The Meet Maude is my favourite analogue delay by far.

So much character.

It embraces the idiosyncrasies of old BBD delays, rather than trying to iron them out.

The random modulation is also really nice.

Make sure to check out their Shallow Water as well (a variant of the Meet Maude really, with lower delay times for chorus/vibrato).

The Strymon Volante has a magnetic drum mode, which I think is based on the Echorec?

So I’ve been messing around with the sample scrubbing algorithm on my Disting and I love the sound of it. It sounds far more tape-like than any tape delay simulator I’ve heard and I’m wondering how exactly this method of playback works and if there are any delays based on that process.

advice on smaller alternatives to Rainmaker? even pedal

looking for a stereo multitap delay for looong delay and ambient machine
usually my RainPatch is 4-6-9-12 panned with lowpass/highpass and super long tempo (as long as rainmaker can get)

I don’t have first hand experience, but the Source Audio Nemesis seems to be a favorite for specific delay algorithms.

Maybe the empress echosystem for pedal form? I can’t imagine anything as complex as rainmaker, but there are at least a few modes on the echosystem that are multitap.

The Eventide H9 has a tons of extremely configurable multitap modes, many of which offer various types of MIDI sync and a wide variety of control parameters. UltraTap is extremely flexible, for instance.

Bringing up an old comment here but was there anything you got out of the El Capistan that you can’t replicate with the Volante?

I’m afraid I haven’t had enough time with it to make a fully informed reply. Maybe speed of operation? I’ve been touring my day job the last few months. I’m afraid I won’t have time to go deep with Volante until next Summer…

I bought an Electro Harmonix Canyon second hand, and it is a lovely little delay pedal. It packs a lot of functionality into a compact enclosure. The emulations aren’t going to fool anyone (the DMM emulation doesn’t really sound like a DMM to me), but that doesn’t mean they don’t sound nice. The Shimmer+Octave modes sound really great (and would be good on Synths to I imagine).

I also like that it has ā€˜hidden’ parameters (just hold down the tap button for 1 second) that are saved for each mode. The looper is nice and simple and works great (you can’t have the looper and a delay mode active at the same time though as per Timeline etc.).

Hi all. I’m in the market for a hardware digital delay that has a great stereo spread. I’d love something that can produce interesting rhythmic sequences in stereo. Sound toys is scratching the itch within the DAW, but I love committing to a sound and working with hardware.

The three leading candidates at the moment are:

  1. OTO BIM (thx to @scttcmpbll’s lovely record ā€œstillnessā€ which you should listen to immediately)
  2. Strymon DIG (sounds wonderful, live the golden ratio mode, but worried that its ping pong pattern is not terribly interesting)
  3. Meris Polymoon (sounds great. Worried that it goes places I don’t necessarily need this box to go)

I’d love to hear recent experiences with any of these (I’ve read this entire thread, FWIW). And I’d also be open to a similarly priced rack unit, as this will be a studio solution.

And just so I’m clear, I’m not looking for a euro rack module… or am I? Feel free to persuade.

I know it’s not on your list but you should check out the Boss DD-500’s pattern mode. It’s a hell of a lot of fun to play with. 16 taps that you can control the level and panning of individually, then adjust the total length in musical divisions all with MIDI sync and CC control.

I have a Space echo I restored, a few stomps: time-line and Belle epoch, a ton of vsts, and in euro I have a magneto and this crazy thing I just released.

Its fun for processing, even when you don’t want echo but want tape mechanics sound.

I have a DIG and it’s great. The golden ratio division is indeed lovely. Don’t forget you can also set each delay to be non-synchronized. There aren’t many controls, but it is voiced in a very pleasant ā€˜early digital’ way (it reminds me of my Korg SDD1000).

I also had a TimeLine which I soon got rid off. I think if you are going down the hardware route, immediacy beats all, as with the TimeLine I would be menu diving thinking ā€˜this would be much easier using Echoboy :smile:’.

I’ve also noticed they come up for sale quite often on guitar forums (maybe as stereo/pingpong and dual delays aren’t typical guitar pedal-board applications).

This is why I got rid of my El Capistan. I loved the secondary features but not being able to access them immediately was really frustrating

Don’t forget the Strymon Volante with it’s selectable playback and feedback heads, and individual stereo panning for each head.

@smbols I am a big Boss fan boy. I supposed I had skipped this pedal because I have a DD-20 and figured it was voiced similarly (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing). Will revisit, because pattern mode sounds like exactly what I am after.

@mode.analogue @AIsynthesis tape delay is the shit, and I’ve definitely got my eye on one of those Australian units above!

@Ithacus from what I’ve heard, I just love the way it’s voiced. I have two other Strymon pedals, and think that they are amazing company. I didn’t realize you could decouple the delays. That could get interesting.

@wm.wragg am going to look into the head panning. That’s neat.
