The Genre of Broken Sound (Disquiet Junto Project 0274)

Disquiet Junto Project 0274: Broken Sound
The Assignment: Record a piece of music in the genre called “broken sound.”

Step 1: Imagine there is a genre called “broken sound.” Not “broken beats,” not “sound art,” but “broken sound.”

Step 2: Imagine what might characterize the “broken sound” genre.

Step 3: Create an original piece of music in the genre called “broken sound.”

Five More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: If you hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to include the project tag “disquiet0274″ (no spaces) in the name of your track. If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to my locating the tracks and creating a playlist of them.

Step 2: Upload your track. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your track.

Step 3: In this thread at llllllll.co please consider posting your track.

Step 4: Annotate your track with a brief explanation of your approach and process.

Step 5: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: This project’s deadline is 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, April 3, 2017. This project was posted in the morning, California time, on Thursday, March 30, 2017.

Length: The length is entirely up to the participant.

Title/Tag: When posting your track, please include “disquiet0274″ in the title of the track, and where applicable (on SoundCloud, for example) as a tag.

Upload: When participating in this project, post one finished track with the project tag, and be sure to include a description of your process in planning, composing, and recording it. This description is an essential element of the communicative process inherent in the Disquiet Junto. Photos, video, and lists of equipment are always appreciated.

Download: It is preferable that your track is set as downloadable, and that it allows for attributed remixing (i.e., a Creative Commons license permitting non-commercial sharing with attribution).

Linking: When posting the track online, please be sure to include this information, as well as the identity of the source track that yours accompanies:

For this week’s project I tried to ‘break’ the formal elements of music, i.e. pitch, duration, rhythm, loudness, timbre, sonic texture and spatial location (there are many other definitions, but I went with this one!)

I used the MIDI notes of the first four bars of a very famous, slow piano tune and…

  1. Increased the tempo to 180bpm (rhythm, duration)
  2. Used Logic’s midi humanize function with extreme settings (duration, rhythm, loudness)
  3. Quantized the notes to a major rather than a minor scale (pitch) and moved any overlapping midi notes as a result of step 2 to arbitrary notes (pitch)
  4. Bounced this file down, time-stretched it by a factor of four or so (pitch, duration, timbre and more!)
  5. Played it back with sends to a pitch-shifter delay (pitch, rhythm), granulizer (duration) and a reverser (sonic texture).
  6. On the master bus, I went for a very non piano / concert hall feel. There was a wandering, spacey reverb, tons of compression and I squashed the track with a limiter (loudness, sonic texture, spatial location, etc.)

Here’s the final, very broken, rather messy result:

Ps. Kudos to anyone who can recognise the original track that I started the journey with!

Good evening,

It’s not going to be long now, till Wikipedia dedicates a page(or 3) to me, the inventor of the Broken Sound-genre!

-I took all my Junto’s of this year(calculated that the average time of 1 Junto is 2.51min)
-Loaded all these Junto’s in Audacity(brought all of them to 2.51min)
-Est voila… a new genre is born!

Hi,
this is my attempt:
I simply imported an .exe file as raw audio in audacity, then added delay and reverb.
It’s really broken!

Hello,

This is my first Disquiet Junto, though I have been meaning to participate for quite some time. I’ve been quite uninspired recently and feeling like I can’t finish music anymore. For this track I took the approach of trying to break my usual process in order to break the sound, and break myself out of the habits that I think are making me feel so uninspired. Listening back, I wish I hadn’t overdriven the bass frequencies so much in the first quarter but I guess it adds to the whole broken thing.

Recorded three times OP-1 through strymon´s"Big Sky" pedal with CUBASIS on IPad. I´m still impressed/influenced from great Tim Hecker Show last Sunday in Berlin, Kraftwerk!!!

Disquiet Junto Project 0274.
It’s broken. Took a broken synth (Fortune Cookie), added some broken female lyrics on top, earned Broken Sound aka Raum 2.

Hello Junto,
The Broken Sound Movement began originally as assignment given by the enigmatic Marc Weidenbaum to his infamous “Junto” in early 2017. The assignment soon became the soundtrack to a world wide political/philosophical movement with the motto “If it ain’t broke, break that bitch!”. In no way a call to Nihilism, instead it was a call to understand the true brokenness of all things. That all things are not just temporal but also really useless. The Broken Sound movement held no higher power or ruling social class responsible for this “brokenness” but instead celebrated the broken and cast out objects as mirrors that reflected the “hot holy mess” of humanity. Perfection as a goal wasn’t just laughable but something to be ridiculed as “pie in the sky”. Proponents were known to have large gatherings where people would bring perfectly good consumer goods and destroy them in large hydraulic presses after which they destroyed the hydraulic presses. The movement never really gained much momentum as most people thought of the movement as “Broken Brainers”. The movement finally died out except for a “lunatic fringe” led by the zealot Les Squeegee. He famously ordered his followers to smash his penis in a press at which point everybody decided that things had gotten way out of hand and went home and resumed a consumer based existence.

Later, Les

Something about the grainy crunch of my circuit bent Speak and Spell suggested broken sound to me.

At first I thought I’d record a take and take samples, then I reconsidered. What if broken sound doesn’t roll that way?

broke the sound in different ways but wanted it to still retain some cohesion
the beat is from https://aiexperiments.withgoogle.com/drum-machine/view/ which is huge fun to play with. i kept the pattern the same and clicked shuffle a lot for different sounds. except when it got to ~1:50 and that great beat comes from nowhere… was hard to change it then…
the synth is crystal, contorted with lots of lfo modulation. broken further by saving as an 8kbps mp3 , then fed thru a lot of guitar distortion. same bpm as the beat
(the original synth sound is still low down in the mix too)

Sound:

  1. vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a person’s or animal’s ear.
  2. sound produced by continuous and regular vibrations, as opposed to noise.
Together this gives us, “Vibrations that travel through the air or another medium produced by continuous and regular vibrations, as opposed to noise.”

Broken sound would be a genre where sound is interrupted by noise. Instead of this being a competition between the two or one getting in the way of the other, this piece has the two working together.

In 1976 I created a number of piece of music using the only tools available to me at the time, two reel-to-reel tape recorders. Rory Tory is the only piece that survives today and is a little over 45 minutes in length. I have taken a section near the end of the piece and given it accompaniment by flute, two clarinets, horn and bassoon.

I’m finishing these commission mostly electric basses , it’s a trilogy but today I recorded a 4th part for this junto, a solo bass performance, and then “broke” the low notes that populate the pauses with extreme tremolos, chopper, skidder and regular tremolos at hard settings (square wave, loads of drive and saturation)
I love the way those tremolos, used in this “chop down” way, break the decay of the notes and make the soft vanish of music sound beautifully wrong.

Added huge reverbs and wah wah on the reverb.
Broken ambient bass.

Nightwatch IV: Something’s Broken.
Solo electric bass performance by d.d,
treatments: reverb, tremolos, chopper, vibrolo, granulator, wah-wah

Sheesh, March going on April already and this is my first Junto contribution of the year!
Busy times- my mom and aunt are in town visiting from Canada, asleep in the other room, we are going to Kobe bright and early tomorrow morning and here I am making horrible noise in my pajamas because inspiration strikes at the most inconvenient times.

Handmade cassette tape loops and repeat/looper/pitch control function abuse of a Sony TCM-900 tape recorder, cut up and multitracked in Audacity. Initially I was thinking of “broken music” in terms of sampling the little click/fissure on a tape loop, but then ended up multi-tracking a bunch of short one-minute sessions, cut them into sections and put them together into a short little ditty. Enjoy!
