF Cards. The structure of the memory in these modern cards perhaps, I have no idea. When it simply doesn’t freeze the loading times are awful. I’m almost ready to buy a password for JJOS but not until I fix this Memory card issue ^^

I have an MPC500 and I used it for its sound, I used to sample a sound from a synth or a softsynth or resample something and play it on MPC, the sound is bigger than original and I love it… sometimes I used the Sherman Filterbank in flat position to get a similar result.
IMHO the MPC1000 is the best choice

Any cf to sd would do. Im not really sure if cf to micro sd exists. I’m using a delock cf to sd adapter, then using a cf to microsd. For the microsd I’m not really sure, a cf card would max out at 140MB/s if I remember correctly but I dont know if this speed is used by the mpc. If it is though then a faster microsd would benefit the mpc as the cheap ones average at 40-80MB/s .

Although I have to admit all this is tried under JJOS. I cant speak for akai os with certainty.

i’m really glad this thread popped up. i got a used 1000 at a pawn shop for $250 many years ago and have barely used it. every time i think of selling it i realize that I really need to put the time in to learn it. right now it has a free JJOS on it (i can’t remember which one). can anyone point me to some good resources for tutorials … when i looked for some useful youtube videos several years ago they were kind of all over the place and didn’t really cover the basics of even simple things like loading/saving and so on.

Thanks! Apparently yes it exists. I just ordered this micro sd to cf adapter. Will report back

I don’t want to be that RTFM guy but honestly think that the JJOS manual is decent.

One neat trick is to check the feature list and it will sometimes have a “refer to manual” section to guide you in the right direction.

EDIT: Also, It looks like (from this thread) that there are a lot of jjos users! I can’t speak for everyone but I’m happy to help if you get stuck.

Yep, the manual can be a little cryptic but it’s all in there. Just read through with the MPC in arms’ reach and a clear goal in mind.

wow

these responses are incredible!
so glad everybody is comin out of the woodwork to share things

my three line history w/ akai:
seeing an mpc in a 90s music video made me wanna produce electronic stuff
got a 2000xl few years ago but sold it soon after to pay for something else
now learning mpc live (and struggling)

im finding using the resampling type of sp404 method on it is amazing…
no sequencer…
just record your output and play pads…
so much fun!

yes! used similar approach until i figure out how to lay down patterns with it

the sequencer doesn’t agree with my sense of timing so i’m hand playing straight into other samplers or my daw

i dropped a huge HD in there… and ALL the samples i own on the machine… on the couch chilling and chopping.

did the same with all my sample packs
and the battery makes mobile jamming so fun and relaxing

crazy amaount of power in something rechargeable like this

the biggest advice i can give you is this:
hit the WINDOW button on everything you see in every page! you’ll discover a lot of features just wandering around the gui and hitting the magic button

Much like many others, I am very glad to see this thread! Was very close to making one too but don’t have much to share yet.

I recently got my third MPC. I started with a 2000 which was super fun but lacked features, upgraded to a 2500 and stupidly sold it when my workflow changed for a while. But I managed to pick up a bargain 1000 with JJOS 2XL on it and it’s great so far. I’m already finding it fun as a sketchpad for ideas that I would normally lean to my computer for, and also as a more traditional sampler than the octatrack allowing for much more polyphony.

I’m curious to see what people are doing with their MPCs and if any aren’t necessarily the traditional uses (such as hip-hop, house, techno etc). Nothing against the predominant uses for MPCs, just that they are incredibly versatile and interested in how people are exploiting this versatility!
