Thanks very much for this

Been revisiting the DK during shelter in place. Forgot how much I love this little box of awe.

Bumping this from a little way back since I’m getting more curious about this crazy banana synth. I have a couple questions

  1. Are all sounds from the double-knot?
  2. are they recorded straight off the main out, or did you do some multi-tracking?

Cheers, I really enjoyed this jam. I’ve been jamming with my benjolin in the background while working from home this week and digging the weird, analog, turn it on and twist some knobs aspects of it. The double-knot could be a lot of fun in that same way.

I bought a used V1 a few months ago and highly recommend it for the reasons you mentioned. I love a seemingly simple device that contains such a wide range of possibilities. Incredibly deep and organic sounds. The @Allieway_Audio overview video contains a ton of helpful info if you haven’t seen it?

I love the DK as a stand alone synth, but I did just get a custom lowgain 1/8" > banana converter box with resistors on half of the inputs to prevent negative voltages. Last night I ran Zellen via crow into the double knot for pitch and clock, really fun.

Thanks - I think I’m going to go for it. In a bit of an ironic twist, my comments about just turning it on and twisting knobs were in contrast to norns / grid. Still early days for me with that combo, but I’m struggling to find inspiration with it. I really like zellen, it’s a wonderful script. It’s fun to try different patterns to see if I can get one to repeat (or at least play for a really long time). I can imagine it would be fun to sequence external stuff with it. I should give that a try, but most of my other gear already has a built-in sequencer (elektron).

I’ve definitely had days where I struggled with Norns, just things not talking to each other or an update breaking something. But I love having such easy and mostly playable access to complex sequencing or sampling/processing. I also really, like unhealthily, love the Crow i2c > Just Friends combo. I’ve been having trouble patching anything else up for a few weeks.

Cool, glad you are enjoying. Yes, all sounds from DK recorded live into Ableton, no multitracking. Lorre Mill Double Knot > ableton w/arturia tape delay and valhalla reverb. The DK is a REALLY cool instrument, especially if you have any other banana gear.

Do you have a link to that? I have the standard banana to mini jack but no idea if it has resistors! Thanks for the tip.

It’s the Lowgain UTL-1 on this page, but I chatted with Logan and he suggested the resistor mod. Buchla stuff should be fine but I think Lorre Mill sdoesn’t want to see any negative voltages.

ah gotcha, the UTL-1 is the one I have. so you did the mod yourself? thanks for replying

Nope I had Logan do it as part of the order. Probably not hard though?

Dropping by this thread to say that I received a Double Knot last week and am in love with it. Every sound it makes is exciting, an abstract rhythmic playground. And it sounds SO BIG!

I was lucky enough to score that baby and I just finished pimping it with some tasty Davies knobs!

I should add that it was made possible thanks to Thonk new brass casing adapters for alpha pots.

The double knot uses reversed D-shaft pot which makes it a bit more difficult to customise, but now issue is solved, highly recommend!

I’ve thought about custom knobs for my cocoquantus, but the same issue of upside-down d-shaft pots stalled that. Glad to hear that the thonk adapters will open up some options, should I continue down the path. BTW - awesome looking double knot. Nice pull!

Is this a custom enclosure? It’s beautiful.

Yes and no, the story is it was a one-off special edition that Lorre mill put on his shop for a huge price like 10000$ and nobody was buying it, I remember he once bumped the price to something even more ridiculous. It was there for weeks so one day I decided to put it in the cart to check the price was indeed legit only to realize it was the same price as any other regular DK -> insta-buy!

Anyone else here not quite achieving ‘relabi’ with this relabi groovebox? I can get it to sound chaotic and can have it stay in a particular groove, but, particularly compared to plumbutter, it is few and far between, the times that I have actually gotten it to Play the “music of the self erasing pulse”

Patch examples would be awesome, I’ve had this for years and love the sound of it but I’ve always kind of fucked at loving it because of how difficult it is to get it to do what it was allegedly designed as.

That brings back so many memories of one summer I spent basically playing guitar with my friend in his basement all day, watching Beyond Belief and Adult Swim. I must have been 15. Sorry, OT, I just used to love that show and now I want to sample it. Thanks!
