Does anyone use their 303 via MIDI, as a drum machine, effectively?

I’ve just picked up a Beatstep Pro to use with my MS-20 Mini and iOS synth apps (via a Vermona Retroverb) to give me a mono/poly combination and was thinking that the drum channel could be a perfect way to incorporate the 303 into the workflow. Has anyone had experience of using one that way? Would/does it work?

I trigger the 303 via Midi. Usually with the Digitakt. Not for drum sounds. But that shouldn’t really matter I guess. It works really well and is also an easy way to keep loops in time instead of fiddling with the start and end points.

Ah, that’s beautiful to hear! Thanks :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh, seriously? I didn’t realise that was the case. It seems like it’s going to do more than just work, but actually improve things quite dramatically!

I’m exceptionally excited about the prospect of this combination now! With a bit of luck my BSP will arrive in the next day or 2, at which point I’ll become a recluse for a few days!

I’ve been using modular with an sp404 for 6 years and I’ll never let the 404 go.

beat step pro is great for 303/404 midi sequencing

Does anyone have any info or links to discussions on Fumitake Tamura’s process. Particularly interested in the gear and process used in this album with Dakim (Mudai Version). Both are known to use the Roland SP’s.

I don’t but I’d also love to know. That album is superb.

Found something on Ableton Haven’t had time to read it though.

No mention of equipment in that article unfortunately.

by coincidence i was gonna email him about something this morning so just added your question to my message

if he’s ok with it i’ll share his response

based on past convos i’d guess it was a combination of tools (like many of us) and might include ableton, sp, and qubit nebulae

not sure if he still had the nebulae when these beats were made tho

I appreciate that. I could definitely see eurorack, laptop and an SP being used.

I was never a fan of these machines from a use perspective, but I swear I can hear their particular time stretch/compress algorithm all over Pinata and other recent Madlib releases. :+1:

Not unless he made it 9 years ago

ā€œThe last seven-eight years, everything’s been iPad. I never had great equipment; I always used low-budget stuff. I’m down with Flying Lotus, Ras G, all those type of dudes. We keep it minimal.ā€ - Madlib

To be fair, Pinata was wrapped seven years ago (time flies…) and some of the tracks go back to 2010-11. But yeah, fair enough re: the newer stuff.

ā€œbadā€ news: no sp anywhere on that album
good news: if youre anything like me you’ll probably love the answer even more (& might inspire you to rethink your approach)

setup was a combination of daw and mpc60

used logic back then for almost all editing and mixing (mpc only to make materials, prep some samples)

after that album he switched to protools

not to deify any peer but

i really see him as one of the greats of our generation…to get an answer so quickly on something rather trivial shows how much of a generous chill guy he is

Thats interesting. I use my 2kxl in much the same way i suppose. Its just alot more work to get everything that dirty granted he used a 60 but its still pretty amazing to produce that with just an mpc60 and a DAW. I have to wonder if any of the source material was modular synth based. His more experimental stuff definitely makes me contemplate the process and thats something that draws me to an artists work. Thanks for the insight.

Heres one where he is definitely using an SP.

Agreed. I don’t think recognising outstanding talent is deifying.

I’m with @persy regarding his work making me contemplate his process. I tend to see that as a signifier of artists who are on a different level.
